In the novel ‘The Great Gatsby’, Fitzgerald explored the idea of self-delusion through Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby. Nick often describes himself as ‘‘Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known’. The quote above was referred to when he wants to officially in a relationship with Jordan, he must end his relationship with another girl at home. Throughout the novel, Nick wants to build himself up as an honest person and also as a viewer. But as the story goes on, we can clearly tell that he had self-deluded about his personality and his position in the story. There were two affairs in the story, one was Myrtle and Tom and the other one was Gatsby
The Great Gatsby is widely known and loved by many readers. This I partially believe is due to its ability to connect with our present society. One way it is able to do this is by portraying the different forms of carelessness humans tend to take on during everyday life. Almost every character mentioned is careless in some way whether it be major or minor, much like people in today's society. Some of these forms are minute and do not affect how the novel plays out very much if at all, and others are completely the opposite.
The character, Jay Gatsby from the book “The Great Gatsby” suffers from Narcissistic Borderline Personality Disorder. Narcissistic means that a person has a strong need or want to be successful. People who are considered to be Narcissistic also have a strong need for power, love, and a sense of entitlement (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). People who are considered to have Borderline Personality Disorder are typically moody. They go from happy to angry, and usually have a feeling of emptiness. They are often doing anything they can to avoid real or imagined abandonment (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).

Conversely, Nick Carraway, the composed narrator of The Great Gatsby, confidently states that he is the most honest person he knows, a result of being surrounded by unbounded toxic characters. One of the most common character traits seen in the people of the roaring twenties/Jazz Age was phoniness. This is one of the many things that F. Scott Fitzgerald made clear with his novel The Great Gatsby. In this book many of the characters don’t show their true selves, instead they put on an act, a fabricated version of themselves in order to impress others. Throughout this essay I will be going over two of these character’s true personality’s as opposed to their counterfeit ones. I will also discuss how the theme of phoniness portrays the Roaring Twenties setting, as well as how Fitzgerald’s opinion of the American Dream counters into the story.
The society that we live in today is built around lies. Banks lying to customers in order to feed the capitalist mindset, politicians lying to citizens in order to gain power, and charities taking donations with open arms however are stingy when giving back to the cause. The common reason why these organizations lie is to hide what they truly are. People also deceive others in order to hide who they truly are. From a young age lying becomes engraved into one’s mind, we are taught to walk, talk, and lie. As explained in “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson, we lie because it benefits us for personal gain. Everyone lies for different reasons, whether to protect yourself or others. The world of “The Great Gatsby” is driven by lies from people who wish to keep their true selves unknown.
Nick Carroway is not a very judgmental person, in fact, he himself states that he withholds judgment so that he can get the entire story out of the person to whom he is listening. To say that Nick is both approving and disapproving is not suspiring, for Nick rarely looks at things from only one perspective. Nick finds Gatsby to be ignorantly honest, in that Gatsby could not fathom the idea of saying something without really meaning it. He respects Gatsby for his determination to fit in with the East Egg crowd, though Gatsby does not realize that he does not really fit in with them. On the other hand, Nick sees Gatsby to be excessively flashy and, in the words of Holden Caulfield, 'phony.' Gatsby's whole life is a lie from the moment he left behind the name James Gatz and became Jay Gatsby. Gatsby lies about his past to try to have people perceive him as an 'old money' guy when that really is not necessary. Gatsby's valiant efforts to lure Daisy are respectable, yet they show Gatsby's failure to accept reality and give up on his long lost dream.
As defined in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, an obsession is “a persistent disturbing preoccupation with an often unreasonable idea or feeling” or “compelling motivation” (Obsession). Gatsby was obsessed with gaining wealth in order to draw Daisy back to him and he lived an illusion of love with Daisy. Though Jay Gatsby’s obsessions are the most prominent, they are not the only ones present. Tom and Daisy Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson also have obsessions, but it is the combination of them that causes problems. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the fixations of wealth and love of many characters, lead to the downfall of many lives and create chaos in others.

