In the 1900’s many people lived by their laws and did not care about others. Most people carried around guns there was not a strict legal system like there is today. If someone robbed you or scammed you, you could get revenge your own way. Many people were murdered for revenge. There was also a lot of cheating and scheming. People could not be trusted in the American Old West. In the movie Maverick, Mrs. Bransford’s scheme was to pretend to be married to make it easier to get way after she pickpocketed a man while kissing him. She tried her scheme on Bret Maverick but was not smooth enough to get away with it. Bret Maverick joined a poker game while the was staying in Crystal River. He promised to loose for the first hour. During that hour
he watched the other players and learned their tells. He also teamed up with his friend Joseph to scam the Russian Grand Duke out of $2,000. Cooper had several schemes throughout the movie first he teamed up with the commodore to steal the grand prize of the tournament. Then you find out that Angel, a poker player from Crystal River, was in on it to. He also had a scheme going with Maverick that played out through the whole movie. The Commodore had a scheme with Cooper and Angel and tried to betray them both. There were several times throughout the movie that people were caught or accused of cheating. In Crystal River Maverick was accused of cheating and got into a fight. During the tournament several people were thrown off the boat because they were caught cheating. There was one instance where a young man was discovered to have cards up his sleeve. Another time a man had cards on the inside of his jacket. The final time we see cheating in the movie is during the final game, there is a fixed hand so that the Commodore will win. There is also several times in the movie where someone steals from another person. In Crystal River the bank is robbed and so is maverick. There is also the time when Mrs. Bransford stole Maverick’s wallet. There is also the time that Joseph stole Mavericks money to play a trick on him but then gave it back. Then there is the time where Cooper stole the money from Maverick at the poker tournament. Next Maverick stole the money back from Cooper. Finally the last instance of stealing in the movie is when Mrs. Bransford steals the money from Maverick, but only gets half because he hide the other half in his boot. People in the American Old West could not be trusted. They stole, cheated, and lied. They also took the law into their own hands and killed people at will. No one followed the rules at the poker tournament. There was also robberies happening all the time along with the schemes others ran. The 1900’s were a dangerous and untrustworthy time to be alive.
During the early 1920s the Great Depression took place. The Great Depression affected many people's lives. The immigrants caught the worst of it. They had just come from another country and were trying to start their new lives when the depression hit. They had to struggle once more with poverty and desperation in taking care of their families, the main reason they had left their old countries was to escape the same epidemic that was now overtaking ?the land of the free?. Immigrants, such as the Jewish immigrants, had to live in poverty-stricken ghettos without the necessities they needed to live healthy lives. The 1920s was the time of rapid change, it was the time of risque fashion, it was the time of which that if you were rich and had all the latest fashions then you were ?in? but if you did not then you were an outcast.
The 1920s or the roaring twenties was post World War I and before the Great Depression. Unfortunately, not everything was pleasing for the 1920s, as this time period experienced social, economic, and cultural alterations that affected the lives of Americans. One reason I would not enjoy living in the 1920s was because during this time a law prohibition was passed abolishing the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol and liquors which led to bootlegging and high crime. The 20’s were a very time changing era. Personally, I think things were to uncontrolled and especially for young women living the cities of America. They could now
We have better phones to communicate better, we have better access to internet and they didn't have internet back then. There are more stricter laws to protect. Some of those laws are for driving, for example to wear seat belts, a certain speed limits, and age limit to drive. Some more differences consist of transportation, what people wear, and the way we speak. Back then transportation was really slow because people traveled by carriages there were also trains, but now we have better transportations to get to places faster. What we wear is way different than what people wore back then. During the nineteenth century people wore dresses and suits and there weren't many people that wore just pants and t-shirts. But now people wear pants and t-shirts all the time, they also wear dresses but they are different then the dresses back then. The way we speak is different than how people spoke back then. We have different slang words and we word are sentences different now. These are just few of the differences.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in the early 1900s? The turn of the century left Americans feeling more optimistic about life (Woog 4). People were honest and kind (Woog 5). The 1900s can be remembered as a happy time, but also a time of hardship for some Americans (Woog 5). Theodore Roosevelt, President 1901-1910, guided America in a way in which he created laws to help the social and economic problems of the time as well as improving politics by being a strong leader and recognizing the true needs of the country.
The period from 1877 to 1901 in American history was known as the Gilded Age, it was titled so because during this time things on the surface seemed peaceful and good but underneath lay corruption in the society. This era was marked by the end of Reconstruction of the South, as well as the presidencies of Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Cleveland, Harrison, and McKinley. Significant events of this time were the 1878 Bland Allison Act in which the federal government bought silver and turned it into cheap money. The 1881 Chinese Exclusion Act which banned all Chinese immigrants coming into America because they were hurting employment opportunities for American laborers. The 1883 Pendleton Act that ended Jackson’s spoils system in the government and made the Merit System based on intelligence and ability. The 1887 Interstate Commerce Act which regulated the railroads. The Sherman Antitrust Act which outlawed any combination in restraint of trade. And last, the Gold Standard Act of 1900 that made the American monetary unit based on gold.
