“Life every man holds dear; but the dear man holds honor far more precious dear than life.”- William Shakespeare. The Medal of Honor is not only an award given out to the men or women by the President. It is the uppermost award given to the members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguish themselves through "prominent heroism and intrepidity at the risk of his or her life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States." The Medal of Honor symbolizes heroism, bravery and self- sacrifice. Not many have received the Medal of Honor, all of the men and women deserve to have one. In total, 3,473 medals have been awarded to 3,454 different people. Nineteen men received a second award: 14 of these received two separate medals for two separate actions, and five received both the Navy and the Army Medals of Honor for the same action according to Wikipedia.

So, what does it mean to be deserving of the Medal of Honor? Well, simple someone who sacrifices their lives for others; someone who is courageous and shows bravery, someone who is hard working and cares about the lives of strangers. The men who fight for our lives every day to insure that we have the freedom that we know we deserve. “Among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as well as property.” As many of us sit in school or speak what is on our mind all have to be thankful for the very reason we are able to do so, which is Men of Honor. I truly believe that every soldier is deserving of the Medal of Honor. They put their lives at stake, leave their families behind and they fight for what they believe in. I honestly can say that I tossed the words around myself, I knew the definitions of the words but I couldn’t quite grasp what exactly they meant but as I continued to read about all of the men and women who sacrificed their lives for us, not only did I know the definitions I could visualize what each and every word that this medal symbolizes. To serve, to sacrifice and to have responsibility are what each and every soldier represents.

“I will always place the mission first, I will never accept defeat, I will never quit and I will never leave a fallen comrade.” Every single solider live up to this saying and without hesitation each single one of them risks their lives every day for us. So, if you ask me what the definitions of heroism, Honor, patriotism, responsibility, and Sacrifice I would simply tell you the Medal of Honor recipients.
