Gandalf
By: Cassidy boynton#3
“ True courage is about knowing when to take a life and when to spear one.” In the fantasy novel The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, an interesting character in the book was Gandalf. Gandalf was a very interesting character because of his character traits. An example of the character traits that Gandalf had are that he has courage, he is caring, and most of all he is very wise.
“ Courage is the best defense that you have now.” Gandalf has courage because when he was choosing Bilbo baggins for his bugler he saw something in Bilbo which gave him the courage to choose Bilbo as his bugler. Another way Gandalf shows his courage is when he gives the map to the dwarves out of courage and trust but he has courage in them by him giving him the other part of the map that they will find the lonely mountain and get the gold back. So throughout the book Gandalf shows his courage in many ways, it may have been in big gestures like when he gave the dwarves the map or it would be in small gestures like when he choose Bilbo to be the bugler, but in many ways he shows courage throughout the book The Hobbit.

“ Some believe that it is only great power that can hold evil in check!
But that is what i’ve found. I found it is the small things. Every day deeds by ordinary folk that keeps darkness at bay.” Gandalf is very caring because he believes that being nice to someone can either make their day much better or even just doing something nice to someone that it can impact their day and make them fall better. Some ways that he shows this is when he has a group of dwarves have steel the gold from smaug and to get to the lonely mountain, instead of having a group of elves the the journey. Another way that he shows that he is caring is when Bilbo was coming back from the lonely mountain he set up transportation for him so he could get back safely. In the book Gandalf demonstrates that he is caring in many different ways many
times. “So do all that see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” In the book The Hobbit Gandalf plays a very wise character. He knows what is good and what is bad or who to trust and who not to trust. An example in the book is when Gandalf, Bilbo, and the dwarves were being chased by the orgs, when they got surrounded by the orgs Thorin wanted to fight them off but Gandalf found a underground cave nearby that they could go into so they wouldn’t be killed. So what his action said when he choose to go into the cave instead of just fighting them off is that he always finds the alternative way to do things or the safer way to do things. Throughout the entire book Gandalf shows that he is wise in many different ways, may it be a different way to do things or just a few words to inspire to person he shows he is wise in many ways. Gandalf is a courageous, brave, and wise character in the book The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. I think that the most important character trait that Gandalf has is that he is brave because Gandalf is a Magical wizard and if Gandalf wasn’t brave then would would he be scared to use his powers? I guess we will never know because Gandalf is the polar opposite of scared because he fought right alongside the dwarves to get to the lonely mountain to the gold back. But overall without any of these character traits Gandalf would not be the beloved Gandalf we all know and love.
1.During the quest to destroy the ring Gandalf must make some sacrifices to help advance the quest. When they are running through the Mines of Moria they awaken a beast named Balrog that has been asleep for thousands of years. The Balrog is chasing them through the mines until they get to a bridge. When they are on the bridge they all cross, but Gandalf. Gandalf looks at the beast and fights it off while everyone else escapes. This is where he got his famous line, “ You shall not
In The Fellowship of the Ring and in the Star Wars trilogy, Frodo Baggins and Luke Skywalker, the archetypal heroes, demonstrate the heroic quality of selflessness for Frodo when he leaves the Shire then when he takes up the ring at Rivendell and finally when he attempts to leave Mordor by himself, and Luke shows selflessness when he goes to save Leia and then when he joins the Rebel Alliance and finally when he goes to redeem his father. Both Frodo and Luke demonstrate selflessness in their respective worlds with Frodo when he leaves the Shire and when Luke goes to save Leia. Leaving the Shire and accepting the mission that Gandalf gives him to bring the ring to Rivendell, Frodo shows his selflessness. He admits what he is stating “‘I am
When wandering physically or mentally, courage will lead you back to the path. In “Home of the Brave” a heart touching memoir by Katherine Applegate, Kek experiences his new life in America with the assistance of his caring friends and family. He struggles along the way but never loses hope to find his mother. The most important theme in “Home of the Brave” is courage. Courage is when you have hope to better the future for you and others. This theme is shown when Kek continuously strives to find his mother even though his friends are indirectly saying that she is gone.
Bravery is like a very trusted friend, it will never let you down. That statement holds true in the great epic of "Beowulf." "Beowulf" is the story of a great hero who comes to the aid of a troubled king. Beowulf hears that king Hrothgar is having trouble and immediately comes to help with no questions asked. he defeats the monster, Grendel, with his bare hands. Beowulf then defeats Grendel's mother along with a dragon until he is fatally injured. Bravery is a very admirable characteristic that few people possess.
