Blindness is the loss of sight, and it can be temporary or permanent, but can it be more complex than we know. Native Son was written by Richard Wright. It tells a story about a twenty-year-old man named Bigger Thomas, who is uneducated and black. He and his family lived in a one-room apartment on Chicago’s South Side during the 20th century. When given the opportunity to work for a wealthy, white family called the Daltons, he ended up murdering their only daughter, Mary. This murder was a result of blindness. Throughout Native Son, Wright revealed that blindness affects everyone who used stereotypes to view the people that is not the same race as them which usually leads to an unfortunate outcome. Dalton. After Bigger encounter with Jan, he went to the store and bought some writing materials. While walking to Bessie’s home, he saw a sign on a building where he decided that it will be the drop-off spot. Standing there alone, he thought to himself “Even though Mr. Dalton gave millions of dollars for Negro education, he would rent houses to Negros only in this prescribed area, this corner of the city tumbling down from rot.”(Wright 174) This quote reveals the irony in the way Mr. Dalton act. He thought he did the most he can do like donating millions. Mr. Dalton does not know that he only really helping the selected few instead of the whole community. His blindness was a result of thinking that he contribute greatly toward the black community instead his donation did not help the overall situation. It makes his contribution seem meaningless since he gets back more from the rental money of the blacks. Unknowingly, it was his actions that anger the blacks and many African Americans might consider him fake for acting all nice when he really is not. It was the stereotypes within society that created this blindfold and made Mr. Dalton blind forever making it a factor for the death of his own
“The Lesson” and “Horatio Alger” illustrate that success is not as easy as the myth claims it to be, but rather challenging. Dalton believes that race is such a key factor that it is affecting the system because it is looked down upon. It is dangerous because some people do not like the fact that they have opportunities. “Horatio Alger”, for example, shows that the path of success is easy for anyone to grasp and fails to unveil the real struggles that is being encountered which Dalton is trying to state because, he says, “Black folk certainly know what it is like to be favored, disfavored, scrutinized, and ignored all on the basis of our race. Sometimes we are judged on a different scale altogether” (273). Dalton is trying to state that black people know what it’s like to be judged and because of this it creates a road block because African Americans believe that they need to be treated differently and they cannot be as great as us. In addition, race has become a huge problem that people tend to cause huge tensions and the way “Horatio Alger’s” essay states that everyone is equal would not be true. The theme that Native Son author Richard Wright puts in this story is that the white community makes Bigger act the way he does, that through the communities actions, Bigger does all the things he is accused of doing. The theme that I present is that Bigger only acts the way that he did because of the influences that the white community has had on him accepted by everyone. When Bigger gets the acceptance and love he has always wanted, he acts like he does not know what to do, because really, he does not. In Native Son, Bigger uses his instincts and acts like the white people around him have formed him to act. They way that he has been formed to act is to not trust anyone. Bigger gets the acceptance and love he wanted from Mary and Jan, but he still hates them and when they try to really get to know him, he ends up hurting them. He is scared of them simply because he has never experienced these feelings before, and it brings attention to him from himself and others. Once Bigger accidentally kills Mary, he feels for the first time in his life that he is a person and that he has done something that somebody will recognize, but unfortunately it is murder. When Mrs. Dalton walks in and is about to tell Mary good night, Bigger becomes scared stiff with fear that he will be caught committing a crime, let alone rape. If Mrs. Dalton finds out he is in there he will be caught so he tries to cover it up and accidentally kills Mary. The police ask why he did not just tell Mrs. Dalton that he was in the room, Bigger replies and says he was filled with so much fear that he did not know what else to do and that he did not mean to kill Mary. He was so scared of getting caught or doing something wrong that he just tried to cover it up. This is one of the things that white people have been teaching him since he can remember. The white people have been teaching him to just cover things up by how the whites act to the blacks. If a white man does something bad to a black man the white man just covers it up a little and everything goes back to normal.
The narrator's insensitivity reveals itself early in the story when his wife's blind friend, Robert, comes for a visit after the death of his wife. Almost immediately in the beginning of the story the narrator admits "A blind man in my house was not something I looked forward to." [Carver 2368] He even goes so far as to suggest to his wife that he take the man bowling. He hears the story of Robert's dead wife and can not even imagine " what a pitiful life this woman must have led." [Carver 2370] The narrator is superficial, only recognizing the external part of people and not recognizing the value of a person on the inside.
This paper examines the drastic differences in literary themes and styles of Richard Wright and Zora Neale Hurston, two African--American writers from the early 1900's. The portrayals of African-American women by each author are contrasted based on specific examples from their two most prominent novels, Native Son by Wright, and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Hurston. With the intent to explain this divergence, the autobiographies of both authors (Black Boy and Dust Tracks on a Road) are also analyzed. Particular examples from the lives of each author are cited to demonstrate the contrasting lifestyles and experiences that created these disparities, drawing parallels between the authors’ lives and creative endeavors. It becomes apparent that Wright's traumatic experiences involving females and Hurston's identity as a strong, independent and successful Black artist contributed significantly to the ways in which they chose to depict African-American women and what goals they adhered to in reaching and touching a specific audience with the messages contained in their writing.

