Prejudice is when you make a judgement about someone or something without any knowledge about the person or the subject. An example of prejudice in “The Hobbit” is when the dwarves judged Bilbo Baggins because he is a hobbit, and they do not feel he can be trusted. In the book, the dwarves are trying to find their treasure that was stolen by a dragon. Gandalf, a wizard, tells the dwarves that Bilbo is a burglar, and that he can help them. The dwarves know that Bilbo is a hobbit, and that hobbits are quiet and don’t like adventures. They aren’t sure that Gandalf made the right recommendation, and they begin to ask Bilbo questions. On page 22, Thorin, one of the dwarves, says, “Supposing the burglar-expert gives us some ideas or suggestions.
The dwarves were on a quest to find and reclaim their famous treasure from the great dragon Smaug. It would be a long and difficult journey, and they felt it would be made simpler with the help of a burglar. This was what Bilbo was for, even if he didn’t know it. Bilbo didn’t want to be on the adventure, let alone play a vital role in it. But by the time the story concluded, Bilbo had changed from a well-to-do homebody into a burglar.
Prejudice is an issue that cannot be easily avoided in today's society. It has and always will have a huge impact on the discrimination that some people face based on religion, appearance, background, mental/physical disabilities and etc.
Gandalf has given Bilbo the chance to join him on a journey to reclaim the dwarves’ homeland. At this point Gandalf explains to the Dwarves how Bilbo is the perfect thief for them. (NEED QUOTES) Bilbo has declined Gandalf’s offer to go on the journey. Gandalf has tried to offer Bilbo to join him on the journey multiple times but he still refused to go. As Gandalf goes off without him Bilbo suddenly decides to run after he dwarves to join them on their journey, but at heart Bilbo still does not want contribute in this journey. Bilbo has declined Gandalf’s offer to go on the journey. Gandalf has tried to offer Bilbo to join him on the journey multiple times...
Prejudice is an unfavorable opinion or feeling, formed beforehand (e.g., before even meeting a person) based on non-personal characteristics (e.g., skin color, religious, gender). One form of prejudice is racism. Racism is negative attitudes and values held by people about other people based on their race. It is this attitude which causes one to discriminate against another. Discrimination is treating people unfavorably on the basis of race, color or sex. Prejudice and discrimination were prevalent in the 1950s and 1960s. This era was a time of hatred, a time of violence, a time when black people were colonized by the white colonizer, and it was a time of white-on-black racial violence. Because of this hatred, the whites discriminated against the blacks.
Prejudice is where you judge someone without knowing who the person is, or what they are like. In Maycomb some people were prejudiced especially towards black people who were called niggas, negroes. Maycomb was prejudiced against Boo Radley because he was different. He never went outside during the day, but people knew he went out at night. Bob Ewell was prejudiced against Atticus because he was defending a negro, also because Atticus had power and Bob Ewell didn’t.
In the book West Side Story by Arthur Laurents there were many prejudices. Prejudice is a favoring or dislike of something without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge. There were prejudices in West Side Story that had to do with the types of people, their races and sex. Sometimes prejudice can be in small doses and can be meaningless, other times prejudice can be very serious and cause death.
Prejudice meaning pre-judging someone and having an unwarranted bias occurs often in today’s society and has been around since the beginning of time. Prejudice can effect people’s decisions and have an unfair impact on society. The text ‘To kill a mocking-bird’ written by Harper Lee and the movie ‘Philadelphia’ directed by Jonathon Demme explore this idea thoroughly.
Chapter 1: Bilbo Baggins is a rich hobbit living in a hole in The Hill. Hobbits are half the size of humans. They love drinking and eating and being happy and comfortable at home. Bilbo is sitting outside one day by his front door smoking when the wizard Gandalf comes to him. Gandalf often comes to The Hill and tells weird stories and want to bring young hobbits on an adventure. The next day, Gandalf and thirteen dwarves: Dwalin, Balin, Kili, Fili, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, and Thorin visit Bilbo. Gandalf shows a map made by Thror that shows where the treasure is hidden. Gandalf gives Thorin the key to the entrance. Thorin tells a story about people who were happy and lived under the Mountain until the dragon Smaug
While prejudice and discrimination are closely related, the terms are not interchangeable. Prejudice is a negative attitude, feelings, thoughts or beliefs toward an entire category of people. There are two important factors that are present in the definition of prejudice, and they are attitude and entire category (Schaefer 35).
