Kathryn Stockett reveals Eugenia Phelans character through many different aspects. Using her early life and how she was raised, her appearance, her old and new relationships and the culture in which she lives in. All these attributions help shape her into the independent, controversial character she is. Eugenia never accustomed to the culture of her time. She was always the odd one out. Unlike many of her friends, Eugenia never really fit into the social standards of beauty. She was almost six feet tall, lanky, with curly unmanageable hair. She received the nickname Skeeter from her older brother Carlton right after she was born. He took one look at her and said “It’s not a baby it’s a Skeeter!” (Stockett 57). to Constantine, Eugenia’s maid. Constantine was a member of the black community and had personal experience with people’s concerns with her looks. Constantine taught her many important lessons about life and society. She taught Skeeter to love herself no matter what others thought of her. She taught her that “Ugly live on the inside. Ugly be a hurtful, mean person…” (Stockett 62) This helped shape Eugenia into the independent character she is and further increased her drive to step out of the social standards that bound her. Her mother on the other hand was constantly worried over Skeeters appearance and whether or not she was going to find a man to settle down with. This was the opposite of Skeeters worries. She worked hard to graduate college and after that there was nothing stopping her from getting a job and pursuing writing. Skeeters relationships throughout the novel help mold and develop her. Her relationship with Constantine teaches her to look past racial prejudices and see people for their heart rather than their skin. Her relationship with Hilly Holbrook and Elizabeth Leefolt, two of her longtime friends, help her to question whether or not she wishes she could “…change things.” (Stockett10). This foreshadows the writing of her novel and accentuates her liberal character. As the book progresses Skeeter is given a job as a writer, answering questions about home maintenance for the Jackson Journal. Seeing that Skeeter was raised with maids, she doesn’t know the first thing about laundry, cleaning or cooking. For help, she goes to Aibileen, Elizabeth’s maid. During their time spent together they form a close relationship and Skeeters eyes are opened to the social injustices that surround the black community. 1960s Jackson, Mississippi was a home to segregation between black and white people. Through various interviews of Aibileen and Minny, Mrs. Hilly’s former maid, Skeeters gains new perspective on the racial discrimination. Going against traditional views on women and the black race, Skeeter decides to write a novel on the life of the colored maids. Skeeter is taken on a personal journey throughout this novel. Eugenie was the daughter of a Spanish noble, who fought on the French side in Napoleons Peninsular war in Spain. Eugenie married Emperor Napoleon the III in January of 1853 and become the last Empress of the French. Empress Eugenie was a gorgeous woman who was number one in French society in 1870.
Point of view is one of the single greatest assets an author can use. It helps to move the plot along and show what is happening from a character’s perspective. An author can make the plot more complex by introducing several characters that the reader has to view events through. The events can then be seen through different eyes and mindsets forcing the reader to view the character in a different light. From one perspective a character can seem cruel, yet, from another, the same character can seem like a hero. These vastly contrasting views can be influenced based on the point of view, a character’s background, and the emotions towards them. The heroine, Mrs. P, has some carries some characteristics parallel to Louise Mallard in “Hour.” The women of her time are limited by cultural convention. Yet, Mrs. P, (like Louise) begins to experience a new freedom of imagination, a zest for life , in the immediate absence of her husband. She realizes, through interior monologues, that she has been held back, that her station in life cannot and will not afford her the kind of freedom to explore freely and openly the emotions that are as much a part of her as they are not a part of Leonce. The loss of innocence which Claudia faces unintentionally is vital to the role she plays in society and in her life. Her thoughts hold a more realistic view of life and human behavior. She sees the pains and sorrows that life truly is constructed of. Claudia feels that she has missed out on so many opportunities and is not included the way others are. Her strong character generates a feeling of both isolation and separation, but, in reality, she tastes life more closely than most people are able to in a lifetime. Although Claudia's passion to be included is unrequited, she is filled with the strength, character, and pain that make her a more knowledgeable and resilient person.
There is no doubt that Claude McKay drew upon canonical influences when constructing his character Bita. He proves that despite race women like Bita, Jane Eyre and Portia may lead different lives, live in different times, but can be driven by the same passions and live by the same philosophy. He drew upon timeless works which were widely read because we can relate to the human nature, condition and the colourful characters expressed in them.
