Is Empathy the Answer to Racism and Prejudice




Do you now someone who never judged someone because they look weird, dress weird, etc. That is what empathy is. It is the ability to “walk two moons in another man's moccasins”. In other words it means not judge someone before you walk in there shoes and see life from their perspective. In “To Kill A Mockingbird” the author repeatedly shows examples of this. When Scout, Jem, and Dill are scared of Boo Radley it isn’t until Jem walks in Boo’s shoes that he understands all the hurt he feels. That's an example in the book of prejudice. Seeing something from a different perspective really helps you gather evidence about an event or a case. That's why the judge of a case always like as many witnesses as possible. They like to see the facts and the lies. In school teachers may have you write about an event from a perspective of someone else's point of view. This is so that an event in the past that may have been bad, you could be writing it from a perspective of someone who thought it was a good event. This is referring to the book, but let's talk about this problem in modern terms. In Chicago there are lots of cops killing African-American people. This is the most recent form of racism in America. These cops have to make life-death decisions in a blink of an eye. They can’t show empathy just in case these people are actually dangerous, but the people caucasian and African-Americans show empathy toward the innocent people killed by cops wrong move. They share hope to the families of innocent people killed. But this isn’t the cops fault. The racism and prejudice starting when slavery happened in America.
