Evelyn Glennie is a hard of hearing percussionist, despite of being hard of hearing she surprised the group of individuals with her music aptitudes. She has got some truly wonderful music aptitudes by which she reveals how to tune in. It is really funny to imagine a hard of hearing percussionist revealing about how to listen anyway I feel no one best knows how to listen over Evelyn Glennie. At first she clears up by playing the drum through various positions and points to make us hear the different sounds that comes from the drum by different styles and edges used. Clara Schumann was a concert pianist born to Frederick Wieck and Marianne Tromlitz in Leipzig, Germany on September 13, 1819 (Comminfo). Clara was the second of five children and the daughter of a prominent music teacher and piano proprietor (Friedrich Wieck) and an opera soprano singer (Marianne Tromlitz). She died in 1896, renowned as a classical pianist and composer in the nineteenth-century Romantic style. During her height of popularity, the press deemed Clara as the “Queen of the Piano” (Schumann, Clara [Josehpine], The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Music).

In his essay “How We Listen,” Aaron Copland classifies and divides the listening process into three parts: “the sensuous place, the expressive plane, and the sheerly musical plane” (1074). I believe by this mechanical separation, Copland succeeds in discussing difficult topic, so natural that most people tend to by pass it. He uses analogy and sometimes stresses on certain situation where these planes are abused or become a cause of a problem. The main purpose for Copland to separate the listening process is for the reader to learn and study how they listen. Copland’s success in the clarification mainly because of two methods: (1) Categorizing the listening process in different parts and use an analogy to unite it to bring back the general idea of the listening process and (2) by answering and addressing to problems so the readers will understand and have a different view of the text.
The brilliant composer Clara Schumann was born as Clara Josephine Wieck on 13 September 1819. Even before her birth, her destiny was to become a famous musician. Her father, Friedrich Wieck, was a piano teacher and music dealer, while her mother, Marianne Wieck, was a soprano and a concert pianist and her family was very musically gifted. Her father, Friedrich, wanted to prove to the world that his teaching methods could produce a famous pianist, so he decided, before Clara’s birth, that she would become that pianist. Clara’s father’s wish came true, as his daughter ended up becoming a child prodigy and one of the most famous female composers of her time.
Geoff Emerick is a world famous audio recording technician. Emerick is most known for his work with The Beatles. Emerick was born and raised in 1946 in London. He started off as an second sound engineer. He got the job when he was only 15. He really got his start when he recorded The Beatles and they blew up, so did he.
As a professional in today’s society, it is greatly important to be able to communicate effectively with other professionals, with clients, and with those that are encountered in daily living. In order to communicate in a proper manner, not only is talking and non-verbal communication, but a large aspect is the ability to listen. Listening is a vital task in order to build a relationship and find meaning in someone else’s words. In order to find this meaning one must follow the characteristics of active listening, face the challenges to listening, and reflect upon one’s own listening skills.
Those not thoroughly educated in communication tend to confuse the terms “hearing” and “listening.” Although they appear to mean the same thing, utilize the same body part, and are both required for functional communication, there is a great difference between these two actions. Hearing involves the perception of sound using the ears, while listening is based upon giving attention to the sound being perceived. Additionally, because these concepts are different, there are also several different ways of improving hearing and listening. Thus, there are several differences between these two concepts, and it is important to signify these differences in order to practice effective communication.
“Hearing is the sensory ability to receive sound” (Walker, R., 2015) and requires no effort while listening is a complex cognitive, affective, and behavioral process (Edwards, R., 2011). Thompson, Leintz, Nevers, and Witkowski define effective listening as the “dynamic, interactive process of integrating appropriate listening attitudes, knowledge, and behaviours to achieve the selected goals of a listening event” (Thompson, K., Leintz, P., Nevers, B. &Witkowski, S., 2004). Effective listening is more than just a cognitive practice, to be an effective listener one must “hear” what the listener is saying but also comprehend the message being conveyed. This can be achieved by practicing three frames of listening. Cognitive listening centers on how words and phrases are “comprehended, understood, interpreted, evaluated, remembered, and recalled” (Burleson, B.R., 2011). Affective listening is the focus of attention, and displays of acceptance and empathy toward the speaker. Behavioral listening characteristics show engagement through non-verbal cues like eye contact and nodding, along with verbal cues like inquiries or advice. Effective listening should not be taken for granted; there are several advantages to understanding and practicing effective listening. When you become a better listener you build stronger interpersonal relationships, you are perceived as having greater intelligence, and improved listening skill establish stronger overall communication skills. The first phase in the listening process is attending. Attending is willfully striving to perceive selected sounds. The most important factor of attending is preparing to be physically and mentally ready to pay attention. We should focus mainly on attending to the message rather than encountering inner thoughts and feelings. In my day-to-day life, I try to get ready to attend even though it could be difficult at times. For instance, the other day when I was home, I had an argument with my mother and I started back talking her. But I realized that I should look directly at her and situate myself correctly. After she finished speaking, I understood what she had meant and that was when I saw an improvement in myself because it made it look like I was interested in what she was saying.
