With Every Drop Of Blood by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier is based on the Civil War. In this novel they talked about the white-black relationships during this time period. In the novel Johnny’s father went off to fight in the war, and was shot at Cedar Creek to be sent back home for a short amount of time before he passed due to his injuries. When Johnny’s father died Johnny promised him that he would not run off to fight, that he would stay and help his mother with the farm, the house, and Johnny’s little brother Sam and his little sister Sarah. Before Johnny’s father passed Johnny asked him what the reason for the war was, and his father told him it was for ‘states rights’. Not long after Johnny’s father passed, Johnny traveled down to Stanardsville to deliver cider to a local store there. Jeb, a teamster from Stanardsville, told Johnny about a wagon train planning to bring food into Richmond.“The pay will be mighty good ‘cause there’s a risk to it.” Jeb told Johnny (page 44, paragraph 4) Johnny was immediately interested because most Confederate or Rebel families didn’t have much to get by with during the Civil War due to the lack of crops and …show more content…
money because of the war and the Union Cavalry rummaging through the Confederate countryside taking anything and everything they needed or wanted, so it was a good opportunity to provide for his mother and the little ones in Johnny’s eyes. Once Jeb told Johnny that Mosby’s were coming along on the wagon train Johnny was sure he could persuade his mother to let him go then. Mosby Rangers were famous during the Civil War, around Virginia. Colonel Mosby had a group that would fight on their own in Virginia, they lived off the land racing into Union camps and taking whatever was laying around loose and shoot the camp up before the Union Army knew it. All of the teamsters thought the wagon train would be safe if they had Mosby’s. Johnny saw this as a chance to get even with the Union for what happened to his father, but his conscience was rough on him since he promised his father that he wouldn't run off and fight. Jeb told him how they weren’t aiming to fight but to just deliver the supplies to Richmond for the Confederate Army. Johnny knew there was a chance fighting could occur (it is a war after all) but he couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that the money would be good for his family. Johnny left a week later. The wagon road went through the Blue Ridge Mountains and by Swift Run Gap and up and over hills. Johnny wasn’t worried because he had his great grampa’s sword on his side. His hope of the sword soon ran out when some of the teamsters that had joined the wagon train laughed at him saying that a sword wouldn’t do no good against a Yankee soldier who had a bayonet rifle, that he would get shot before he could even stick them with it. When night fall arrived that evening the teamsters sat around fires and talked before resting. They were having a conversation about how Jeb did or didn’t know the months or how he knew them but didn’t know the exact order. Johnny soon chipped in and said each month in the exact order they were in, and that was an example I felt like showed just how little people during the Civil War had proper education. While they were sitting around the fires, they were talking about the reasoning for the war. Johnny continued saying ‘states rights’ from what his father told him. But the other teamsters had multiple different reasonings themselves on what the war was truly about. States rights, blacks having the same rights as whites, and how if God wanted them to be treated the same he wouldn’t have made them black and so on and so on. All throughout the story this question is brought up about what the true meaning or reasoning of the Civil War was. During the wagon train the Mosby’s didn’t due to well at their job and a lot of the teamsters were wounded, killed, or captured by black soldiers of the Union Army which were escaped slaves from the South.
