For a senior high school student, the most struggling question can not be found in their final examinations, nor in discussions whenever your teacher asks you during recitations. It is not what your guidance counsellor asked you once, when you were in a big trouble. For a fourth year high school student, deciding what course they should take up the time they enter college was the biggest turning point in their life for this is where their future lies into. It is like the biggest decision you have to do in your life because it is not just some silly question you have to answer by yes or no. It is not the type of question that you can answer in just a snap of a finger. It would take up a lot of time since there are things you still have to consider before making a decision, considering your interest. It is the most important thing you have to consider because once you have decided what course to take up and it is not what you were even interested into, there is a chance that it might affect you and your performance in school. You also have to consider your family’s opinion too, even what kind of career it will provide you once you graduated in college. Things like that can easily affect your decision making. That is why it was never easy to respond to the question “what course are you taking up in college?” Choosing the right course is like finding for your other half, because the career you have chosen will be bind to you for a lifetime. It is like there was a contract between the two of you that once broken, you will end up building another one again. Once you feel like it was not the right career for you, you have to start from scratch again and it would take a lot of time. That is why it is very bold for all the women who picke...

Imagine living in a time when your only role is to get married, bear children, and take care of your house and husband. Adrienne Rich proposes an ulterior idea in her essay “Taking Women Students Seriously” Women should not only question the gender standards but discuss the gender norms that society has created; by discussion and attention to the matter we can eliminate it all together. Women are not represented in school curriculums enough and have a large misrepresentation in society. Rich draws attention to: What women have working against them in education, how women are perceived in the world by the media and advertising, and the gender roles that society pressures young children to contort to. By striking up a discussion
You go three years of high school preparing for college and at the same time having fun. Until you are in your senior year of high school that’s when you realize and start asking your self what college do I want to go to? Or what college career I want to pursue? That’s when you notice you have but so little time to answer these questions. Me I’m in my last year of high school and I though I already knew what career I wanted to pursue, but its now that I notice that not even I know what I’m going to do with my life? All I’m sure of its that I’m going to graduate out of high school with a diploma and that I’m going to college. But what happens after that? What major did I study? Or where did I go to accomplish my goal?
Pressure is another difficulty faced by the students. Most of the parents offer clear advice to their wards regarding what should be their major at the University (Bartley &Robitschek, 2000). The advice tendered by the parents is basically based on the prospect of earning a living post college education. It has been seen that majority of these advices turn out to be wrong.
Some people already know by the age of seven that they want to become a pilot or nurse; others, however, have more difficulties deciding what to do with their future. People who decided to go to a university or college have to make an important choice: what major are they going into? For many people this is a very difficult question. As the statistics show, one out of five students change their major between admission and the first day of classes. Nearly three out of four students change majors at least twice before they graduate. And three out of four college students express uncertainly about their major. These striking results raised some questions for me. Is it really necessary to choose a major? What influence has the choice of a specific major on the student and his or her education? What are the opportunities for the future? And how can these students be helped? Since I am still having trouble choosing a major myself, I decided to do some research on this topic and I hope it will help you a little bit to make the right choice.
Nowadays when you ask someone their plans after high school, they say college. And when you ask them what they’ll be majoring in they’ll usually say business, biology, computer science or psychology. What they don’t
I’ve just entered my senior year of high school. I know that this is a very important year. I have a lot of decisions to make and not much time to make them. These decisions will either make or break my life, and I want to make sure that I make them to the best of my ability because there is no turning back. I need to make sure I definitely want to attend college. The decision is totally up to me. There are many positives and negatives of attending college. Go over them, and then decide. I know myself better then anyone else, and I won’t let anyone else tell me what to do. I will make sure if I am going to attend college that I have something in mind that I will want to do, to succeed in. Choosing a major can be a very stressful situation so why not sit down and take some time to do it? Be creative, don’t rush, give yourself plenty of time and really think about what interests you in life. My major is something that I will want to enjoy, something that I will be doing for the rest of my life. Why would I want to be miserable at something I do in life? In two short essays: “College? What’s in It for me?” by Steven M. Richardson, and “What It Means to Be Creative”, by S.I. Hayakawa, I can relate to my major very well. Athletic Training is something that takes skill, as well as being creative in your own way. No two Athletic Trainers are the same. The more creative I am at whatever I do, the better off I will be. I hold the keys to all the doors that can ...
Within living memory, young women who have wanted to study engineering faced such dissent that in 1955, Penn State’s dean of engineering declared, “Women are NOT for engineering,” asserting that all but a few “unusual women” lacked the “basic capabilities” necessary to succeed in this profession (Bix par. 2). Although the number of women in social sciences and humanities has grown steadily, women remain underrepresented in science and engineering. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that “women remain underrepresented in engineering constituting only 10 percent of full-time employed engineers and 7.7 percent of engineering managers...” Although this is the case, social norms, culture and attitudes play a significant role in undermining the role of women in the aforementioned fields in addition to the gendered persistence and their individual confidence in their ability to fulfill engineering roles.
