Exploring Cultural Competence
Cultural Competence refers to the ability to recognize cultural
differences accurately and to leverage or transcend them in order to
achieve desired performance results. It applies to various levels of
culture including national/societal, ethnic, organizational,
functional and interpersonal.
This ability describes a specific mind- and skill-set that is
increasingly required of successful employees, managers, leaders and
organizations. Whether in face-to-face interactions, direct or
indirect reporting relations, customer contact or geographically
dispersed teams, cultural differences affect the way we manage, make
decisions, solve problems, communicate and collaborate.
I have been brought up in a way to respect everyone regarding their
culture, race, sex, age, and gender. I treat all people equally with
respect even though they are all different and come from different
backgrounds and upbringings. I have never imposed my beliefs and
values on anyone because I feel that everyone should be allowed to
have their own choices on what they believe and their values and I in
reality I respect them. This why I believe that it is acceptable to
speak a language other than English, I feel that a great benefit for
me because I am multilingual.
I feel that I am a very open minded person and also non-biased and
when I become a social worker I feel that I will be able to accept my
clients decisions as to a degree to which they choose to acculturate
into the dominant culture.
For my placement I know that I will be introduced to people from all
different walks of life, I also know that I will be introduced to
people who choose different lifestyles such as their sexuality. I have
no problem at all accepting and providing services to clients who are
gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered or any other. I feel that I have
no right to discriminate anyone because they should be able to empower
themselves and be able to make the right choices for themselves with
support from everyone.

Cultural competence has to do with one’s culture. Culture affects among other factors, how children are raised, how families communicate, what is considered normal or abnormal, ways of coping with issues, the way we dress, when and where we seek medical treatment, and so forth. I should know because I come from a very cultural home where it is considered bad to talk to a male doctor about anything gynecological.
When thinking about cultural competence, it is hard to really understand without knowing what it actually means. According to Sue & Sue “Cultural competence is an active, developmental, and ongoing process, that is something people achieve through ambition rather than it just being achieved” (2003). What kind of competencies it takes to be successful working in a culturally diverse workplace, and how to develop these competencies are two things this paper will discuss. Also, a personal view-point from the author on; what kinds of strengths she has and what areas she needs improvement in regards to cultural competence, and a few ways she feels she could improve those areas in which she needs improvement.
Culturally competent care is care that respects diversity in the patient population, and cultural factors that affect health and health care, such as language, communication styles, attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs. The national CLAS Standards provide the blueprint to implement such appropriate services to improve health care in the United States. The standards cover many areas, such as leadership, workforce, governance; communication and language assistance; organizational engagement, continuous improvement, and accountability. Culture can be referred to as having values, beliefs, and behaviors shared by a group of people. It can also be referred to by different variables such as age, gender, socioeconomic status. There are many facets to culture that one may not realize. People’s cultural backgrounds impact how they think, feel, and behave. Understanding these factors can help modify the needs of members in a group setting. As an aspiring counselor, it is important for me to understand how my cultural background not only impacts my ability in working with a diverse range of people, but specific attitudes and beliefs can also enhance or interfere my ability to work within a group dynamic.
I want to become a social worker to help connect people to available resources when they may be in a place of injustice or despair and offer them the guidance they may need to make important decisions that can be life changing. Also, I am interested in being a social worker because the work can be extremely rewarding. I do understand, some days will be extremely difficult, but I also understand that when you can go home at the end of the day, knowing you’ve done your best to help someone, that is a rewarding feeling and I will know that I chosen the right career path. When individuals or groups from different cultures communicate, this process is called intercultural communication. The transaction process of listening and responding to people from different cultural backgrounds can be challenging. The greater the difference in culture between two people, the greater the potential of misunderstanding and mistrust.
