I confess, I am guilty. I am guilty of supporting these disgraceful prisons where the ones held captive are, at times, abducted from there homes and forced to entertain us. I did not support them because I wanted to or thought it to be right, but because I was ignorant and did not know the truth. In fact, at one point in our lives we are all guilty of it. Looks can be deceiving. At first glance we would never think these places to be horrible, but in all reality they are. I am talking about zoos, aquariums, marine parks and circuses. All of these places are just another form of prisons. The only difference between this prison and other prisons is that the prisoners did nothing to deserve to be in there, they are all innocent. I have been to a zoo and a circus, making me guilty, therefore it is my responsibility to inform you about what really goes on behind closed doors.
Animals that are brought to the United States and taken to someone’s home are said to have to go through the “exotic pet trade.” These animals are taken from their natural habitat, such as Australia, Brazil, and Africa and are exposed to harsh transport. Some examples of animals that are put in these conditions are parrots. They sometimes have their beaks and legs taped and are stuffed into tubes. Turtles suffer harsh conditions as well. They are trapped with tape inside their shells and shoved into small compartments along with many other turtles. Also, you need a lot of money and space to take care of that exotic animal that you probably don’t have. Animals have been kept in captivity for the entertainment of humans for thousands of years. Although many rules and regulations have been put in place worldwide, many people still feel that it is unfair to keep animals in captivity as they feel it in near impossible to replicate their homes in the wild. I feel that it is unfair to keep animals in captivity as they are unable to roam like they do in the wild.
News reporters are revealing it as being equivalent to living in a bathtub. Keeping animals confined in nothing but water that is only 50 feet deep when they are used to diving 1,000 feet and swimming 100 miles a day is going to construct a multitude of tension. There have been over 100 deaths at SeaWorld and we have only heard of 2. So follow the protests, in this fight against keeping animals in captivity. Animals should not be kept in captivity because they create a dangerous and alarming environment, not only for the employees, but for the animals as well, it dangers the animal’s mental and physical health, and they can’t live a regular life as the animals should.
It is said that in order to protect the wildlife, we need to be educated about the wildlife that inhabits our planet. As humans, and the superior species on Earth, we put exotic animals, aquatic and terrestrial, in zoos or aquariums where people can go to see them to learn more about them in order to protect them. It just so happens that by putting these animals into captivity, we are causing more damage to them, just as damage is occurring in the wild and more species are becoming extinct. Animals should not be held in captivity; it does not save them from going extinct, but helps kill them off.
Envision yourself in an animal cage for the rest of your life. With no escape and no way of seeing your loved ones. There are better methods for education and conservation than keeping animals locked up in zoos away from their natural habitat. Visitors may learn more by watching a documentary or going to museums instead. Plus, if people want to see animals in person, they can travel the world and see the animals in their natural environment instead of going to man-made habitats. This is wrong because most animals are prisoners in their own cages, and they don't get to run free in the wild or eat as they like, therefore their food chain changes. However, animals may experience psychological trauma when they are separated from family members and locked away in isolation. Also, removing animals from the wild puts their entire species at risk for extinction.
Every year, thousands of exotic animals are taken from their environments and thrown into cages and treated as if they’re domestic animals. This is not right, a domestic animal is born into captivity and trained to behave. Majorities of exotic animals are born in the wild and trained to behave and, be associated as a domestic pet. We do not agree with this. Exotic animals should not be kept as pets.
There are billions of animals in captivity around the world. These animals are in zoos, breeding centers, and research laboratories. All those animals lead to out lash because of the stress of being in a small confinement habitat. Is it ethical to keep animals in captivity for research, breeding, or for our enjoyment? Over the years keeping animals in captive has not changed in safety and the well-being of the animal.
