Facebook Breach
Facebook announced that they allowed third- party apps like Cambridge Analytica to receive personal data from many of their customers. This started a scandal that extremely hurt their business. This breach is a business issue because on a business standpoint, this can lead to a loss of customers. This is because customers are going to be afraid of their data getting stolen without their consent. In addition, people do not like to be with companies that do not have their best interest in mind. This also can cause Facebook to lose money. Their customers can decide to deactivate their accounts and every account related to Facebook such as the popular application, Instagram. Also, stockholders may not have appreciated the bad publicity,

so they chose to sell their stock, so they will not lose their money. The issue of ethics is a big part in this case. Although what Facebook did was not entirely illegal, it did raise questions on whether he should be charged for it. Since Facebook took information that was perceived to be private, this creates an issue to the customers because they trusted Facebook to keep their information within the company.
This is another issue because the customers did not know what companies have their information and who they are selling it to. Furthermore, Facebook was able to access personal information such as locations and phone numbers of family members and even their doctors. On the Facebook brand it will have an impact because it would cause people to deactivate their account as well as leave negative reviews because of what they did. In addition, it will cause people to no longer trust Facebook or given them their personal information. This situation would not cause me to delete my Facebook account. This is because Facebook is not the only application doing this. Twitter as well as Google are doing similar things in terms of tracking location and keep track of your history and private information. If I were to delete Facebook for the privacy issues, I would have to do the same for my many other accounts and in this present time that it simply impossible when you want to keep up with current events. In addition, when we signed the terms and conditions we sign away our rights to privacy. In this current time, no one has a right to privacy anymore, therefore the deactivation of my Facebook account will not make a difference to all the other information that is already
stored about me. In conclusion, Facebook should have thought ethically about this situation and how their customers would respond if they found out. Also, people need to realize that the concept of privacy is no longer prevalent in our society.
Personal privacy is a very serious case. Your personal items should stay personal to avoid the risk of someone stealing your information. Three key ideas that can help keep your information safe are less information giving, reading guidelines before agreeing to it, and downloading less risky apps that can potential give out any information.
Steve Lohr, the author of How Privacy Vanishes online explains how people give out much of their personal information online, allowing the information to be used by anyone. The information, birthdays, family photos, personal gossip, and movie or book preferences, are able to be used for a recreation of a person's identification. Lohr, brings out examples of how this can and has happened by explaining the study done by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "Carter Jernigan and Behram Mistree analyzed more than 4,000 Facebook Profiles of students who said they were gay and were able to predict with a 78% accuracy on whether a profile belonged to a gay male."
With social media websites being the main hub of personal information, advertisers are consistently monitoring our social media activity, having the ability to look into our personal information. In the article "Advertising and Consumer Privacy: Old Practices and New Challenges." by Justine Rapp states, “Fueled by advances in capabilities and interconnectedness of computer based technology, advertisers are able to collect and assimilate information on consumers like no other time history” (51). Facebook has become the number one, social media website around the globe. It is the most popular website used by personal and business users in today’s society. In the article “Using Social Media to Reach Consumers: A Content Analysis of Official Facebook Pages” by Amy Parsons states, “As of July 2011, the social network site Facebook claims to have over 750 million members and in the terms of activity.” (27), making it easy to meet and connect with others. Facebook is considered the “hot spot” for online social activity, however, it exposes personal information about its consumers to
According to socialfish.org, the Facebook Privacy Policy is wanting users to automatically public display personal information such as user’s names, location, gender, and photographs, as well as social media activity such as “liked” pages and friends lists. Also, on Facebook when you message people on their messaging application people are allowed to see your location just by the click of the message that was sent. Even if you turn off the location setting on Facebook, the application still allows you to see it so you have to turn off the location button every time you send a message to someone if you do not want them to see your location is one example of our privacy being invaded. According to USA Today, research behavioral scientists shows that Facebook is a big issue with privacy and our every move is being watched from how parents interact with their kids to what we post or share. “Indeed, a University of Vienna study published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, found almost half of Facebook users who left the site said it was over privacy concerns”. Popular social media that we use daily such as Facebook, Google+, Wikipedia, and Yahoo have all changed their privacy policies recently. According to Forbes, “Facebook recently announced changes to its default privacy settings on sharing with friends, it was revealed also that it could access smartphone mics to capture and analyze the songs, TV shows and other things users
An information security breach that compromises data can expose a non-profit to litigation from donors, employees, vendors, and suppliers. Just like any other organization, records stored by a non-profit organization may contain confidential donor data, medical information, organizational data, and credit card information (Hrywna, 2007; Donohue, 2008). As a result of a data breach, donors of a non-profit may file a lawsuit to recover damages from exposure of their sensitive data (Brenner, 2007; Parry, 2005). Non-profit organizations do not comprehend the risk of losses due to an information security failure until they face a lawsuit (Nobles, 2008).