Courage is when you know you’re beaten. The character Atticus, for instance, who was a seasoned lawyer acted courageous defending Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was a black man who was accused of raping a white girl. Atticus was appointed to defend him. Jem was happy because he thought his father had won the case but Reverend Sykes loathed telling Jem “Now don’t you be so confident, Mr. Jem, I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man…”(Lee 208). Atticus was sure he wasn’t going to win the case, nevertheless he gave it a try. That didn’t stop Atticus from trying to defend his client Tom Robinson. Another part in the novel when Atticus was courageous was when he shot at the man street dog. Heck Tate the Maycomb Sheriff was not as courageous as Atticus so he handed Atticus the air rifles and with one shot Atticus took down the street dog. Miss Maudie says “I saw that, One Shot Finch” (Lee 97). Atticus was referred to as one-shot finch because of his shooting skills. The other incidence in the novel when Atticus portrays courage was when he was not scared when Bob Ewell threatened him. Bob Ewell was the man who accused Atticus’ defendant Tom Robinson of raping his daughter Mayella. Atticus thought Bob Ewell threatened him as some sort of revenge, but unfortunately Atticus was wrong because when Bob Ewell said ...
To be courageous you cannot be deterred by possible outcomes that may involve danger or pain. To be courageous you have to be more than brave you have to be undaunted and have a heart of a lion. Through Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird courage and determination are embedded through the character’s actions. Atticus Finch, a lawyer in Maycomb County, explains to his son Jem, “I wanted him to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see if through no matter what.(Lee 149)” Through this quote Harper Lee is trying to convey that, real courage is more than appearance it is a significant action
When legends are told throughout the world about heroes, the picture that we have of that hero is someone like Beowulf. However, the reason why we see Bilbo Baggins as a hero is because he is so similar to the rest of us. He portrays the average person but Bilbo has gone the extra step. He takes risks and faces battles that seem impossible to conquer. This is why we he is a hero. He does everything that we wis...

Bravery is a trait that every young boy wishes to have. It is a desire that is embedded into each human being. It is only whether or not he or she acts on this desire to be brave that matter s. Aristotle writes, “{Bravery} courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees the others.” When Beowulf heard of the atrocities that Grendle was committing to the people of Herot, it was bravery that brought him there as their savor, and without fear he would
Has anyone ever shown bravery in your life? Bravery is someone who’s not afraid to step up to the challenge, Like in the book The Hobbit Bilbo shows that quite a few times, and an article about a cop saving his partner. Bravery is someone who has courage and is not afraid of something others might be afraid of , anyone can be brave and it can happen when you least expect it.
One example was when Bilbo faced off against Gollum in the goblin tunnel, this was most certainly one of Bilbo's greatest acts of courage. When Bilbo woke up underground and had no idea where he was, he then soon finds Gollum. The sneaky sea creature declared a match of trickery riddles. Gollum was more than surprised when Bilbo defeated him by asking the question “what have I got in my pocket” (78). The answer of course was Gollum's ring of invisibility. What makes Bilbo so audacious is he has no idea what he is getting himself into. To Bilbo, it is all the unknown so he walks by himself with pride into these situations. Another proof of Bilbo's daringness is when he faces Smaug alone in the Lonely Mountains. Bilbo was more ready to challenge Smaug than he ever would have been at the beginning of his adventure. When it comes time to encounter Smaug for the first time, Bilbo hears his snoring so he knew he was asleep. Although Smaug later noticed, Bilbo left his lair with a two handled golden cup. The second time Bilbo journeys into Smaug's lair the dragon pretended to be asleep at first, then startles Bilbo when he begins to have a conversation with him. While in discussion, Bilbo purposely replies only in riddle to him while discovering his weak spot which was above his left breast. Bilbo comes out alive by outrunning Smaug's deathly flames. Bilbo has proven himself
Many people believe that to have courage, you must conquer something physically challenging. Courage is a quality in which the mind is able to confront any difficulty, whether that be fear, danger or even pain. Scout and her older brother Jem are both influenced by
In J.R.R. Tolkien 's novel The Hobbit, male friendship is a major theme that exists throughout the text. Male individuals form special bonds with one another through loyalty and support. Even in the warlike setting through the whole of the novel, characters who otherwise couldn 't be friends find a common ground and are able to form a friendship and become dependable. In the Fandom, the importance of these male characters retaining their friendships is relevant everywhere in art, fan fiction, and blogs. However since there are a lack of female characters in the text to create a romantic connection with, fans often sexualize the relationships from the novel. Regardless of how the fandom changes the roles of the relationships, male companionship
A characteristic not many people have is courage. Courage can be difficult to obtain or it can be easy. Acting upon fearful choices makes a person courageous. Courageous figures are the 2000 Stripling Warriors. These young men were morally straight, courageous, faithful, and brave. Anybody can be courageous through actions and morals. One of the most important attributes is courage.
In the story of “The Hobbit”, each character takes on a specific characteristic. In each of these characters identity on the surface is decided more by their race, family and their past rather than anything else in the beginning of the story. By making definite choices each character comes to define their own fate and