After the war, the American people made the change from "old" ways to "new" ways. Many factors, such as new technology, fundamentalism, new looks and church led to tension between the old and the new. The 1920s were a time of conflicting viewpoints between traditional behaviors and new and changing attitudes.
The 1920's was a time of great social change with new prosperity, new ideas but most importantly a time of heroes. These so called heroes defined the era and were the role models for the people of this time period. They brought on hope and enlightenment after the horrific times that they had gone through with the depression and the war. The role of women changed, sports and entertainment stars were celebrated and modern technology changed America's landscape. The twenties were a time when people laughed more often than cried, partied more often than worked, and dreamed more often than faced reality.
Americans felt a need to rise in social status in the 1920's. Things like art and religion did not even make it in the maybe pile. Money and social acceptance was number one in every household.
The 1920s was a changing time in America. There we so many new concepts brought to the day to day lives of citizens in America and with that said the 1920s were the more important to America. The advancement in transportation technology, credit, and women's freedom gave people the self independence they needed.
The 1920's was a time of change in the United States. “The Roaring Twenties” had an outstanding impact on the economy, social standards and everyday life. It was a time for positive results in the industry of consumer goods and American families, because of higher wages, shorter working hours, and manufacturing was up 60% in consumer goods. But it was also a time of adversity and opposition for others, such as immigrants and farmers. Immigrants had lots of competition when they were looking for work and they weren't treated fairly by Americans, depending on where they came from and what they believed. Farmers were paid very little because the price of food kept going down, they also had the Dust Bowl to worry about. African Americans became further infused with mainstream America during the Harlem Renaissance. They were also able to organize and elect officials who would make life better for them. The Roaring Twenties was a very exciting time to live in and we can all learn what the real world is like, and how we can prepare to be ready for it, today and in the future.
A typical Western would usually be set in the late 19th century in the mid-west of America in a remote town. The town is usually small, lonely and unwelcoming. Typically a western set looks like it is in the middle of a desert with sand, cacti and tumbleweed which gives a desert look, there are usually never any lakes or rivers around these features make the place look really hot and deserted. The buildings are generally timber board houses with swinging doors and outside the buildings are places to keep their horses, there is also always a General Store and a Saloon. Horses and carriages and cattle are used to give a western feel. The cowboys are typically dressed in western style clothing for example they wear simple shirts and jeans they may also wear ponchos, waist coats, hats, boots with spurs, guns and a belt to hold the gun and bullets, Hero's tend to wear lighter clothing and the villain’s tend to wear darker clothing.
The story of the American West is still being told today even though most of historic events of the Wild West happened over more than a century ago. In movies, novels, television, and more ways stories of the old west are still being retold, reenacted, and replayed to relive the events of the once so wild and untamed land of the west that so many now fantasize about. After reading about the old west and watching early westerns it is amazing how much Hollywood still glorifies the history and myth of the old west. It may not be directly obvious to every one, but if you look closely there is always a hint of the Western mentality such as honor, justice, romance, drama, and violence. The most interesting thing about the Old West is the fact that history and myth have a very close relationship together in telling the story of the West.
Prior to the Great Depression the United States was flourishing with technology and consumer spending. The Roaring Twenties brought much cheer and prosperity to the economy. The invention of the automobile, radio and motion picture brought higher wages and more jobs. When families wanted to forget about their troubles for a little while, they would usually go see a movie. Some films were The Wizard of Oz, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Gone with the Wind. Music was also an entertaining way to distract you from everyday life problems. Women were dressing differently and trying to gain a better place for themselves in the work force. Their views and mannerism were also changing.
Major things changed in the 1920s. People were not acting or dressing the same as they had been. It was a time of rebellion in youth. The female youth In particular changed. In the past female had been arrested or disgraced for dressing immodestly or smoking in public. In the 1920s women were shortening their hemlines, drinking and smoking in public, and flaunting it so everyone could see. This was obviously out of frustration and wanting to change how they were being treated. The youth of this time are often referred to as the "Flaming Youth". Not only were the youth acting out though. The whole population in General was on a spending frenzy. Even people who didn't have the money spent wildly. Everyone wanted to live luxuriously, Buying cigarettes, magazines, newspapers, radios, alcohol, and drugs, all to make them "happy". With all this spending, people h...
The 1920s in America was an exciting rise socially and economically. The economic rise of the 1920s was based on selling more and more goods. There was Prohibition and at one point selling alcohol was illegal. Speakeasies and bootleggers had alcohol illegally and flappers (a fashionable young woman intent on enjoying herself and flouting conventional standards of behavior) would drink, go out, and smoke. Also, many people went out to go see movies in theaters. Historians estimated that three quarters of the population saw a movie every week. (Source 1) It became okay for women to do this in society but they were considered rebellious. Frequent new merchandise came out so people kept on buying to excess. People had the money because of the stock they invested in and pay was high. There were more and more new objects, such as the Model T, refrigerator, dishwasher and many others. (Source 1) There was no more room for these objects so they were stored in warehouses. Eventually there was a collapse because there was more...
