As a child, our parents try to instil morals and values into our beliefs that will guide us in the right direction to become individuals who portray the qualities of integrity, loyalty, and humanity. As we grow into adults, these qualities become even more prevalent in our careers. Ethics in the workplace can affect morale, productivity, relationships, and cohesiveness. This paper will discuss how managers with high ethical values have a positive impact the workplace environment and their employees, the importance of an ethical climate, biases that can impact moral decision making, and an ethical dilemma that occur within my organization, how it should have been handled and the ethical principles that should have been taking into consideration.

Ethics determine, how individuals views one another, interacting and conduct themselves within an organization. Managers play a crucial role in determining an ethical climate. Without an ethical manager, an organization will most likely not be able to achieve an ethical climate. Employees need someone to guide them and constantly reinforce what is ethically and morally acceptable in a work environment. An ethical climate fosters an environment that nurtures confidence, productivity, building relationship and teamwork. Biases can play a major factor when dealing with moral decision making within the workplace. In order to avoid biases, individuals need to try and became aware of them. Ethical dilemmas have the ability to rip apart and organization but with the right managers and an ethical climate, they can be minimized. The Ins and Outs of Ethics is a Business Week Online magazine article from May 13, 2001, it was written by Eric Wahlgren. In the article he interviews Michael Rion, the author of The Responsible Manager. Rion is also a leading business ethics advisor who consults many Standard and Poor’s 500 companies. In the article Wahlgren asks Rion why it is important for businesses to have a high ethical standard. In his responses, Rion explains that effective organizations utilize ethics programs to clearly define ethical expectations, resolve ethical issues quickly, and to remove moral constraints. Additionally, employees who understand how to deal with ethical dilemmas will also be more productive and have strong core values to guide them. According to scripture, Rions concepts are biblically sound, relevant, and desirable, proving that ethical organizational behavior is shaped and influenced by sound ethical principles.

When it comes to business ethics in the workplace Washington Mutual has designed what can be considered a well balanced workplace with behaviors that are aligned with their moral values and business ethics. Business ethics are sometimes depicted as resolving conflicts where one option can appear to be the correct choice. There are many different ethical dilemmas that are faced by managers and leaders everyday that are highly complex and have no clear choice or guidelines to assist in making the choices for resolution. There are times when an employee has to decide whether or not to cheat, lie, steal, or break their contract. These ethical decisions are real-life situations where they are forced to make on a daily basis. Ethics is a branch of philosophy that deals with the moral principles and values that govern our behavior as human beings. It is important in the human experience that we are able to grasp the idea of our own ethical code in order to become the most sensible human beings. But in that process, can ethics be taught to us? Organizations are always being faced with ethical dilemmas and situations that affect their decision-making. For businesses to be successful, they need to be able to resolve ethical issues that may arise in the workplace. Resolving ethical issues within an organization takes time, communication, and implementation. Managers have to communicate to other employees what is expected of them of how they should react in an ethical situation. When managers make decisions regarding ethical behavior they cannot simply make a decision and leave it alone. Managers need to be the leading force behind implementing such decisions. To ensure ethical decision making in an organisation, one must first accept how individuals settle on ethical decisions in an organisational environment. It is often expected that individuals in organisations settle on ethical decisions in the same way that they settle on ethical decisions at home and in their personal lives. The success of an organization to a larger extent depends upon the ability of its management to take good and effective decisions (Kinicki 2008, 249-50).
