One out of every three Jew was killed, leaving only three million Jews left out of the nine million that existed. The cause of this huge genocide, was a critical part of history called the Holocaust. Eva is the daughter of Israel Voge and Ita Prince. Her mother was eighteen and her father was thirty-four when they got married. Her parents were matched together because her father was rich and he was able to provide for Ita and her family. Eva’s father, Israel Voge had a business of distributing religious articles,which was a job the majority of older Jews had. Itla, Eva’s mother was an unemployed mother of eight, Eva being the oldest and surprisingly the most educated. This was surprising because the government gave “[Jews] a basic education, and after that they had to pay” (Survivor Stories Eva Galler) and with seven other kids that was a big financial burden for Eva’s father. Furthermore,it was considered unimportant or unusual for a girl to have an education after the sixth grade. After Eva completed sixth grade her father did not think Eva should go to high school. She was very upset when her father told her that and then decided to go on a hunger strike. She did not eat and she locked herself in her room until Eva’s father agreed that she could go to High school. Eva was able to complete every year of High school except her last year of high school , which was when Hitler took over. As talked about in class, many schools had lessons that were directed to teaching children how awful the Jewish people were compared to Germans. One of the new laws was that Jews could not hire anyone that was not Jewish. This was difficult for Eva’s family because they ran a farm that employed people that were not of Jewish nationality.

Adolf Hitler was a German. He got arrested for doing ilegal things within the government of Germany. After Hitler was free from prison he went back to work in the government of Germany. Hitler slowly made his way through the German government. While worked his way to the top he created laws and changed things to make everything he was going to do legal. Once Hitler made it to the top he started to kill Jews and other undesirables. Hitler wanted all the Jews and all the other undesirables gone he wanted to make them suffer. The Holocaust could be best described as the widespread genocide of over eleven million Jews and other undesirables throughout Europe from 1933 to 1945. It all began when Adolf Hitler, Germany's newest leader, enforced the Nuremburg Race Laws. These laws discriminated against Jews and other undesirables and segregated them from the rest of the population. As things grew worse, Jews were forced to wear the Star of David on their clothing. The laws even stripped them of their citizenship.

There are multiple contributing factors to the Holocaust that made it so large in scope. Historians argue which of these factors were most significant. The most significant contributing factor is the source of the Holocaust, the reason it occurred. This source is Adolf Hitler and his hatred for Jewish people. In comparison to the choices of the Allies to not accept Jewish refugees and to not take direct military action to end the Holocaust, the most significant contributing factor of the Holocaust is that Adolf Hitler was able to easily rise to power with the support of the German people and rule Germany.

Eva Heyman was born February 13, 1931, Nagyvarad, Hungary. In 1933-1939, Eva’s parents Agnes (her mother) and Bela (her father) divorced. Eva was the only child. Her mother remarried and moved to Budapest. She rarely saw her father, who lived on the other side of the city. She lived with her grandparents on the border between Romania and Hungary near the pharmacy they owned. Nearly one-fifth of the city’s population was Jewish. The beginning of the Holocaust had little impact on their lives.
This is most obvious when she kills her own child. While the death of her son makes her appear like a careless mother to Hannah, Eva views it as an act of love. She notices the poor lifestyle that Plum is living and wanted to help him by ending it. She tells Hannah, “I had to keep him out so I just thought of a way he could die like a man not all scrunched up inside my womb, but like a man” (72). Eva wanted him to die with whatever dignity he had left. Hannah did not share the same view as her mother. She thought that her mother had no love in her. She once asks Eva if she ever loved her and Eva tells her, “What you talkin’ ‘bout did I love you girl I stayed alive for you can’t you get that through your thick head” (69). Hannah saw that Eva did not see an importance in motherhood and she took similar values. As a mother, Hannah is more focused on men than her daughter. She, “refused to live without the attentions of a man, and after Rekus’ death had a steady sequence of lovers, mostly the husbands of her friends and neighbors” (42).
