Today we close the subject from the “Sermon on the Mount” on Adultery http://andnowyouknowmore.blogspot.com Let us take a look at what did Jesus mean in Matthew 5 verses 27 to 30 when he said, (27) You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY'; (28) but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (29) "If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. (30) If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell. (NASB)
Notice in verse 27, Jesus first quotes the 7th of the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:14 "You shall not commit adultery. As we cover In a previous lesson.
But then Jesus says in verse 28, but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. then Jesus immediately goes into his discourse in verse 29 of how you should pluck out your eye if it causes you to act, and in verse 30 that you should cut off your hand if it causes you to act on

It is not the passing glance, not even the momentary impulse of desire, but the continued gaze by which the impulse is deliberately cherished till it becomes a passion. This noble and beautiful teaching, it has often been remarked, and by way of disparagement, is found elsewhere. Such disparagement is out of place. By the mercy of God the Light that “lighteth every man” has led men to recognize the truth thus asserted, and parallels to it may be found in the writings of Conlucius, Seneca, Epictetus, and even of the Jewish Rabbis themselves. The words of Juvenal closely express the general

In the Hebrew Bible, adultery is considered a capital crime, punishable by the population stoning the adulterous wife and her lover to death. Deut. 22:20 commands this communal punishment in order to “sweep away evil from Israel.” The question remains as to why this crime was considered to be such a transgression. Several explanations exist to account for the seriousness of the crime.
In today’s society, adultery is not viewed as it would have been viewed back in the 1600’s. Adultery is defined as a voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a person who is not his or her spouse. In society today, people understand that it is not right to commit adultery, despite knowing that it is often done more. Adultery is committed more now, in the view of its not a punishable act, as it was in the 1600’s. Committing adultery in the 1600’s was considered committing one of the sins that can not be forgiven. Many people were killed for this type of act, however as generations past people begin to view adultery differently.
Metanarrative Essay The Biblical metanarrative can be explained by a Christian as the true and triumphant story from the beginning in Genesis until the future is prophesied in Revelation. Others who may not be a Christian do not understand the true power and love God has over us and for us and may just simply see it as a story or a rule book that they don’t want to follow. They see the Bible and all the things and plans God has for us and our lives and just think they don’t want any part of it and instead they live in sin. It is important that these people not only learn the true story but understand it as well.
...beral - perhaps amoral - society, adultery can be justified if we are truly in love or somehow deceived in marriage. There are many in our society today that would teach that adultery is not a great sin, but rather the guilt is the sin. They would say, "I am no devil, for there is none." In general, if you declare something not to be a sin, or at least a justifiable sin, you can do away with the guilt. According to Christian theology, however, there is a catch that states, in 1 Corinthians 32:12, "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." When we know of our self-deception perfectly, hell has arrived, the day has passed, and we are no longer able to repent. From a Christian's perspective, you can deny or disagree with what God declares to be sin, but only temporarily ...
The sinful nature of adultery is stated in the bible several times, most bluntly in Exodus: “You Must
In Puritan society adultery was considered one of the worst sins a person could commit. A person who committed adultery was usually put to death and if not was ostracized by the entire community. In the novel “The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hester Prynne commits adultery and is forced to wear a bright red “A” on all of her clothes to display that she has sinned. The “A” on Hester’s chest causes her to be tormented by society and gives her a social stigma. Hester’s husband Roger Chillingworth is tormented by Hester’s sins as well. The scarlet letter on Hester’s chest is a constant reminder of the sin that Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale committed. Due to the community’s attitude towards adultery Hester, Chillingworth, and Dimmesdale were all greatly impacted by the “A”.
Upon reading first Corinthians 6:18-20, “Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body” (
In this passage of Scripture Paul begins by making a bold statement concerning sex and marriage. He states, "It is good for a man not to touch a woman" (I Cor.
Adultery is a horrible sin to commit, but it can actually be avoided, although many people in today's society respond differently based on their religion and culture. When a person commits adultery they fail in keeping his/her commitment to their partner. When adultery happens the trust is broken in the relationship and the other person will feel deceived and betrayed.
This means that people don’t commit adultery just for sex. Aristophanes says that “no one would think it is the intimacy of sex—that mere sex is the reason each lover takes so great and deep a joy in being with the other. It’s obvious that the soul of every lover longs for something else” (176). What he means by this is that people do not share a deep joy of being together simply because of physical desire. I believe that people feel like something is missing from their life, so they try to satisfy it with sexual acts, even if they are deceiving a loved one. And sometimes one cannot avoid hurting someone even if they don’t mean to, which is why I think that if a person yearns for someone other than their spouse, they need to do the right thing and end their marriage before beginning another
The Immorality of Adultery Sex is believed, by some, to be a universal language, one that is free
Likewise also, the men, leaving the natural use of the woman burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. This quote states that the lust for another man and leaving behind the woman, who is made for man, is a sin and it shall be punished. Those who feel homosexuality is wrong feel that we should “say no” to these sinful desires and choose what is right in the eyes of God. According to them, there are more than a dozen passages in the Bible that state the sinfulness of homosexuality.... ...
The 7th of the Ten Commandments is “Thou shall not commit adultery” (The Examiner). So therefore, in biblical times, those who cheated on their spouse were stoned to death. Since then, this view has strongly changed. Now it seems that having an affair almost seems normal and even a type of pastime. Although even some people may think that
“And if a man take a wife and her mother, it is wickedness: they shall be burnt with fire , both he and they; that there be no wickedness among you ( Lev. 20:14 KJV)