Throughout the entire novel it is clearly portrayed that Nick Carraway is not a moral character by any stretch of the imagination. Nick Carraway may seem to have some good values, but he is in fact immoral for many reasons. First, Nick uses Jordan Baker; he never actually became interested in a serious relationship with the golf star. Miss Baker is basically just a fling to him. Secondly, Nick Carraway always seems to be the middleman in all the trouble that is going on in the novel. The narrator knows about all the lying, deceiving, two-faced things that are going on throughout the story, and he is completely ok with it. Also Nick defends Gatsby even though he very well knows of all Gatsby's criminal activity and liquor smuggling. Finally, Nick is the character who sets up two of the main characters, Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby, to have an affair. It never crosses Nick's mind that it is an immoral thing to set up an affair. During the novel there is a discussion between Gatsby and Nick about when to set up the secret meeting with Daisy. During this exchange Nick actually says, "I'm going to call up Daisy tomorrow and invite her over here to tea.

The honesty that Nick attributes to himself must be a nearly perfect one, by dint of both its rarity and its "cardinal" nature; Nick asserts for himself that he is among the most honest people he has ever encountered. Events in the book, however, do not bear this self-characterization out; far from being among the most honest people in world, Nick Carraway is in fact a proficient liar, though he never loses his blind faith in his own pure honesty.
What distinguishes a dream from reality? Many combine the two, often creating confusing and disappointing results. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald emphasizes the impact that reality has on an individual by examining the life of Jay Gatsby. This twentieth-century piece of literature holistically portrays the Jazz Age and accurately captures life in the 1920s. This decade was a time in which many individuals strove towards fulfilling the American Dream. The extravagant and lavish lifestyle which many people lived depicted their romantic desire for wealth. This constant greed and artificial attitude consequentially produced fantastic misconceptions of reality. Jay Gatsby’s life parallels the lives of those who lived during the 1920s because similarly to Gatsby, they too had no astonishing beginnings and created deceptions that were the only route to the American dream. The significance of understanding the difference between what is fantasy and what is reality is crucial, as Gatsby is the epitome of the result of dreams dictating a person’s actions. Fitzgerald suggests that fantasy never matches reality and successfully proves this by comparing the fantasy that Gatsby creates to reality.
Lying has deadly effects on both the individual who lies and those around them. This concept is demonstrated in The Great Gatsby. Although Gatsby, Tom and Myrtle have different motives for being deceitful, they all lie in order to fulfill their desires and personal needs. Myrtle’s desire to be wealthy is illustrated when she first meets Tom, dressed in his expensive clothing, as her attitude changes when she puts on the luxurious dress and when she encourages Tom to buy her a dog. Tom’s deception is clear when he hides his affair with Myrtle by placing Myrtle in a different train, withholding the truth from Mr. Wilson of the affair and convincing Myrtle and Catherine that he will one day marry Myrtle. Gatsby tries to convince himself and others that he is the son of wealthy people, he creates an appearance that he is a successful, educated man through the books in his library and assures himself that Daisy loves him. Tom’s dishonesty reveals that he is selfish, while Gatsby’s distortions expose his insecurities, and Myrtle’s misrepresentations show that her sole focus in life is to achieve materialistic success. Gatsby and Myrtle both lie in order to obtain the “American dream.” However, Tom, who appears to already have achieved the “American dream”, deceives others out of boredom and because he takes his wealthy lifestyle for granted. F. Scott Fitzgerald demonstrates the human flaw of dishonesty for personal gain and how lies have inevitably tragic consequences in his characterization of Gatsby, Myrtle and Tom.
From the beginning of The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Nick Carraway is developed as a reliable narrator. His honesty and sense of duty are established as he remarks on his own objectivity and willingness to withhold judgment. However, as the book progresses and Nick’s relationship with Jay Gatsby grows more intimate, it is revealed that Nick is not as reliable as previously thought when it comes to Gatsby. Nick perceives Gatsby as pure and blameless, although much of Gatsby's persona is false. Because of his friendship and love for Gatsby, his view of the events is fogged and he is unable to look at the situation objectively.