Johnny was one of the teamsters who happened to have got caught and was taken by a black soldier named Cush. Johnny and Cush didn’t become friends right off of course due to the white-black conflict or relationship during the Civil War. But, later on Cush makes a deal with Johnny that if Johnny helps him learn to read he would spare him meals while he was captured rather than to let Johnny starve. Johnny was shocked by this offer and immediately curious as to why a black would want to learn to read. “I sure ain’t gonna spend the rest of my life plowing, planting, and picking for somebody else’s
table.” Johnny agreed to teach Cush but not the right way. He told him ‘equal’ was pronounced ‘eagle’ and ‘forefathers brought’ ‘forth fighters broke’ and ‘conceived in libraries’ ‘conceived in liberty’. Johnny took his parents word that no black man should be equal to a white man. City Point was the final destination for Cush and Johnny and Johnny would be sent off to a prison camp for Confederates up North. When Johnny and Cush arrived they had become good friends since Johnny got captured even though Johnny tried to make several escape attempts to make it back home to provide for his family he never could make it. City Point was the capital of the Union Camp and where the shipments of prisoners were based during the Civil War. Petersburg was set along the Appomattox River. Petersburg was an important place in Virginia. “Petersburg had a lot of factories that were making war supplies and had a lot of railroad lines going in and out.” (page 86, paragraph 2) The Appomattox River ran into the James River then on out into the sea. During the Civil War “half of the transportation routes from the South up to Richmond ran through Petersburg.” (page 86, paragraph 2) It was said that if the Union Army took over Petersburg, Richmond wouldn’t hold out for long. Johnny’s wagon got hit by a Confederate shell and Cush and Johnny both had scratches and cuts but other than the gash on Cush’s leg and the bleeding from Cush’s head they both came out alive and with all of their limbs still able to walk. Before the Confederate shell hit them Johnny was taking in the sight of the battle field from the seat of the wagon. “Now I could see beyond the breastworks. The hill fell away, the ground dropping off into a shallow valley. Then it rose up, and on top of the next hill, not a hundred yards away, was the Confederate breastworks. And in between, lying on both slopes of the hill, and down in the valley as well, were bodies.” (page 166, paragraph 4) This shows just how dangerous the wagon train was during the Civil War for the Union and the Confederates just trying to get supplies to their own Army. And just how many different opinions there were about the black-white relationship during the Civil War and it’s reasonings.
One of the ironies of Steinbeck’s novel, The Grapes of Wrath was that, as Ma Joad said, "If your in trouble or hurt or need -- go to poor people. They're the only ones that'll help -- the only ones."(pg 335) The irony is that if you need something you have to go to the people who have nothing.
In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. For example, when Mother Maria asks Homer to build a chapel, Homer speaks his mind by telling her he does not want to build it. Mother Maria shows her straightforward behavior during Homer’s stay at the convent. One morning, when Homer sleeps in late, Mother to becomes extremely upset and is not afraid to show how she feels about him. Secondly, both Homer and Mother Maria display a hardworking spirit. Homer is a hardworking man because after finally agreeing to build the chapel,

“When he ran to the door he saw the barn enveloped in flames”-(Hunt, 106). Why the barn was enveloped in flames was because the citizens decided to take matter in their own hands and punish the Creighton family because of what bill did which was join the south. All this happened al because bill decided to join the southern army. The Creighton family was most affected by this betrayal because they got punished because it was their son and brother. This time was very rough on the Creighton family. They suffered through the consequences of bills decisions. If Bill didn’t decide to join the south they might have not have suffered through what had happened. The Creighton’s could have just lost all their animals but luckily they were in the field. But their hay still burned in the great fire. It’s not the Creighton’s fault that Bill decided to join the south the citizens did not have to take all their anger on
In the novel, The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck brings to the reader a variety of diverse and greatly significant characters. However, the majority of each characters' individuality happens to lie within what they symbolize in the microcosm of the Joad family and their acquaintances, which itself stands for the entire migrant population of the Great Depression era. One such character is that of Jim Casey, a former preacher and long-time friend of the Joads. In this story, Casey represents a latter-day Christ figure who longs to bring religious stability to the burgeon of migrant families facing West.
In James McPherson’s novel, What They Fought For, a variety of Civil War soldier documents are examined to show the diverse personal beliefs and motives for being involved in the war. McPherson’s sample, “is biased toward genuine fighting soldiers” (McPherson, 17) meaning he discusses what the ordinary soldier fought for. The Confederacy was often viewed as the favorable side because their life style relied on the war; Confederates surrounded their lives with practices like slavery and agriculture, and these practices were at stake during the war. On the other hand, Northerners fought to keep the country together. Although the Civil War was brutal, McPherson presents his research to show the dedication and patriotism of the soldiers that fought and died for a cause.
In O’Brien’s story “The Things They Carried”, Jimmy Cross thinks the death of his comrades, Ted Lavender is his fault but it’s not. Jimmy Cross was only 22 year old too young to be First Lieutenant. Jimmy Cross’s obsession with Martha reading and a daydreaming about her letters. In which Jimmy Cross’s mind could escape from the ugliness of the war. In Vietnam War, being a strong leader over the troop is impossible the war’s mission are undefined. Ted Lavender’s death was a great tragedy of the Vietnam War, and not the fault of Jimmy Cross.

