Ethiopian Civil War The Cause “Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph.” was said by one of the many leaders of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie. With this quote, Haile wanted to show that if a problem is not acted upon, it cannot be fixed. In the end, action was what brought Haile’s rule over Ethiopia to an end. The people of Eritrea wanted freedom from Ethiopia in 1861. Ethiopia would not let Eritrea leave and become its own country. Ethiopia wanted to remain whole and keep their laws over the people of Eritrea. The Dergue, a military division, overthrew …show more content…
Haile Selassie (see picture) was emperor for 44 years until the Dergue took control over Ethiopia. Mengistu Haile Mariam, the leader of the Dergue, became Chairman for Haile Selassie in his plan to overthrow him. Mengistu had ministers loyal to Haile Selassie replaced by members of the Dergue. Mengistu slowly eliminated all of Haile’s support in the government and replaced them all with people from the Dergue. Haile had no clue of anything going on that could pose a threat to him and his position in the government. When Haile was clueless Mengistu arrested him and drove him off to a prison in a blue Volkswagen. In the prison Haile Selassie was strangled in his own bed and buried beneath a toilet inside of his palace most likely by a hitman hired by Mengistu. Mengistu took over control of the government and eliminated all of his political …show more content…
The Dergue and the Union wanted to remain one and keep their strength in numbers. The Confederates and Eritrea wanted independence because they did not believe in the governments ways of running the country. The American government and the Ethiopian government, both had more control over the country and they wanted to keep their citizens under one set of laws. All sides of the countries were ready to go to war over it and both of them did. In both of these civil wars people fought for what they believed in. The American government wanted to preserve the Union, but as the war went on, they wanted to free all the slaves and have more equal rights for colored people. Eritrea wanted independence from Ethiopia because the Ethiopian government held multiple mass executions, cold blooded murder, and genocidal acts. People should study these civil conflicts so that they don’t make the same mistakes that the people in these civil conflicts made. Civil wars matter most because people must always fight for what they believe in, especially when these beliefs are so strong they are willing to lay down their life so others can live the way they wanted
No one is one hundred percent sure why the American Civil War came to be. However, one theory that repeatedly comes up is the issue of slavery and whether it was just or wrong in America the land of the freedom throughout history and discussions. Charles B. Dew the author of, Apostles of Disunion: Southern Secession Commissioners and The Cause of The Civil War, claims to be a southerner himself and explains his thoughts and education growing up in the south. In his youth, he was taught by his family that the reason the South went to war was to fight for their State’s rights but as an adult he explains that it may not have been the only reason they fought after researching for himself.
The American Civil War was a major war in the United States between the Union and eleven Southern states which declared that they had a right to secession and formed the Confederate States of America. They were led by Jefferson Davis who was elected as their president. The Union, led by President Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party, opposed the expansion of slavery into territories owned by the United States and rejected any right of secession. The United States Civil War began as an effort to save the Union but it ended in a fight to abolish slavery. Tens of thousands of soldiers on each side, in battle after battle, had the courage to march in regular order against the withering fire of the defenders, while those around them fell with hideous and usually fatal wounds for many different reasons. Southerners fought for their rights and their way of life. Blacks for on another and for the end of slavery. Northerners fought to keep the Union together and latter on the end of slavery. Blacks fought for Religion, to demonstrate to all that blacks are just as capable as whites in battle and to show Gods righteousness.

The American Civil War was caused because of the North and South differences in economies, disagreements about abolishing slavery and whether the state or federal government had more power. These three factors played a key role in America's deadliest war. Understanding the causes of the Civil War is important because the war was one of the most important events in our nation's history. After the Civil War all men were truly created equal, it reunited the country as one, and redefined what it meant to be an
Southern and Northern People had different ideas about the civil war. There were problems within their country and they wanted to fix them. They knew the country was created for the people and was run by the people. They wanted the nation to succeed, but one side wanted it to be free for all people no matter the race, while the southern wanted to keep slaves. With these complete opposites ideas of thinking the southern states decided their only option was to separate from the Union. They split and this left the country confused. Confused about what was in store for the nation they had grown to love. It was no longer clear what they future held for American and it would take a couple of years to get the country moving down the path that leads to the world we live in today.
The South was fighting against a government that they thought was treating them unfairly. They believed the Federal Government was overtaxing them, with tariffs and property taxes making their lifestyles even more expensive than they already had been. The North was fighting the Civil War for two reasons, first to keep the Nation unified, and second to abolish slavery. Abraham Lincoln, the commander and chief of the Union or Northern forces, along with many other Northerners, believed that slavery was not only completely wrong, but it was a great humiliation to America. Once we can see that with these differences a conflict would surely occur, but not many had predicted that a full-blown war would breakout.
The Original goal in the Civil War was to keep the nation together it did that by putting the word United in United Sates again. There were also new amendments that were added to the constitution: the 13th 14th and the 15th. The Amendments granted equal rights to people of all color. This also helped resolve Federalism disputes between Kentucky and Virginia.
What started as a war to prevent the South from seceding quickly turned into a war against slavery following President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. At the start of the Civil War, both Union and Confederate sides believed that they would had a quick and decisive victory. The North’s population and industry was vastly greater than the South’s, but the South had superior military leadership, a large white population that was united against invading Union armies and a hope that France or Britain would intervene on their behalf.
The Secession of the United States was the cause of thr Civil War. The Southern Confederates were furious that the Northern Union for trying to abolish slavery. When Lincoln was elected president, he tried to once and for all abolish slavery in the North as well as the west. He tried to contain slavery to its geographical area to keep it from spreading anymore north, but the South erupted in rebellion and eventually went to war against the North in the Civil

... for one another. The North wanted to evolve into a better society while the south continued to hold on into an “antiquated” social order. As this comes along, this difference then turns into violence, which breaks out into an all out war. With all said and done, this is why the Civil War was inevitable.
The American Civil War fought from 1861 to 1865 is described as “the bloodiest conflict in the history of North America” (Feature Causes Of The Civil War). The Civil war or war between the states was fought for many economic, political and moral reasons tracing back to the very start of America. The civil war fought between the Northern and Southern states is truly a significant event in the history of the United States because it involved American citizens fighting against each other. The American civil war was initiated through the controversy over slave labor, unfair actions toward Southern states and the vast division between the Northern and Southern states.
No sudden occurrence, the American Civil War stemmed from decades of sectionalism within the United States, which had separated the industrialized North, home to a growing antislavery movement, from the agricultural, slavery-dependent South. The latter region used the United States Constitution to justify the maintenance of slavery; specifically, the South cited the Tenth Amendment, which gran...
Military force led by the United Nations eventually muzzled the rebellion and with United States and Belgium’s help, Mobutu gained power. His leadership has been shown through history to be not much better.
