If basketball was a religion I would have been a devoted follower. For 6 years of my life I lived, ate, slept basketball year-round. I began as a late bloomer beginning my basketball career in the 7th grade. Growing up in a poverty-stricken environment, to stay out the way of the violence and crime, basketball was the only positive reinforcement. From that point on basketball became a safe-haven from the difficulties of my community. I would find myself every day after school at the local gym practicing my jump shot mimicking Kobe Bryant’s shooting form and practice to dribble like Steve Nash.
I dedicated my life to a game that help mold me into the man I am today. From the hard practices, that taught me to be relentless, fearless and strong
It runs through my veins and I cannot live without it. For a long time I did not know who I was but one day, through a basketball camp, a coach helped me realize what my identity was. He helped me figure out that i am a child of God. All my uncles played basketball along with both of my Grandfathers. For a long time I thought that basketball had to be the only thing to define me but, it does not.
The game of basketball along with football and soccer is one of the most prominent sports in the United States and the World. It’s played at every level from 5 & under to the professional athletes in the NBA and overseas. Every team is made up of virtually the same elements; the guards, big men and coaches. Basketball is not a sport where you can focus solely on yourself, but the focus should be on the team. The sport is very public and easy to see, however there are many things that occur behind closed doors when no one is looking.
My dad would always tell me it’s not good to play video games, because they cannot help you, but baseball can help you succeed in life. This really changed my view on what baseball potentially has. I became more dedicated and committed to the sport, Baseball. I never played any other sport, and I started progressively doing more baseball each year. I have tried extremely hard to keep playing baseball, because it will come to an end at some point, but hopefully it will be later in my life instead of sooner.
Starting my freshman year at County High School, I played basketball and loved every minute of it. I wouldn’t be conceited enough to say I was good, but God did bless me with the talent to play. My life revolved around the sport of basketball; some would say I slept, ate, and breathed every part of it. I spent all my time training and practicing to make myself a more dedicated athlete. This dedication not only helped me as a player, but also molded me into the person I am today. It somehow helped to prepare me for what defeat I would face with back surgery in the future.
I have always been involved in sports in some way or another. I was team captain in every sport imaginable in elementary school. Junior high I continued to be involved in sports, but it wasn't until high school started that I really got into it. I played soccer, softball and basketball at Rogers High School. I particularly loved soccer. Just playing it gave me a rush I had never felt before. Also knowing that this sport took a lot of hard work and dedication gave me a sense of satisfaction, because I knew that I put everything I had into it. Putting a lot of dedication and hard work into something may prove to be useful in the future.
Each game, my passion grew. Each team, new memories and lifelong friends were made. Sports sometimes make me feel disappointment and at loss; but it taught me to be resilient to a lot of things, like how to thrive under pressure and come out on top. Being the team captain of my high school’s football and lacrosse team showed me how having a big responsibility to bring a group together to work as one is compared to many situations in life. Currently playing varsity football, varsity lacrosse, and track I take great pride in the activities I do. Staying on top of my academics, being duel enrolled at Indian River State College, working three nights a week, and two different sport practices after school each day shaped my character to having a hard work
I believe the question posed by Prebish asking whether sport is a parallel to religion or identical means that sport is very closely related to the same principles. It is an organized institution dealing with faith, discipline, tradition, rituals, and has devout followers, as does the religious institution. When a sport can bring its followers to an experience of the ultimate plateau of complete focus, oneness, devotion, and the quest for salvation, I believe this is identical to religion.
Basketball is a sport that has changed in various ways since its invention in 1891. It has evolved and expanded across the United States and across the world. Although it has had its ups and downs basketball is still a sport that is enjoyed by over 250 million people in this world. Today it is one of the biggest sports known and it continues to grow every year with new players bringing new styles and competition. The changes throughout the history of basketball can be shown through its origin, how it developed into a competitive sport, and its evolution into present day leagues.
A hobby I've held onto and cherished for a very long time was playing baseball. The sport was introduced to me by my father through the movie The Sandlot. The sport ended up holding a more significant meaning to me after I learned that both my Father and Grandfather played in their high school years. For me, Baseball laid down the foundation for my future and has been a positive force in my development since I was young.

It’s more important that I teach about God than basketball. Basketball doesn’t make you who you are, but a life with Christ does.
When I was younger my dad sat me in front of a T.V and put a Xbox controller in my hand he then told me to go against him in Halo. And in my mind, I want to beat my dad to a bloody mess, but that's not how things went. I lost my dad but I gain the greatest experience in my life. Just by playing a simple game I was hooked on doing more.

Involvement in sports has also meant that competitiveness and team-skills have become a part of my lifestyle, but I simply believe that I have a lot of patience and the willingness to learn and accept every challenge that comes my way.
Being part of the basketball clique in high school helped me learn the intrapersonal and social communication skills I use today. As a child playing basketball was my favorite activity or hobby. It's also the way I met a lot of my good friends that I have now. All my close friends I have met. I have met them through playing basketball.. Whether they were on my team, the opposing team or just fans in the crowd who admired my play. Not only has basketball helped me gain friends, but basketball also taught me a lot about life. There are many aspects of life that coincide with basketball. For instance basketball is a team game and an individual game. Like in life you have to work together with other people. The communication skills I learned from basketball helped me communicate with friends, girlfriends, parents and bosses at work.
When you look at a basketball what do you see? Most would see an orange, sphere, shaped rubber ball. There are black lines and real leather. If you look closer, you would even see the size of the ball in which you are playing with. A basketball could be just a toy for many, or even represent a release for others, but for me, it means a lot more. A basketball represents my blood, sweat, tears, passion, sacrifice, and most of all, a sense of belonging, like a family. At this moment in my life, there are only three things I devote my life to- family, friends, and basketball. Basketball has shaped my life probably more than anything else. Basketball has instilled in me a vicious will to achieve and embrace my ambitions instead of fearing them. Basketball gave me an open opportunity to try something new. New opportunities and experiences are not such a big deal anymore. From academics to personal matters, the lessons that I have learned from basketball has impacted my life.
I adore basketball. That also reminds me of this quote: “Athletes are driven by commitment. To their sport. To themselves. To excellence itself. Commitment fuels the extra mile. The final set. The last quarter. Going on when the body begs to stop. A winner makes commitments. A loser makes promises. Even when you’ve played the game of your life. It’s the feeling of teamwork that you’ll remember. You’ll forget the plays. The shots. And the scores. But you’ll never forget your teammates. BASKETBALL. My anti-Drug.” I like that quote, but I cannot say I fully agree with it. Anyways, I can think of many basketball lovers, but ones that truly are, will not give up on themselves. They will have the patience and the mind to dribble the ball steadily, reach for success, but capture their dreams. Life is a basketball court.