Steinbeck strikes at the fear in every man’s soul, with his portrayal of the poverty stricken life of the Joads as they travel from one stage of abandonment and what would seem like a helpless state to a journey of enduring perseverance. The Joads, Steinbeck’s creation in the Novel Grapes of Wrath is a large close-knit family living in Oklahoma during the “Dust Bowl” era. Steinbeck documents their journey beginning with their homelessness due to the crop failures to them surviving in a box car at the end of their journey. I think Steinbeck’ intention is to illustrate to the reader that being poor doesn’t always equate with being helpless. The Joads demonstrate this by their resilience to overcome homelessness, death, and prejudice.
More confederates than unions were illiterate due to the fact that most held professional or white-collard jobs (36). To make the Union soldiers sample fair sense most blacks couldn’t read or write, 2 who could were included in the sample (36). The levels of patriotism differed from the upper and lower south given to the fact that the upper south were mainly cotton states. The confederates felt as if it was a “rich mans woar but the poor man has to do the fifting” (16). The confederates were mainly fighting for “independence, property and way of life” (27). Some characteristics the soldiers had in common were McPherson’s calculations for the Union. He came to seeing that out of 562 Union soldier’s letters read only 67 percent voice strong patriotic motives. This is the same as the two-thirds of Confederates. As a result from reading McPherson’s book, research showed that the Union and Confederate soldiers expressed about the same degree of patriotic and ideological convictions. Even though they both had different reasons for fighting the levels of sincerity and dedication in their notes were
Soon after arriving in Chicago, they come across Durham’s, a meatpacking factory located in the slums of Chicago. Many of the family members have begun holding jobs at Durham’s, ranging from painting cans, to cleaning meat. Over time, however, Jurgis and his family begin to notice that cleanliness, as well as the workers’ overall health, is often, if not always, overlooked. This, as well as the acts of crooked business leaders, begins to corrupt the family and soon leads them into turmoil. The United States, possibly more than any other country, was not very welcoming during the early 1900s.
The American Civil War is perhaps the most important event in U.S. history since the American Revolution. Over half a million men would perish between the Union and Confederate Armies. It is important to know that Ulysses S. Grant was an important figure (perhaps the most important behind Abraham Lincoln) in the war. Many will see him as the hero of the American Civil War. Nevertheless there were others who would play an important role to help the Union win the Civil War. The implementation of black soldiers was crucial to the Union in order to achieve victory against the Confederate Army. Yet, the contributions and accomplishments of black soldiers during the Civil War were overlooked for nearly a century following the Civil War. However, within the last 30 years, many scholars and historians have begun to publish books on the history of black soldiers and their contributions to the Civil War. During the Civil War, free blacks were permitted to serve in the Union Army. But it was not until 1863, that black soldiers would see combat and charge against the confederate armies. It is estimated that around 186,000 African American served the Union Army throughout the war, with the creation of 163 colored regiments. My research paper will focus on the Black regiments of the American Civil War and their importance to U.S. history. Some of the important issues that will be discussed in this paper will include the struggles of black soldiers during the Civil War, from their wage earnings (where most made less money than white soldiers); the clothes they wore (most had no uniforms at all). Also, many of these soldiers had trouble getting the basic necessities like shoes, socks and soap. Other areas I will discuss will be the discriminatio...
In the Child Labor in the Carolinas, photos and depictions of children working in mills show how working class children did not have the opportunities to branch out and have a childhood as defined by today’s standards. Though the pamphlet creators may have been fighting for better standards for child labor in textile mills of the Carolinas, they simultaneously show how working class families depended on multiple members to support the family: in “Chester, South Carolina, an overseer told me frankly that manufacturers [in] all the South evaded the child labor law by letting youngsters who are under age help older brothers and sisters” (McElway, 11). Children were used because they were inexpensive labor and were taken advantage of in many ways because they were so...

This provides concrete evidence of Nick’s honesty. If he is able to see hypocrisy within his own family, there is no doubt that he is a forthright gentleman. Nick g...
