Book Thief Discussions Question #11
Markus Zusak uses many literary devices to pull in the readers though one device he uses that is exceptionally outstanding is his use of foreshadowing. Zusak though reveals the final outcome he does not give away details of the plot. It is human nature to want to know more than what we already do hence as to why foreshadowing is so important it pulls in the reader to read more, to find out more detail as to what really happens.
Personally my experience with reading this story and what truly drew me in was when death states a sorrow for Rudy Steiner whenever Liesel wouldn't kiss him. “A Small Announcement About Rudy Steiner:He didn’t deserve to die the way
he did”(Zusak 241), which of course foreshadows Rudy’s apparent horrible death. I wanted to know what exactly happened to Rudy,How did he die? When does he die? Where is he when he dies? Who was he with? Was he with Liesel? Did he die alone and painful? Those were the series of questions I asked myself when I heard this foreshadow, using Death’s narration I wanted to keep reading and find the ultimate answer to these questions. Here is another foreshadow that death gives off, “It is a story about one of those perpetual survivors” (Zusak 5), we later find out he was essentially talking about Liesel. This indicates that though Liesel survives the ones around her drop like flies, this again leads to the intriguing questions of the fate of the characters. It seems our narrator who just so happens to be death,loves to spoil things one other foreshadow he gives us is when he says “ They glued down,every last one of them. A packet of souls. Was it fate? Misfortune? Is that what glued them down like that? Of course not. Let’s not be stupid. It probably had more to do with hurried bombs, thrown down by humans hiding in the clouds.” (Zusak 12-13), though this foreshadow is really metaphorical and a little tricky to identify, our narrator is trying to tell us that though we don't know it now, a bomb will be dropped by an airstrike at some point in the book, and another set of questions arrive, as to where this bomb will be dropped, and who drops this bomb, the Nazi’s? Americans? as well as who would die that fateful night. Here death basically tells us why he lets us know the climax of the plots, “ Of course I’m being rude. I’m spoiling the ending. I have given you two events in advance, because I don’t have much interest in building mystery. Mystery bores me. It chores me. I know what happens and so do you. It’s the machinations that wheel us there that aggravate, perplex,interest, and astound me.” (Zusak 243), Death basically explains his avoidance to mystery. Why is foreshadowing so important because it draws the reader in,it makes a reader feel ironically suspenseful in a sense that though the outcome is revealed to the readers it is truly not because there is always more than just our end, there is a beginning, there is a middle and there is an end, to which the story behold much to read.
“The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak is narrated by death and begins when Liesel’s brother dies on a train with her and her mother. At her brother’s burial, she steals her first book, “The Grave Digger’s Handbook” and soon after is separated from her mother and sent to live with foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann, in Molching, where the majority of the book takes place. At school, Liesel is teased because she can’t read so Hans teaches her to read when she wakes up from her frequent nightmares about her brother’s death. Hans is a painter and an accordion player and also plays the accordion for her after her nightmares. Liesel grows very close with Hans and also becomes close friends with her neighbor Rudy Steiner who constantly asks her to
In last resource that the author used to create suspense was foreshadowing. Foreshadowing was used because at the end of the story Mr.Atkinson began to sharpen his knives late night while James was writing down of what happened to him that day. Does that seem that Mrs.Atkinson wanted to kill James. For me thats weird.” The leg is cracked, and Atkinson, who seems handy man with his tools, is going to mend it as soon as he has finished putting an edge on his chisel.” I choose this quote for the reason that explains what Atkinson was doing at the time when everything was going
In the story The Monkey's Paw the foreshadowing creates tension and suspense because during the story there was so many things going on and you didn't know what was going to happen next. I say this because in the Monkey's Paw the author writes He raised his hand. "I wish my son alive again." This quote explains foreshadowing by suspense because when he wishes for his son to be alive again it gives the audience suspense if he is going to actually be alive again or if it's not going to come true and they are going to be disappointed.
Foreshadowing hints at what might happen next in the story. Elie used foreshadowing to show loss of faith when one of the Jews from his town was captured. “Without passion or haste, they shot the prisoners who were forced to approach the trench and offer their necks” (6). After this happened the other Jews in town never believed the captured Jew. After no one had believed the Jew he lost faith because the other Jews had no idea what was going to happen to them later on in the story which is an example of foreshadowing. There is a lady in night in the camp with Elie. She is abandoned by her family and separated in the camp. “The separation had totally shattered her”(24). This foreshadows what might happen to Elie later on in the story when his father dies. That would cause him to lose
He is pushed off a cliff and drowns. 2. What is the difference between a.. Because this was a mystery novel, foreshadowing was very heavily used in the book. Foreshadowing is very useful in a mystery novel, because a mystery novel is all about suspense, and foreshadowing is a great tool to increase the suspense.
What the author is doing is letting the reader foreshadow. A technique which creates suspense, a vital element in any action story. The author then explained what was being hinted at;
In the novel, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, foreshadowing is used a great deal throughout the whole story. From the beginning to the end, it appears everywhere hinting on what will happen in order to make the book more enjoyable. It was used to show that Lennie will be getting into trouble with Curley's wife, the death of Lennie, and exactly how he dies.
Human nature has many elements that reveal the growth and personality of a person. In Markus Zusak’s “The Book Thief”, the author successfully portrays various aspects of human nature through Hans’ conflicts that originate from the tough reality that he lives in. Elements of human nature can be seen as a result of Hans’ constant struggles with guilt, kindness, and love.
Foreshadowing: Author hints at what can possibly happen in the story by using the text.
Effectively using foreshadowing in a piece of literature enhances the reader's curiosity. One clear example of such usage is seen in Kate Chopin's writing. Her use of foreshadowing in the short story "The Storm" adds an element of intrigue, holding the reader's interest throughout. In this story a father and son, Bobinôt and Bibi, are forced to remain in the store where they were shopping, waiting for an approaching storm to pass. Meanwhile, the wife and mother, Calixta, remaining at home, receives an unexpected visit from a former lover of hers, Alcée. The two lovers ultimately consummate their relationship. Alcée then departs once the storm subsides, at which time the father and son return home. No repercussions of the extramarital affair take place within the story.
In today’s society, technology seems to rule the world. Often times people don’t think about the consequences that it brings. One man, however, did think about the effects and used his writing to warn others about them. In the story The Veldt, Ray Bradbury uses characterization and foreshadowing to convey that adaptability to technology can cause separation between children and parents.
