Many people debate over if the south really seceded from the United States strictly because they want to keep slavery. Many people claim that the issues that caused the confederacy to leave were things like States rights, sectionalism, and Lincoln being elected. These things are what people claim to be the source of the south succeeding the union. One of the reasons the south claimed to leave the union was because of sectionalism. Southerners believed that the North's views on the economy, political values and structure was too different for things to work smoothly. The North was still agricultural; however, they were investing their time on building and making factories to produce products faster. While doing this they paid all of their workers including the immigrant workers. In the South they built their economy strictly on harvesting indigo, rice, cotton and etc. With these crops, it took a lot of work to harvest. However, they didn’t lose any money in the process of the long, hard hours it took to harvest these crops, because the people who were working were slaves.slavery is what made the south successful for around 200 years. They wanted to have the right to govern their state and make sure that some of their rights aren’t taken away from them. (meaning slavery).The South believed that the Federal Government was going to take away slavery. They thought that the states should have a right to have slavery. They also believed that the Federal Government was going to favor the north by making a 40% tariff. The South already had 75-80% federal Revenue. The south didn’t want to be taken advantage of with their wealth. The south felt that the Federal Government would never respect their beliefs and wishes.
