In order to support good mental health and wellbeing, there are common principles used by social care workers in the area of mental health. The social care workers must carry out and stick to these principles in order to correctly carry out their role in this area. 1) You must be able to recognise the signs of mental health problems and distress and how to react in the appropriate manor. The individuals who use social care services can endure long times of distress as a result of suffering from a mental illness or mental health issues. It is important the social care worker is able to identify if individuals require changes to the care and support they get from the service. It is also now that good communication between social care worker and service user is essential to help understand how someone is feeling. 2) You must encourage dignity and respect by maintaining confidentiality and appreciating the service user’s experiences and knowledge. When dignity and respect is maintained it has a positive effect on the service user’s self-esteem, feelings of self-gratification and over all bring about a more positive mental health.
