The fear of being sent, either by force or self enforced, into exile was a common fear of the Anglo-Saxon society. This exile could be interpreted both as an exile on Earth and exile from Heaven to Earth. To be exiled means to be utterly alone with only thoughts to accompany a person. The possibility of exile was terrifying to the Anglo-Saxon people because they were so dependant on the village or town they lived in along with the people in it. A warrior would live to serve his lord in battles. Without a lord or community, there was nowhere to go and nothing to do. As the Christian religion crept into Anglo-Saxon culture, religious metaphors also began to show in the ancient text. The exile these people feared could also be interpreted as being banished from heaven to live on earth. This exile was not her choice, similar to the wanderer. The reader should feel sympathy for the wife because she would have not survived on her own if she did not find another man to support her. The poet has deliberately structured the poem in five sections each with a number of stanzas to divide the different stages of the physical voyage. Section one describes the refugees, two briefly deals with their reason for the exodus, three emphasises their former oppression, fourth section is about the healing effect of the voyage and the concluding section deals with the awakening of hope. This restructuring allows the poet to focus on the emotional and physical impact of the journey.

In the poem "A Song of Changgan", It establishes with the speaker not wanting to be with her husband "And I lowered my head toward a dark corner; And would not turn to your thousand calls;" However, as she turns fifteen she considers that she has no other choice and grasps the fact that she loves him. "But at fifteen, I straightened my brows and laughed, Learning that no dust could ever seal our love, That even unto death I would await you by my post; And would never lose heart in the tower of silent watching." When the speaker turns sixteen, her husband sets off on a lengthy journey which made her worried as he hasn't come home for a while. She feels constricted to her husband and feels as if she is restrained by him. She also feels isolated to herself because she feels finally free. She does not want to escape the happiness and freedom that is building up inside of her. In the passage, “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” a mariner, stranded on a boat, has to find hope and redemption through being isolated. After taking the time to dwell on his wrongdoing, the mariner finally understands he must pray to rid of his pride.
Some of the most intriguing stories of today are about people’s adventures at sea and the thrill and treachery of living through its perilous storms and disasters. Two very popular selections about the sea and its terrors are The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger and “The Wreck of the Hesperus” by Henry Longfellow. Comparison between the two works determines that “The Wreck of the Hesperus” tells a more powerful sea-disaster story for several different reasons. The poem is more descriptive and suspenseful than The Perfect Storm, and it also plays on a very powerful tool to captivate the reader’s emotion. These key aspects combine to give the reader something tangible that allows them to relate to the story being told and affects them strongly.
This is added to by the fact that she is isolated from others. She lives in “a lonesome-looking place” with poplar trees around it that were also “lonesome-looking.” She has no visitors and does not visit others. This isolation is because of her husbands wishes. So not only does he not provide her with love or affection, he prevents her from getting companionship elsewhere.

Inevitably, loneliness will overpower any other foul emotion and influence a person to make a change. This is seen in everyday life as people are constantly searching for attention, new comrades or someone to relate with. When analyzing this paragraph I saw it as a perfect foreshadowing of the development that this character will undergo. At this point, her years of solitude have most likely scarred her socially, emotionally and psychologically, but eventually she will find the courage to venture out of her comfort zone. Other notable elements within the excerpt include Morrison’s eloquent and epic writing style equally matched by her ability to connect with the reader emotionally. Many of the sentences within this short paragraph could be extracted as quotes to demonstrate a theme. For example the sentence, “Veiled and protected by the live green walls, she felt ripe and clear, and salvation was as easy as a wish,” allows for the reader to search their memory for their own experience of salvation or serenity. Although the little girl doesn’t listen to the mother the first time she eventually listens in the end. For example, in stanzas 1-4, the little girl asks if she can go to the Freedom March not once, but twice even after her mother had already denied her the first time. These stanzas show how the daughter is a little disobedient at first, but then is able to respect her mother’s wishes. In stanzas 5 and 6, as the little girl is getting ready the mother is happy and smiling because she knows that her little girl is going to be safe, or so she thinks. By these stanzas the reader is able to tell how happy the mother was because she thought her daughter would be safe by listening to her and not going to the March. The last two stanzas, 7 and 8, show that the mother senses something is wrong, she runs to the church to find nothing, but her daughter’s shoe. At this moment she realizes that her baby is gone. These stanzas symbolize that even though her daughter listened to her she still wasn’t safe and is now dead. The Shoe symbolizes the loss the mother is going through and her loss of hope as well. This poem shows how elastic the bond between the daughter and her mother is because the daughter respected her mother’s wish by not going to the March and although the daughter is now dead her mother will always have her in her heart. In the poems “The Wanderer”, “The Wife’s Lament”, and “Cuchilainn's Boyhood Deeds” there are journeys that each of the characters go through in the poems. In The Wanderer and “The Wife's Lament” the characters are dealing with the lose of a what they called life. In “Cuchilainn's Boyhood Deeds” the young man in the poem is seeking glory and honor. The poem dapple in both a physical journey and a mental or emotional dilemma. In “The Wanderer” the warrior is sent off in exile and he dreams of finding a new lord and a new hall to become apart of. In “The Wifes Lament”, the wife is also living in exile because he husband family has separated them; she images a life where she isnt so lonely anymore. “Cuchulainn's Boyhood Deeds” is about a boy who imagines himself doing heroic deed to gain favor, honor, and to become a legend. Each of the characters has a physical journey that are in the mist of, but while in the middle of those trial they are also faced with emotional pain and longing for a better life.
The Odyssey, a poem written by a man named Homer, who is illustrating the approach of Odysseus’ traveling home to grasp back his sovereign power as king in Ithaca, for ten years following the Trojan War. In the poem, Homer maneuvers numerous amounts of diction to add gruesome and agonizing tones to demonstrate the complications Odysseus’ and his crew mates go from the beginning to the end of the journey in southern Greece and cross the Indian Ocean. As a result of diction being applied from start to finish in the story, it establishes an understanding of the poem in an experiential approach for the audience.

Then she gets sidetracked to mention other things she has lost; she then mentions other things she has lost of much more importance such as houses, continents, realms, and cities, but then again mentions it was not so hard to lose those things. But in the end, mention the loss that really matters. She remembers the qualities of the lover she lost.
