The great French leader Napoleon Bonaparte once said “Great ambition is the passion of a great character. Those endowed with it may perform very good or very bad acts. All depends on the principles which direct them”. This wise inclination stated by an 18th century revolutionist ties into the character of Macbeth in William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. Macbeth’s constant struggle for power through his evolving morals and principles is very apparent, and eventually becomes life threatening for himself. Shakespeare demonstrates throughout the play that a selfish and unhealthy ambition for power can lead to the development of skewed morals and principles.

Now that he has an appetite for power, he feels a need to do anything, whether it is morally correct or not, to maintain the power he has. Large amounts of skepticism has risen from the suspicious coronation from those he trusts most. Even his closest friend, Banquo, questions the situation, saying “[Macbeth] hast it now: King, Cawdor, Glamis, all, as the weird women promis’d, and I fear thou played’st most foully for’t ” (III.i.49). Unknowingly, Macbeth embraces the change, transforming in a ruthless tyrant with a taste for blood. His morals have changed exponentially since the beginning of the play, where he was scared to even think about committing an act of disloyalty to his king. Whereas now he goes as far as conspiring a murder against Banquo and his son Fleance, just because of a fear of his “...fruitless crown…” and “...barren sceptre…” to be “...wrench’d with an unlineal hand” (III.i.52). Eventually, the overconfidence reinforced by the prophecies presented by the three witches predicting his seemingly invincibility, leads to his morals even being further skewed. Macbeth’s aspiration for power blinds him to the ethical implications of his dreadful acts. The more that Shakespeare’s Macbeth represses his murderous feelings, the more he is haunted by them. By analyzing his hallucinations it is possible to trace his deteriorating mental state and the trajectory of his ultimate fall. Throughout the play Macbeth is never satisfied with himself. He feels the need to keep committing crime in order to keep what he wants most: his kingship. The harder Macbeth tries to change his fate the more he tends to run into his fate. His ambition and struggle for power was Macbeth’s tragic flaw in the play. Macbeth’s rise to the throne was brought about by the same external forces that ensure his downfall.
In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Macbeth’s morality changes throughout the course of the play. He goes from being reluctant to kill an innocent man, to paying mercenaries to kill his best friend, just because his children and descendants will be kings, according to the prophecies. Macbeth’s morality changes through influences, such as his wife’s pressuring, the witches’ prophecy, and the fact that his plan worked for so long.
William Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a play centred around opposing forces trying to gain power in the succession for the throne of Scotland. Macbeth, in the beginning, is known to be a noble and strong willed man, who is ready to fight for his country. The play's central character, Macbeth is not happy as a high-ranking thane - leading him to assassinate Duncan to become King, while unknowingly dooming himself. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth is described as being “valiant”. He is a skilled warrior, who is loyal to his king and his country. Almost single-handedly, he wins the war for Scotland. He defeats many of the enemy soldiers, including a traitor, all in the name of his king. But, when three witches encounter Macbeth and his friend Banquo, Macbeth’s ambition begins to grow. They tell Macbeth that he will be Thane of Cawdor and King. Soon after, Macbeth meets with King Duncan. He informs Macbeth that he is the new Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth is astonished, and from then on he is obsessed with being king. His ambition begins to become ruthless when Duncan proclaims that his son Malcolm is the Prince of Cumberland, and therefore, the heir to the throne: “The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step/On which I must fall down, or else o’erleap, /For in my way it lies. Stars, hide your fires;/Let not light see my black and deep desires:/The eye wink at the hand; yet let that be/Which the eye fears, when it is done, to see.” (I,iv,48-53) At this moment, Macbeth, realizing that they stand in the way of the witches’ prophecies, decides that both Duncan and Malcolm need to die for him to be king. As soon as Macbeth kills Duncan, he enters into a world of evil. Later in the play, Macbeth’s ambition becomes increasingly ruthless. He kills his best friend Banquo, and almost kills Banquo’s son, Fleance, because he believes they would stand in the way of his reign. The witches told Banquo “Thou shall get kings, though thou be none.” (I,iii,67) This means that Banquo himself would not be a king, but that his successors would be. Macbeth tries to prevent this by killing Banquo and his son Fleance.