They should go with the flow and stop resisting. Emerson states “If you would not be known to do anything, never do it ”(pg. 55). It shows that people should not try to be someone you are not. If people go in another direction, they will experience resistance which will be hard for them to gain the success they wanted, but when they went in the right direction which there is no resistance, it will be easier for them to fulfill their mission. It is better if you do not choose and just go with the flow. People are free to be what they want to be. Some college students are undecided on what major they wanted to take. There are also some students who had already decided what their course is but at the end, they change their mind and chose a different course. Some students take course take courses that they think will make them successful even though they have a talent for something else. This students will only make it harder for them to be successful. For example, a student has a talent to draw and paint but he / she thinks that it will not make much money for his/her future so the student decided to take a different major that will surely make more money. This student will only have difficulties on taking that course but if the student changes it to the major he/she really wanted to take then it will be easier for him to finish that
Women majoring in engineering are labeled by society this is where stereotypes and misconceptions come in place, the truth about women are not understood by others. Stereotypes and misconceptions played a huge role in society because humans view groups in a different perspective than who people actually are. Stereotypes are based on truth but, with an exaggeration when describing a group of people, cognitions and or believes. On the other hand, misconception is different from stereotypes because misconception is a view based on untruth descriptions about that group or even an assumption just because human are a part of a certain group. Having stereotypes and misconceptions in society can affect various groups because some of the groups can take it as something offensive. The fact is that groups of people are labels that way because of how people act or dress is different from other people, this follows by commercials and even social media that are impacting the way society see people. Society acts a certain way because people feel comfortable to represent them self that way. As part of society women impact society the same as men do because both are humans.
areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics employers are not getting enough women (Pozniak). High school girls only represent 17 percent of computer science Advance Placement (AP) test takers (O'Shea). The most significant group of minorities who are behind in earning computer technology degrees and working in science and mathematical professions are women. “Historically, women’s low representation in science and engineering was said to be due in large part of their lack of ability, interest, or both” (Horning 30). However, this is no longer a true fact according to Ward. Some suggestions to increasing the amount of women in sciences include introducing already present women faculty as mentors. Over the last three decades, women have become interested in almost every industry and occupation, but are not succeeding in receiving a degree in their new field of interest. Women earn about twenty-seven percent of mathematics and science degrees (AAUW). The need for faculty members in mathematics and science is greatest for women. It is proven that women and minorities who earn these degrees are paid less and advance more slowly than men.
There has been a number of debates as to whether college students should be given the opportunity to choose their courses. Like any contentious subject, while others are of the opinion that, courses should be chosen for college students, others believe that, students should be given complete freedom to choose the courses they would love to study. When students join college, they are forced to study for subjects they do not want to. Many students complain that they are not allowed to choose subjects they are interested in; rather, they are forced to take compulsory subjects. In addition, students complain that, they are forced to spend their entire years in college doing things they really do not need. This is very wrong because, college students should have more freedom to choose their own courses for several reasons. To start with, students are always interested in studying different subjects, and they love courses they choose to study. Moreover, if students are allowed to study the courses they choose, it will be easy for them to concentrate and work hard so as to excel in this subjects.
Throughout my first years in two different high schools, I had difficulties discovering what classes were going to benefit me for my future and which ones I was truly dedicated to for finding interest in them. At first I did not have a “favorite subject” or a preferred class, it was attending all my classes that I needed to and get the work done for grade. When I moved schools, I got into Biology Advanced Anatomy Honors my junior year. Assuedly I had a class to look forward to when going to a new school. This was not because I had friends in that class or that the teacher was lenient but because what was being taught actually caught my eye and I found curiosity in it. If I did not get myself into this class I would have been still looking
Picking a college major is probably the hardest aspect of college. It can be stressful trying to narrow down a list of over 200 majors to just a handful. Choosing a major will not only affect the rest of your college years, but your future career choice. You have to sit and decided for yourself, without the influence of others, what your interest are, what you're passionate about, and what you think your purpose in life is. The best question to ask yourself in this type of situation is, "where do I see myself in the next 10 years?" It may seem like the hardest decision you'll ever have to make, but not everyone declares a major in their first year of college. According to a study done by The University of La Verne, "roughly half of all college
The first reason is that it is the best way to figure out what they prefer to study. They do not need to worry even if they do not know what they want to pursue. There is a major called liberal arts which is a broad subject, allowing students to explore general education before they decide their particular majors. As for me, I was so indecisive with what I want to major in. I asked lots of people for their ideas, but no one could give me clear
It was difficult to accept that I was going into college undeclared. It seemed as if everyone else in my grade already knew their true calling in life; several of my classmates were planning to major in psychology, another in business, and even one friend going into a specialized art therapy program. Being an immigrant and a soon-to-be first-generation college student, I felt the pressure to choose something, anything, just to prove that I had at least stepped foot onto the path of success.
