I was particularly interested in the evolutionary theory of motivation. This form of motivation states that genetic mutations can alter physical traits and behavioral traits. Physical traits like these mutations in behavior traits can help an organism to reproduce. This also allows the mutation to be passed on to the next generation. This is how we as individuals are motivated to engage in behavior s that increase our genetic fitness. We need to act in a way that will improve our reproductive success. This will cause social processes that will increase genetic fitness and ability to pass this on to our children. According to this theory those of us who are fit will survive and our population will evolve in a way that their traits will manifest

The three bases of Darwinian evolutionary thought state: all animals struggle for existence, inherited traits from parent organisms are passed to offspring, and natural selection provides an advantageous environment for adaptive genes to thrive and usurp the presence of less adaptive genes within the gene pool, in terms of expression (Shoemake). Evolutionary psychologists propose that this theory holds significant influence within the realm of mate selection in humans. Based on these Darwinian principles, successful mate behaviors led to the continued existence of humanity; historically, humans mate preference reflected the best suited pairings that would further the species evolutionarily. Another key component of the evolutionary model comes from the contribution of Robert L. Trivers, an American evolutionary biologist and sociobiologist: the parental investment theory. In short, Trivers’s theory states that individuals facing higher levels of involvement during child-rearing become highly selective when choosing a potential mate. Following Trivers’s research, females are choosier when it comes to mate selection because their minimum risk regarding parental investment is higher than that of male counterparts. Evolutionary theory is developed from Darwin’s argument that “suggests that a process of natural selection leads to the survival of the fittest and the development of traits that enable a species to adept to its environment. “ Many have taken this a step further by saying that our genetic inheritance determines not only our physical traits but also certain personality traits and social behaviors. Theories of Motivation What is the motivation for this? According to the text, motivation is defined as a set of factors that activate, direct, and maintain behavior, usually toward a certain goal. Motivation is the energy that makes us do things; this is a result of our individual needs being satisfied so that we have inspiration to complete the mission. These needs vary from person to person as everybody has their individual needs to motivate themselves.
Motive theory is one more way psychologists evaluate personality. The motive theory searches for reasons why people do what they do. It asks questions like what drives people. The underlying idea of the motive theory is that behavior reflects underlying needs. A need represents an unsatisfactory state of being. For instance, primary needs are biological, such as a need for air, water and food. After these basic needs are met, less important needs can be met such as friendship and even love. David McCelland and John Atkinson studied the need for achievement. The need for achievement is the desire to do things well and have pleasure in overcoming obstacles (Clark et al., 1956). The purpose of this academic piece is to critically discuss The Darwinist implication of the evolutionary psychological conception of human nature. Charles Darwin’s “natural selection” will be the main factor discussed as the theory of evolution was developed by him. Evolutionary psychology is the approach on human nature on the basis that human behavior is derived from biological factors and there are psychologists who claim that human behavior is not something one is born with but rather it is learned. According to Downes, S. M. (2010 fall edition) “Evolutionary psychology is one of the many biologically informed approaches to the study of human behavior”. This goes further to implicate that evolutionary psychology is virtually based on the claims of the human being a machine that can be programmed to do certain things and because it can be programmed it has systems in the body that allow such to happen for instance the nervous system which is the connection of the spinal cord and the brain and assists in voluntary and involuntary motor movements.
The author trusts that all humans have some level of motivation as long as they exist. In turn, there are several well-known classic approaches that consider motivation such as instinct, drive reduction, arousal, incentive, and humanistic approaches. It is beyond the scope of this paper to describe all in detail, but a brief synopsis of each follows: (1) Instinct approach theorists suggest that humans have many diverse instincts that are biologically determined and cause innate patterns of behaviors such as reproducing, territorial protection, curiosity, acquisition, and fight, flight or freeze to name a few (McDougall, 1908). (2) Drive-reduction theory proposes that individuals have needs that are essential for survival and this need cause a tension to act called a drive. These drives entail primary drives for physical needs such as water and food, and acquired drives realized through conditioning or experience such as the need for income or social acceptance; whereas, one must meet the need to reduce the drive to return to a state of homeostasis (Hull, 1943). (3) Theorists who support an Arousal approach believe that humans are motivated by stimulation and people develop an optimal level of stimulus tension; whereas, task performances may suffer if the level is too high such as severe test anxiety or even too low such as boredom

According to Greenberg (1999) motivation is defined "as a process of arousing, directing and maintaining behaviour towards a goal." Where directing' refers to the selection of a particular behaviour; and maintenance' refers to the inclination to behave with consistency in that manner until the desired outcome is met.
Motivation is to understand what causes behaviour, what starts the behaviour, why a person does something and why the behaviour stops and what are the forces that determine behaviour’s intensity. There are different types of motivation that influences us from day to day and they have different effects from a short term to long term. As human beings we are inspired in different ways to different motivations. There are two main different types of motivations: Intrinsic motivation and Extrinsic motivation. Employee compensation and reward systems have undergone a couple of paradigm shifts since inception. Reward systems were traditionally compensation based and focused on the individual or the position (Beam 1995). After a recession in the early 1980's, employers turned to performance based models in an attempt to save money while still rewarding top performers (Applebaum & Shapiro, 1992). Today, the most successful organizations are using a total reward model, a hybrid of the performance based model combined with strategic human resource management planning to create reward systems that both benefit the employee and help organizations realize their operational goals (Chen & Hsieh, 2006).
Survival of the fittest. This idea, also known as Darwinism, was theorized by scientist Charles Darwin to explain the evolution of animal species. In the late 1800s, however, the idea of Social Darwinism emerged and applied the same concepts of Darwinism but on humans not animals. As defined by the dictionary, Social Darwinism is a belief, popular in the late Victorian era throughout the world, which states that the strongest or toughest should survive and flourish in society, while the weak and unfit should be allowed to die (“Social” 1). Science fiction writer H.G. Wells lived when the ideas of Social Darwinism were at their peak. He was able to see firsthand what effects Social Darwinism had on the world, and he was by no means impressed. By examining the different critical lenses of The Time Machine, the reader can see how H.G. Wells warns how the adverse effects of Social Darwinism are endangering the future of humanity.

Motivation is the concept of stimulating or arousing a person to achieve a goal. Motivation has much to do with desire and ambition, and if they are absent, motivation is absent too (What is Motivation and How to Strengthen It, para. 1). Motivation theories are unique to each organization. Some organizations have come up with motivation theories such as setting work goals, job performance evaluations, and fair treatment policies within the work environment to keep employees motivated. The impact that individuals, groups and structures have on behavior within organizations is Organizational Behavior. Motivation is affected by organizational behaviors, which is why different organizations apply motivation theories to motivate employees.
