Self-Regulation and Learning Theory
Analyze the various processes within each of these three learning theories from a self-regulation perspective and recommend a strategy to use each theory in a professional situation in your specialization of psychology to enhance self-regulated learning.
The processes within each of the three learning theories offer valuable self-regulation strategies for my specialization of psychology. My interest is criminology and I would have to apply all three learning theories in my cases to allow me to solve cases. Learning by observing others is called vicarious learning. The concept of vicarious learning is not one that would be subscribed to by classical behaviorists, individuals are most likely to model behavior observed by others they identify with. Identification with others is a function of the degree to which a person is perceived to be similar to one 's self, in addition to the degree of emotional attachment that is felt toward an individual. In criminology, I could use social cognitive theory as a strategy by using the tenets of social cognitive to help me understand how the criminal operate, and what he or she hopes to gain or accomplish by committing crimes, and the likelihood they will commit the crime again. Social cognitive theory is very important to my specialization because it will allow to me to make a connection between how the criminal became a criminal, why they choose to commit crimes, and the chances of them engaging in criminal acts again. In using behaviorism, I have to remember that all although it’s valuable in my field, not everything is black white, meaning I would have to determine when and if behaviorism should be applied to that situation at that time. In using social cognitive theory, the limitation would be to not use social cognitive as the answer to figuring out the criminal. Social cognitive can definitely be used, but it is important that I further my research in the criminal’s background and fully observe and analyze their behavior patterns in order to draw a more accurate conclusion of the case. In information processing the limitation would be to allow myself to process information in a way that is beneficial and don’t allow my brain to go into information overload. This could cause information to get mixed up and the research or situation becomes inaccurate. The truth is with any theory, the possibility of being wrong is always present, and it is vital to any specialization in psychology to further your research, apply the theories that make sense and carefully observe the situation I order to be accurate in your specialization situation. Social learning theory was first developed by Robert L. Burgess and Ronald L Akers in 1966 (Social Learning theory, 2016). In 1973, Akers wrote a book entitled Deviant Behaviour: A Social Learning Approach, which discussed Aker’s conception of the social learning theory. Social Learning theory is defined when an individual learns how to act from society and what others teach that individual. Some people believe crime is learned from others by watching them commit crimes. When it comes to social learning theory some of the arguments within the theory are, if individuals actually learn their behavior by watching others. As a child you grow up acting and following what others did around you some children were exposed to crime as a child and they will have a higher chance of becoming criminals. Behaviorism is a learning theory or a developmental theory that measures observable behaviors that are produced by the learner’s response to stimuli. On one end of the spectrum behaviorism is known as an attitude. At the other end, it is known as a doctrine. Each of the three learning theories, Cognitivism, Constructivism, and Behaviorism, has worth and merit in my opinion. Yet, each one has its own unique qualities with one common factor, the learning process. It seems to me that the best teacher is one who would utilize all the theories of learning. However, if I look closely, I am most likely favoring one or two more than the others in my own instructional methods. Behaviorism is the point of view where learning and behavior are described and explained in terms of stimulus-response relationships. Behaviorists agree that an individual’s behaviors is a result of their interaction with the environment. Feedback, praise and rewards are all ways people can respond to becoming conditioned. The focus is on observable events instead of events that happen in one’s head.
