Unlike Shayne, Jessica, and Joseph, Peter and Alan’s story with the criminal system was different. Peter and Alan had little in common besides having mental illness and dying at the hands of untrained cops. Peter was born within a very abusive family, and he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Pfeiffer describes Peter as “slow and simple, and his childhood was as tumultuous”(131). Whereas Alan was bright enough to get into University of Tampa which was interrupted because of his mental deterioration. Overtime, Alan’s behavior changed to be intense and aggressive. After being hospitalized, his mother took care of him up until her death, it was then that things intensive for him. Alan was large sized and he hated cops. One day, due to assumption of a female officer, Alan was shot and killed. According to the officer “crazy people are unpredictable” (127). Likewise, with time Peter’s behavior also changed especially with his mother. Peter had taken violent actions towards his mother. The criminal system was them involved and from that point on he was no longer looked at as a mentally ill 205-pound individual, yet as a criminal, who refused arrest, and his action “determined how they treated him” (120). Just like Alan he was killed during an arrest, he was suffocated by the cops. “When the Negro Was in Vogue from The Big Sea” by Langston Hughes was mainly about an ironic situation in which white, despite repressing the black community, “set up shop” in the majority black Harlem neighborhood. Also because the wealthy and influential were embracing the black culture, while outside of the Harlem neighborhood they oppressed them. One could conclude that the audience of this would be anyone unaware of the 1920’s and how some of the African Americans were treated. One could also conclude from the passage that the purpose of this was to give Langston’s perspective of how hypocritical America was at the time about racism. Whites felt that blacks were beneath them but wanted to go their clubs.
The Outsiders was written by S.E Hinton, and she broke the stereotype for female writers in the 1960s. In the novel The Outsiders, different characters make several choices that affect one another's lives.
The similarities in the lives of this father and son are uncanny. I will look at the murders committed by both Butch and Willie. They both committed two murders. I will look at the correlation between the two men and the murders they committed. I will touch on their lives and their treatment at home. In addition, how that eventually affected them and the eventual murders they both committed. Their mother has sent them both away. They were both sent to the same juvenile detention centers at different times. This affected both men differently. The psychologists gave them the same diagnosis at different times, but no one realized this at the time. It is astonishing that there was no connection made between the two men. There was bound to be tragedy in their lives given the history in this family. Butch and Willie both committed heinous crimes, but for different reasons. I will look at why I think they killed and what sentences I believe they should have gotten for killing.
Throughout this particular case the audience learns numerous details about how John 's personal life may have led him to be a killer. John was a part of a group at school known as the "freaks" who were constantly victims of the popular kids ' bullying and taunts. John was even mugged at the young age of only thirteen by some older classmates. John 's father 's response was highly negative and abusive, telling John repeatedly that he was ashamed of him and that he needed to toughen up and be a man, and bought his son illegal weapons and violent video games instead of helping his son confront his conflicts. Later in the case the jury is introduced to Leo Clayton a boy who has experienced numerous of the same traumatic events that John had been tormented with, except for the fact that Leo 's father actually listened to his sons silent cries for help and confronted Robert about John 's inappropriate behavior at school towards Leo. Inside out is a movie about a girl named Riley Anderson who is born with five emotions joy, sadness, fear, disgust and anger. These emotions are housed in Riley’s mind called headquarters. Each emotion plays a very big role in Riley’s life because they chose how she should feel during every second of the day since she was born. Guns do belong in schools and prospective parents should be required to obtain a license before having kids. These are the dominant themes present in Jamie O'Meara's "Gun, Sex, and Education" and Janice Turner's "Should We Need a License to Be a Parent?" respectively. O'Meara argues that just like sex education arms the youth with knowledge, protecting them from irresponsible promiscuous behavior, gun education would serve the same purpose with respect to violence and guns. Similarly, Turner calls for new legislation but in an entirely different arena. She believes that in order to become parents, adults or non-adults for that matter, should meet a certain required standard and obtain a license in order to enter the most important profession of all: parenting. In order to develop these arguments, both writers utilize the general rhetorical strategies of comparison and argument. However, there is one key difference between the approaches taken to the development of the arguments. O'Meara's article has successfully employs ethical (ethos), emotional (pathos) and logical (logos) appeal whereas Turner's article takes a predominantly rational appeal (logos). Though both articles do an excellent job of conveying their points, all things considered, O'Meara's attempt at presenting a well balanced approach appealing to logic, emotion and ethics is more successful than Turner's attempt at presenting a solely logical argument.
One of the greatest conflicts in the history of the United State of America, the Revolutionary War, was started when the colonies of North America declared themselves independent from British rule. A group of men known as the Founding Fathers, which included George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John and Samuel Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and others, formed the Continental Congress to rule their new nation. They chose Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence, which they would send to King George III to make their independence official. Jefferson knew that he needed to use strong language to make a solid agrument against British rule in the colonies and to convince the colonists that independence was the only choice to maintain their freedom as human beings. The powerful use of parallelism, ethos, pathos, and logos helpd Thomas Jefferson to convey his idea that all men are created equal with unalienable rights and that it is the duty of the government to protect those rights.
Amy states, “I’ll do any or everything to get a baby” (77). Her eagerness leads her to seek solace in another man, Holland Winchester. This adulterous affair results in an ill-conceived child. Billy is not a trouble-making man until trouble finds him shortly after he discovers the affair between his wife and Holland. Billy asks Amy angrily, “Whose child is it?” (116) and he eagerly waits for Amy’s reply. Amy replies Billy, “It’s my child, Billy. But it can be ours if you want” (118). After hearing this, Billy truly doesn’t know what to do and he takes a promise from Amy that she will never be with Holland again. Thus, though Billy is angry at his wife at one moment, he doesn’t want to loose her wife, so he compromises the situation. Moreover, Billy also tries to understand Amy’s situation and remembers how Amy chose him to be her husband regardless of his abnormal leg. Here’s the scenario. Two brothers, close in bond, get into a serious fight. A fight so serious it may split them for good. This exact thing occurred between Pete and Sucker in the book Sucker by Carson McCullers. Pete and Sucker had a relatively friendly relationship, so much so that they considered the other one a brother, but tension caused Pete to lash out at Sucker. However, Pete, Sucker’s older adoptive brother, wanted to “straighten it out”, or fix things, with Sucker for several reasons.
Emotions for both boys drove thoughts of anger, resentment and hatred. Kip ultimately took his shooting to a different and more personal level when he killed his parents, Michael however did not. This may lead one to believe the internal driving forces behind Kip’s actions was really rooted at home, and not school. Both boys acquired stolen guns, which they received from a classmate.