A prejudice is an opinion based on no actual reason or experience. Prejudice can be seen almost everyday and cannot be eliminated. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the author expresses acts of prejudice throughout the book. In the novel, children are shown making prejudice because their minds are much more imaginative and they have a different way of precepting things.
The Hobbit is the story of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who lives in Hobbiton. He enjoys a peaceful and pastoral life but his life is interrupted by a surprise visit by the wizard Gandalf. Before Bilbo is really able to improve upon the situation, Gandalf has invited himself to tea and when he arrives, he comes with a company of dwarves led by Thorin. They are embarking on a journey to recover lost treasure that is guarded by the dragon Smaug, at the Lonely Mountain. Gandalf has decided, much to Bilbo's chagrin, that the hobbit will make an excellent addition to the team and Bilbo is going to play the role of a burglar. As they start on their way, Bilbo has serious misgivings.
Tolkien’s The Hobbit consists of many points of view on Bilbo including the leader of the company, Thorin. In the eyes of Thorin, he sees no reason to add any new people to the company. Bilbo’s foil backs this idea up with to statement “What is our Burglar doing for us.”(pg.208). The Great Wizards decision for choosing the Hobbit is questioned by the leader. Statements like this one illustrate why Bilbo pushes himself to prove his worth to Thorin. While the leader is irritated with the thought of having the hobbit there, the rest of the members come to respect the tiny hobbit. As the novel continues the dwarfs begin to comprehend the purpose Bilbo has. Tolkien reveals what the dwarfs are thinking by stating, “they had come to respect little Bilbo…[and had] become the real leader in their adventure” verifying Bilbos efforts to win Thorin over have worked on all but Thorin. The hobbits foil shows kindness to Bilbo towards the end of the book. As Thorin lies on his death bed through his blood filled words he remarks “If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” The uncanny apology Thorin chokes up shows his real character and his nobility to admit he was wrong and wants Bilbo to know he cherished their friendship. Through these words, Thorin alludes to the nobility and bravery the burglar demonstrates throughout the novel. As Thorin’s initial view of Bilbo may have been wrong, he can see the hobbits true nature through
From the reading I learned prejudice is when a person attaches negative emotion to a certain group of people that is not based on facts. Prejudice has two levels cognitive or affective where the cognitive is thinking and feeling prejudice while affecting is actually doing prejudice actions. Discrimination is also discussed in chapter one. Discrimination is unequal behavior or treatment of a person based on them being a member of a group. An example of discrimination would be not getting selected for a job because you are African
During his transformation, Bilbo began to display his intelligence and resourcefulness in various obstacles and he gradually gained the respect of Thorin and the dwarves. When the dwarves met Bilbo in the beginning of the novel, it is immediately evident that they are incredibly uncertain of Bilbo and highly doubt his burglary skills. "Will he do, do you think? It is all very well for Gandalf to talk about this hobbit being fierce, but one shriek like that in a moment of excitement would be enough to wake the dragon and all of his relatives, and kill the lot of us.” (Page 18, paragraph 2) Throughout the first portion of the book, the dwarves continued to be sceptical of the hobbit and ridiculed his abilities, but the dwarves progressively began to respect him.
Prejudice is an unjustified opinion for another human being that can be sparked for the simplest reasons. Throughout history, prejudice has plagued the world- in fact, in the eighteenth hundreds, it was detrimental to have a darker skin color. In literature, the idea of prejudice is incessant especially in the famous story of Frankenstein, by Mary Shelly. Victor fashions together unused decayed body parts to create his creature. Nearly everyone assumes he is horrible dangerous based off his appearance. At first appearance, the creature is terrifying, but eventually we learn he is warm-hearted. From start to finish, he is hit with endless amounts of prejudice and as a result of the author’s work, Shelly was able to show the world the psychological
