According to the documentary “Killing Us Softly 4,” average Americans are exposed to approximately 3,000 advertisements a day. Advertisements (hereafter referred to as ads) are everywhere, and they are inevitable. Sex appeal is one of the major advertising techniques that all types of media widely use. Many advertisements, thus, use sex appeal to attract consumers; however, many ads involve gender behavior patterns that give viewers the wrong idea about gender roles or ideal standards of beauty and deliver sexist messages about women in a degrading manner. It does not inform us anything about the product’s features, but female’s nude body. Hence, Tom Ford’s fragrance campaign is an advertisement that involves a high degree of sexism. This particular advertisement demeans women’s status and underestimates women’s power by objectifying female figure. It objectifies the female model by concealing her face, which is so-called fascism, and overly accentuating her body. On the other hand, men, the targeted audience, are in a position of power and dominance where they can choose to own women. The ad is again suggesting inaccurate standards of beauty for men and women. It suggests females should spend their time, money and energy to decorate their appearance to attract men, whereas males should be well off enough to afford a luxury perfume to have sex with women. I have examined and analyzed the COVERGIRL™ NatureLuxe advertisement that uses common feminine stereotypes. In this advertisement, COVERGIRL™, which runs in Seventeen magazines, targets women through their choices of colors, fonts, and images used. Certain stereotypes are used; such as, those who are more feminine tend to prefer lighter, happier colors, such as pink. Also, the use of a celebrity, who many young women look to as an icon, assists in the advertisement of the COVERGIRL™ product. COVERGIRL™, more than likely, is able to successfully market their lip-gloss product in the United States by using common gender stereotypes to show femininity and how those, mainly women, should be presented in today’s society.
This thought has been held on for far too long. In a consumer-driven society, advertisements invade the minds of every person who owns any piece of technology that can connect to the internet. Killbourne observes that “sex in advertising is pornographic because it dehumanizes and objectifies people, especially women,” (271). The speaker, Jean Kilbourne, then discusses and dissects each ad describing the messages of the advertisements and the subliminal meanings they evoke. The commercials from the past and now differ in some respects but they still suggest the same messages. These messages include but are not limited to the following: women are sexual objects, physical appearance is everything, and women are naturally inferior then men. Kilbourne discusses that because individuals are surrounded by media and advertisements everywhere they go, that these messages become real attitudes and mindsets in men and women. To sum up, it is often said that advertising is shaping women gender identity, and some have been argued that the statement is true, because of the higher amount of sexual references of women that advertisement show and the damages that occur on women’s personality and the public negative opinions of those women. Advertisements are powerful things that can convey specific messages without using words or printed text, and can be conveyed in the split-second that it takes to see the image. While using her feminist background, Bordo compares and contrasts the aspects of how men and women are portrayed in the public eye. She claims that there has been a paradigm shift the media with the theory that not just women are being objectified in the public eye, but also men too. Most of the time, women don't even realize these advertisements are formulating self-image issues. These ideals surround them daily and they become naturalized to the ads. Advertising creates an entire worldview persuading women to emulate the images they see all around them.
