"Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee there are very important themes. Including justice, don’t judge a book by its cover, and loss of innocence. Harper Lee portrays the legal system realistically. She shows that is not always fair and it is not always justice. It is through Atticus that we learn that the legal system is only as just as the community it serves. Justices is an issue in the book. An example is that persecuting someone because they have black skin is injustice. Tom Robinson is falsely accused of rape. A lot of justice and injustice happened outside of the courtroom. For example both Cecil Jacobs and the Finches cousin Francis are served a little justice by Scout in the form of a physical blow. Quite a few people in this book have been judged by their appearance, history, attitude. For example Boo Radley was judged by his history. His history meaning rumors that he stabbed his father and he was demented. But he turned out to be a hero by saving Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell. Another example is when the trial was going on, Mayella was judged by the town. People thought she was mentally unstable because she just kept crying and screaming throughout the whole case. On the other hand Atticus was being judged just for defending an innocent black man. The whole town called him a “nigger lover”. But throughout the case people realised that Atticus’s evidence is accurate and sufficient. The most obvious misjudging was that the whole town thought Tom Robinson raped Mayella Ewell just because his was colored. No one would dare think that a white man would rape a