The opening scene of the novel introduces the theme of blindness. As the narrator says, “When they approach me they see only my surroundings, themselves, or figments of their imagination-indeed, everything and anything except me,” (Ellison 3). This quote shows how people do not see the narrator. The narrator says that people “refuse” to see him. An example of this is when he bumps into a white man at night. The narrator says, "…when it occurred to me that the man had not seen me, actually, that he, as far as he knew, was in the middle of a walking nightmare!” (Ellison 4). This quote is an example of how people are blind and do not see the narrator. The narrator realizes that the man had insulted him because he did not see him. Blindness is a recurring theme in the novel, and shows how people refuse to see the truth in their community. Another example of blindness in the beginning of the novel is the battle royal that the narrator is forced to take part in. All of the fighters are blindfolded, and therefore are blind to see how the white people are taking advantage of them. Blindness is shown as a negative theme in the novel.
In Native Son, Richard Wright introduces Bigger Thomas, a liar and a thief. Wright evokes sympathy for this man despite the fact that he commits two murders. Through the reactions of others to his actions and through his own reactions to what he has done, the author creates compassion in the reader towards Bigger to help convey the desperate state of Black Americans in the 1930’s.
The narrator’s prejudice makes him emotionally blind. His inability to see past Robert’s disability stops him from seeing the reality of any relationship or person in the story. And while he admits some things are simply beyond his understanding, he is unaware he is so completely blind to the reality of the world.
Blindness in Raymond Carver's Cathedral Blindness creates a world of obscurity only to be overcome with guidance from someone willing to become intimate with the blind. Equally true, the perceptions of blindness can only be overcome when the blind allow intimacy with the sighted. Raymond Carver, with his short story Cathedral, illustrates this point through the eyes of a man who will be spending an evening with a blind man, Robert, for the first time. Not only does this man not know Robert, but his being blind, "bothered" (Carver 98) him.
On the other hand, James Joyce, in his story Araby, expresses the idea of blindness in a different way. Instead, he uses light and dark to pinpoint shadows, gloomy lives and naive thoughts. The husband in Raymond Carvers “Cathedral” wasn’t enthusiastic about his wife’s old friend, whom was a blind man coming over to spend the night with them. His wife had kept in touch with the blind man since she worked for him in Seattle years ago. He didn’t know the blind man; he only heard tapes and stories about him. The man being blind bothered him, “My idea of blindness came from the movies. In the movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed. Sometimes they were led by seeing-eye dogs. A blind man in my house was not something I looked forward to. (Carver 137)” The husband doesn’t suspect his ideas of blind people to be anything else. The husband is already judging what the blind man will be like without even getting to actually know him. It seems he has judged too soon as his ideas of the blind man change and he gets a better understanding of not only the blind man, but his self as well.
Many people view blindness as a disability, but could these people be blind to their surroundings? Even though the narrator can perfectly see with his eyes, he lacks in understanding awareness. The narrator blindness isn 't physical, like many vision impaired people. His blindness is psychological, and his blindness causes him to become jealous. His blindness blocks his perception of viewing the world in a different way. This only causes him to see the physical attributes of humans, and thus shut off his mindfulness of viewing human personalities. As a result of a closed mind, the narrator doesn 't understand how Robert was able to live with the fact that he was never able to see his wife in the flesh, but the narrator fails to see that Robert vision of his wife was intimate. On the other hand, Robert blindness is physical. This causes Robert to experience the world in a unique manner. Without Robert eyesight, he is able to have a glimpse of a human personality. He uses his disability to paint pictures in his head to experience the world. By putting his psychological blindness aside, the narrator is able to bond with Robert, and he grasps the understanding of opening his eyes for the first time, and this forms a new beginning of a
The narrator declares that he “did not become alive until [he] discovered [his] invisibility,” (Ellison, 7). The audience is taken back to a time when the narrator lived in ignorance, before he had accepted that invisibility was not an element of fantasy but a fact of his reality. In another moment of violence, the narrator is forced into darkness with a blindfold and the audience truly sees the hardships of exiting without awareness of the dual condition of African Americans. The narrator was invited to give a speech to the affluent white men of the town. But his speech was eclipsed by a battle royal, a violent event in which curses and slurs were hurled in his direction. Pain and suffering were forced upon him by the white patriarchs in the room and yet the boy was still concerned with the “dignity” of his speech and even after he was knocked unconscious the narrator wondered if he “would be allowed to speak,” (Ellison, 26). Even after being brutally beaten and slandered he still felt compelled to impress those who could not fully see him. He still felt as if his worth was determined by the white man’s praise. In the novel The Invisible Man, Ralph Ellison develops his theme of being blinded by ideologies through the portrayal of Mr. Norton, an incredibly wealthy white man who is a founder and trustee of the Narrator’s college. Mr. Norton, as described by the Narrator, is “a symbol of the Great Traditions” (Ellison 37) who feels it is his destiny to help improve conditions in the African-American community. “...I felt even as a young man that your people were somehow closely connected with my destiny.” (Ellison 41). In reality, Norton is an incredibly narcissistic man who uses his position as a trustee of the black college to hide his underlying racism. While those around him may see Norton as someone who cares very deeply about the African-American
