How many relationships in your life are affected by control, whether it be you being the one in control, or you being controlled? In the book A Midsummer Night’s Dream many of the relationships between the characters are affected by control. The control between a lovestruck teenager, Hermia, and her father Egues, starts off the play and launches much of the conflict in the story. Another pair in A Midsummer Night’s dream that is strongly affected by control is the relationship between Oberon, the king of the fairies, and his queen Titania. The control that Oberon displayed over Titania is the second show of control that most affects the plot. One of these examples is the control that Oberon, the king of the fairies, feels he has over his wife Titania. One example of control can be found when he and Titania first start talking in act 2 scene 1. Oberon has clearly been enraged by something Titania has done and in order to take back the power that he feels he’s lost to her he says “tarry, rash wanton. Am not I thy lord?” This line is Oberon's reminder to Titania that because he is her husband she should obey him. The couple continues to argue for some time about an indian boy who Titania has taken under her wing after the boy’s mother - a friend of Titania - died. When Titania stays persistent in her refusal to deliver the boy to Oberon who wants to make the boy into his servant, Oberon decides to force his way. Oberon does this by whispering into the ear of Puck, his most loyal servant, and says “when I have the juice of that flower, I’ll trickle some drops of it on Titania’s eyes while she’s sleeping. She’ll fall madly in love with the first thing she sees when she wakes up… I can cure her by treating her with another plant—I’ll make her give me that little boy as my page. ” This means that that in order to force Titania into giving up the little indian boy Oberon is going to make her fall in love with someone by using magic and then he will strike a deal with the queen that entails that if she gives up the boy, he will give her the …show more content…

Control can be seen in a family bond like the one between Egues who’s trying to force his daughter, Hermia, to follow his will. The relationship between the married rulers of the fairies, Titania and Oberon; Oberon who decides to play a nasty trick on his wife to get her to give him an indian boy who he wants as his servant. Also, the relationship between Puck, the loyal servant of Oberon, and the four teenagers is entirely based on control as Puck is controlling their love lives. All the character in A Midsummer Night’s Dream are intertwined with each other because of control; therefore, the entire story line depends on
