Technology has changed the way our society communicates, socializes, and interacts with each other forever. Some are of the belief that there is nothing better on earth then when the newest technology comes to the shelfs.Whether it is the new Ipad, Iphone, or big flat screen T.V. there always seemed to be a line out the front door. Unfortunately there is a underbelly a very evil and dark side that is finally getting the attention it deserves. One of the biggest contributors to the new social media push is Facebook. This particular application has been used for gross electronic aggression and has become the gateway for the arsenal of schoolyard bullies. In 2008 I watched as my neighbors 14 year old daughter go from being a sweet straight A student, to being a EMU, sexually promiscuous, and participating in drug activity. This occurred in a 9-12 month period after receiving her Facebook account. Ironically in 2008–2009 the School Crime Supplement (National Center for Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice Statistics) indicates that 6% of students in grades 6–12 experienced cyberbullying. Because of Facebook our country has seen are teens start to measure their worth, appearance, and feelings of low self-esteem leading to the tragic suicides in the media.
The media in our country has always been a huge driving force behind many of society's belief systems and social economic status. The CDC, and the Department of Health and Human services state at this time to help with the prevention of all of these complex issues, is to increasing connectedness among youth and parents, other adults, and teachers. They also suggest not to let your teen or child use such applications with out supervison and educate them in regards to the seriousness of all the issues surrounding the World Wide Web. The increase in media becoming a babysitter is a major contributor to this devastating situation. I know many children under 13 who have more than one Facebook. The question that arises in many minds is if Facebook networking is really a necessity. My suggestion, if your the parent, the decision needs to be made if and when Facebook becomes more of a necceassry evil for you.
Teens use technological devices as weapons through the use of social networking websites, text messaging and other ways. Teenager use these social networking websites and text messaging to make fun of one another, call each other names and threaten one another all to the point where the victim feels worthless and ends up with psychological problems or in the worst scenario, committing suicide. The most famous website that teenagers use these days for cyberbullying is Facebook; they login to their account and write a status about their victim and tag their victim on the status or ask a friend who has the victim as a friend to tag him or her in a comment below the status. They aren't going to set up their own playdates, and they shouldn't be checking an Instagram or Twitter account. Continuing to the subject of social media, according to a 2011 study headed by Danah Boyd, a senior researcher at Microsoft Research, 55 percent of parents of 12-year-olds said that their child was on Facebook and that 76 percent of those had helped the child gain access. In 2003, Zuckerberg created an Am I Hot or Not? application on his facemash.com site and was accused of “breaching security, violating copyrights and violating individual privacy” (Kaplan, 2003). So it isn’t surprising that Mitrano, the Director of IT Policy and Computer Policy & Law at Cornell seeks to warn the Cornell student body of possible consequences of irresponsible use of Facebook in the article Thoughts on Facebook. What is surprising is that IT policy guidance is typically found in an actual policy document, rather than an essay or article. Mitrano sought to provide Cornell IT policy guidance on the ramifications of Facebook via friendly Facebook advice from a credible source. Because of missed opportunities to inform, overriding concerns over policy, and lack of knowledge regarding the controls within the Facebook application, Mitrano’s article was not as persuasive as it should have been.

In today’s society the youth of the world are almost fully dependent on technology and social media. They are participants of these websites without thinking about or being aware of the consequences of their constant abuse. These social sites are made to keep everyone in the world connected with each other. They were made to make news and the information of today accessible and relative to everyone. These good and honest intentions have been transformed into so much more. These websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the infamous Youtube are now used as a way to avoid or emphasize the troubles and problems of people’s everyday lives. With all the new networking site it makes it easier for bullies to target their victims. Kids don’t understand when they reach a certain limit it can trigger the young kids mind to commit suicide. Bullying and suicide have a huge connection between the two. Getting bullied at school is one thing getting bullied on social media is another, there are more people that can see if they post public. Getting made fun of on social media can make the other kid sensitive and can get to them to the point where they cannot take it anymore. If kids have easy access to get online it is easy for them to find their victim, now a day kids know how to work the new websites. The popular site, Facebook.com, has amassed more than one billion registrants since it started in February 2004. It is another social networking site, just like MySpace.com and Xanga.com, which is common to High School and College students. But this is no ordinary site; people’s lives literally revolve around Facebook. I have a Facebook account and log in at least once a day. I personally believe that Facebook is a fun and interactive site. However, some students may not feel that same way because they have encountered some negative aspects, aside from Facebook’s legal problems.
