Humanism and Heroism The Odyssey demonstrates Odysseus' hero and human characteristics throughout his journey. His humanism is demonstrated when he displays his curiosity and feelings during his encounters on his journey. However, Odysseus demonstrates heroism when he is defeating obstacles in his journey. Another way his heroism is shown was when he saves his crew for danger. In the Odyssey, Odysseus demonstrates characteristics of a hero and human. In the Odyssey, Odysseus demonstrates humanism by displaying his feelings towards Calypso, the sweet nymph. In "Calypso, The Sweet Nymph" Odysseus was "tear to tear brimming his eyes"(lines 77-79). This exemplifies Odysseus's humanism characteristic because he felt guilt over leaving Calypso. At the Cyclops island, Odysseus ended up landing his crew in danger. In "The Cyclops", Odysseus' " curiosity leads him into the Cyclops cave"(Book 9). Polyphemus was one Odysseus's dangerous obstacles. Odysseus and his crew are trapped until Odysseus "rams a spike deep in Polyphemus's crater eye" (lines 377-378). This exemplifies heroism because his clever idea of telling Polyphemus that his name is "Nohbdy" (line 360) and blinding him got his crew out of trouble, but it landed themselves into more trouble. After they escaped, Odysseus faced the witch Circe, who turned his men into pigs. In " The Witch Circe", Odysseus is given a plant that weakens Circe's power (book 10). Odysseus's last obstacle is the suitors. Odysseus arrives home and lands into deep conflict of facing the suitors. In "Death At The Palace", Odysseus declares that "there will be killing"(line 1284).