Problem Statement: In this white paper we will address how privacy and security can be improved on Facebook.
I agree with McChesney on this because, the way our economy works has allowed few large Corporations to have full control over the Internet while earning huge profits. In return they provide their consumers with less service and less information that should be essential in a democratic society. McChesney explains how the internet went from being non-commercial to its current commercially profitable source for few major companies. I have always had the conception that Facebook’s main goal is to “connect the world” via its large social media reach, but I did not really think of why Facebook is the number one social media website or why it is able to be that powerful. It is because Facebook and other large companies like Google use sophisticated methods to collect personal data from every search or like or comment and then sell it to advertisers resulting in enormous profits. This raises the issue of privacy in the digital
... led to a diversification of the people who create and maintain them. This can be anyone. Putting personal information into the hands of a stranger is risky outside of the Internet, but even more so online. The ease and speed of the mobility of information means no information is safe on Facebook. Anyone who can see it can copy, save, or redistribute the information at will. A broad and deep aggregate source of information makes search and retrieval of anything posted on Facebook quick and easy. If somebody wants information about you they know how and where to look. Finally, this information can be passed along and analyzed in order to draw conclusions about you and your lifestyle. These can be stereotypical and false. Facebook and other social media sites, and more broadly information technology in general has greatly impacted our lives and our right to privacy.
The 21st century has brought a lot of modern ideas, innovations, and technology. One of these is social media. The invention of Facebook has completely changed the way we communicate with one another. Instant messaging, photo sharing, and joining online groups have created a way for families and friends to connect. Some argue that Facebook is the greatest invention however, while it is seemingly harmless, Facebook has created an invasion of privacy. The accessibility of Facebook and its widespread use has created privacy problems for users, teens, and interviewees by allowing easy control to viewers.
Facebook is traditionally seen as a website which allows for users to upload their own content. Likewise, although it provides space for advertisers, they are responsible for their own content as well. The problem arises that if Facebook allows certain types of content, it is facilitating certain reactions. This is something that Facebook and other websites must consider as they post adverts. Although Facebook is just a portal through which people can post different content, there has to be some accountability with respect to the fact that they are hosting the content on their servers and making it accessible to

Cybercrime and social media are two major global problems that impact society. Today, are more accessible to computers and the Internet than in years prior. Nonetheless, perpetrators attack social media with illegal activity to facilitate their crime. There are different strategies or practices by various countries to combat cybercrime. However, identity theft, cyberbullying and phishing are three major type of cybercrimes which are impacting social networking websites.
Keeping your privacy is getting harder and harder to do, but even though the privacy setting can help to an extent, they don’t always work the way they should. Putting information out for the public eye to see can be a risk but could also be used to the Facebook users advantage. With this comes a loss of privacy that the user has to deal with. No matter how many privacy settings are used or are changed they never a guaranty of full privacy. The only real way to guaranty this is to stay away from social media completely. With that we would lose the connected world we have today.
On social media, each individual has the power to be influential and important. There is a freedom of expression on social media that we are allowed to express. A user on Facebook can post anything they want or anything they want for free.... ... middle of paper ... ...
...people for future business opportunities. A person may apply for a job, but when that company reviews the applicant’s Facebook page, they may find that that particular person likes to party every night and fight with people online. This may cause the employer to loose interest in the applicant and possibly choose another person for the position. With social networking site readily accessible by anyone online, the wrong information may get out and it may impact a person’s life in a way they never expected.