In the book each character had their own characteristics and personality. There was something special about each character in the book. Each of them had their strong points and weak points for example Grant was always running away from his problems. There were a lot of things in his life that he could not handle and he just wanted to run away. He didn’t know what to do about Jefferson at first and wondered why he had to teach him. He didn’t really know how to handle his job as teacher in the Quarter. He couldn’t make his mind up about God so he just decided to leave it alone. Aunt Emma was a very strong character in the book. She would do almost anything to help Jefferson before he died. She begged to the Guidry’s on several occasion to help Jefferson feel more comfortable while he was in jail. She begged Grant for his help even though Grant did not want to help Jefferson. She got Mose Ambrose and Grant to finally work together to help Jefferson instead of always arguing.
The character, which includes the physiological and psychological makeup of each person in the play, properly incorporated the greed and oppression of the time. Ben and Oscar are brothers who are possessive, scheming, and greedy individuals. These two characters make the play very interesting. Both brothers’ physiological makeup fit the play perfectly. This is because Ben tires to look like a nice guy on the outside but has only one motive that drives his character. This motive is money. He will do anything to get his cotton mill deal to go through. Then there is Oscar. He is also a lot like Ben, but on the surface not as nice. Because of these two characters, the rest of the characters feed of their hatred and ulterior motives. Another character is Leo who is a weak unprincipled son of Oscar and Birdie. This character is not emotionally strong compared to Ben or Oscar, but still has a very well written part. Birdie is then obviously Oscar’s wife. Birdie has one of the most complex characters in the whole play. Her psychological make up is very complex. Her character has very quick mood changes and subsequently does not seem like she has much power in the physiological makeup of the whole group. Next, there is Regina, who is married to Horace and a sister of Oscar and Ben. She undoubtedly has the most devious psychological makeup of all the other characters put together. She has a very cold heart towards her husband. This was the most thoroughly created character in the whole play although it was also the most troubled character. Every line that she said was written for a specific purpose and was usually only to help herself. Married to Regina is Horace. Horace’s character was a very weak and sick old man. She always getting into a fight with her mother all the time about her beauty, because she has a habit of looking at herself in the mirror wherever she found one, “…she had a quick, nervous giggling habit of craning her neck to glance into the mirror or checking other people’s faces to make sure her own was alright.” (126). Moreover, her mother always compares her with her sister, June, which makes she feel even more hatred toward her mother, “Why don’t you clean your room like your sister? How’ve you got your hair fixed – what the hell stinks? Hair spray? You don’t see your sister using that junk.” (126). Her mother, whenever she gossips on the phone with her aunties. They always admire June over her, “June did this, June did that, she saved money and helped clean the house and cooked, and Connie couldn’t do a thing, her minded was all filled with trashy daydreams.” (126). To them, June is always the best, because she is good at almost everything and Connie cannot do anything right. Therefore, when Connie’s mother says something or complaint about her beauty, she rolls her eyeballs and wishes that her mother was
The drama is basically about a married couple -Stella and Stanley Kowalski- who are visited by Stella's older sister, Blanche. The drama shows the caustic feelings of these people putting Blance DuBois in the center. The drama tells the story of the pathetic mental and emotional demise of a determined, yet fragile, repressed and delicate Southern lady born to a once-wealthy family of Mississippi planters.3 No doubt that the character of Blanche is the most complex one in the drama. In Daisy Miller, Henry James slowly reveals the nature of Daisy"s character through her interactions with other characters, especially Winterbourne, the main character." The author uses third person narration; however, Winterbourne"s thoughts and point of view dominate." Thus, the audience knows no more about Daisy than Winterbourne." This technique helps maintain the ambiguity of Daisy"s character and draws the audience into the story.
Authors develop characters’ personalities in order to add depth to their story and allow readers to feel more connected to the characters. Beyond this, characterization also allows authors to develop the themes of their stories in a more clear manner. A prime example of this would be in the poem Judith, where the author contrasts Judith and Holofernes’ personalities in order to develop the major themes of heroism and having faith in God.
The Help describes white women to have a typical image by appearance and role. Aibileen describes Skeeter as "She wearing a white lace blouse buttoned up like a nun, flat shoes so I reckon she don’t look any taller. Her blue skirt gaps open in the waist. Miss Skeeter always looks like somebody else told her what to wear." (Stockett 4). This image is not typical for the American woman. Skeeter is not like the women in her town, so she looks funny from her hair to her feet. Unlike women of her age who wear their hair in puffs and bobs, Skeeter isn 't concerned about her frizzy hair. She dresses in ordinary clothes while the other women are fashionable and dressed in modern pleated and matched blouses, skirts and shoes. When Skeeter is not wearing common clothes people also get shocked, "And there Miss Skeeter in a red dress and red shoes, setting on my front steps like a bullhorn," her dress is too brightly colored for others (118).
