I believe that personal ethics should and will change over the span of a lifetime. In the beginning of your life, you must be selfish in order to survive and thrive. As you begin to grow as a person and develop a sense of yourself detached and apart from others you need also to begin to grow a sense of respect for the thoughts, mindsets and beliefs of those you have encountered. I do not think anyone is born knowing how to be a good person or how to live ethically yet. Most start developing a set of values from whomever raised them parents, grandparents, or guardians. Or you can continue to grow and learn from yourself, friendships, and relationships. Analyzing what is working and what is leading you down a path you don’t want to go down. Picking and choosing the core values that set yourself up for success and happiness. Change comes from learning from your mistakes and experiences and then making a mindful choice about the ethics and values you want to express to yourself and others. Corporate ethics are slightly different, there are already a countless number of laws that exist setting a basic standard for ethics in the professional community. Now there are certain ethics that have completely shifted in the business world starting mostly in the 1960s. There are similarities between personal and corporate ethics, like being able to learn from mistakes and balance the companies or your own personal ethics, off those life experiences. Which in turn betters either you as a person or a company as a whole. A big difference I see between the two are if a company were to keep the ethics they originally had 10 to 20, maybe even 30 years ago things could go very wrong within the company as well as with people outside of the company.
