In her TedTalk, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie speaks about the issue of having a single story of any place or any people. Single stories result in stereotypes, in negative perceptions, and a complete lack of understanding of the true complexity under the surface. This constantly occurs with Africa, it’s people, and the situations that it faces from colonialism to the Rwandan genocide. Single stories are wrong and should be amended and complex understandings of other groups should be supported. Unfortunately, this rarely happens and we often face the world with simple understandings of other parts of the world. Ethnic complexity is important, integral for change, but the truth is that the so-called ethical paralysis is more common.

There must be a transitional phase between ethical paralysis and a complex understanding and this is what Jaja and Kamibili represent. They move from the single story that their own father and Father Benedict hold about Africa, it’s people, and its traditions to a complex understanding that considers the pre, during, and post-colonial phases of African history, which is more similar to what Aunty Ifeoma hold. This is an integral stage in that no one is born with a complex understanding and they learn from what they are exposed to. For Jaja and Kambili they know nothing but what their father has told and shown them. When they go to live with their Aunt, they begin their journey into complex understanding. This has been proven again and again throughout history with the encounters of various Europeans with the people of Africa and the Americas. It does not aid these groups to learn anything past these simple stories. This can be observed when we consider the Rwandan Genocide. When the Belgians were in power, they changed the meaning of what being Hutu and Tutsi meant and changed it into something that was just a meaningless title to an integral part of who these people were. Later on this lead to the Rwandan Genocide. Because of the United Nation’s, including the UN peacekeepers, single story based understanding kept them from effectively helping the people of Rwanda. Concerning the nature of myths, one can often find that they are built on broad generalization lacking the premises necessary to make a solid conclusion. Such was the same myths, Pier Larson sought to disprove in his essay “The Student’s ‘Ten Commandments’.” Larson discuss damaging and caustic stereotypes that have worked their way throughout history to create a narrative that often subordinates Blacks when promulgated by a more affluent European society . One myth in particular appears to be quite troubling for its contradictory nature-that being the myth: all Africans are Black. Additionally, to be African is to be Black, Africans are not culturally diverse, and that Africans share one, essentially unified culture. Not only do I find these troubling for their outright abasement of African culture, which is plain to see, but rather for the duplicitous logic that lead to the creation of such myths, and why they remain so harmful when they are continued to be spread in contemporary.

In the novel Segu, Maryse Conde beautifully constructs personal and in depth images of African history through the use of four main characters that depict the struggles and importance of family in what is now present day Mali. These four characters and also brothers, by the names of Tiekoro, Siga, Naba, and Malobali are faced with a world changing around their beloved city of Bambara with new customs of the Islamic religion and the developing ideas of European commerce and slave trade. These new expansions in Africa become stepping stones for the Troare brothers to face head on and they have brought both victory and heartache for them and their family. These four characters are centralized throughout this novel because they provide the reader with an inside account of what life is like during a time where traditional Africa begins to change due to the forceful injection of conquering settlers and religions. This creates a split between family members, a mixing of cultures, and the loss of one’s traditions in the Bambara society which is a reflection of the (WHAT ARE SOME CHANGES) changes that occur in societies across the world.
By utilizing an unbiased stance in his novel, Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe promotes cultural relativity without forcibly steering his audience to a particular mindset. He presents the flaws of the Ibo tribe the same way he presents the assets—without either condescension or pride; he presents the cruelties of the colonizers the same way he presents their open mindedness—without either resentment or sympathy. Because of this balance, readers are able to view the characters as multifaceted human beings instead of simply heroes and victims. Achebe writes with such subtle impartiality that American audiences do not feel guilty for the cruel actions of the colonizers or disgusted by the shocking traditions of the tribesmen. The readers stop differentiating the characters as either “tribesmen” or “colonizers”. They see them simply as people, much like themselves. With this mindset, the audience starts to reflect upon their own cultural weaknesses. Conversely, the colonizers forcefully declare their religion onto the tribesmen instead of neutrally presenting their beliefs. Achebe prevails over his anger to present his opinion without forcefulness and with open-minded consideration. Yes, the colonizers succeed in converting many tribesmen into Christians; however, their success is subjective because they destroy African culture in the process. Ultimately, Achebe is successful in delivering his political views, but he does so by encouraging open-mindedness and cultural relativity instead of forcing his individual ideals upon his readers.
The genocides of the 20th century which occurred in Rwanda and Germany had striking similarities, something that should have alerted the world to stop them. At the core of these two massacres, patterns existed that outlined how similar thinking and reasoning could lead to something as horrible as these two events. One can see how both groups used their command of knowledge as a way to control the people, how the rest of the world refused to step up to stop the killings, and how the people were thought of as less than humans to provide a just cause for such terrible acts.
Chinua Achebe was an influential Nigerian author during the 1900’s who was credited with his three essays which have been fused together into the book “Home and Exile”. In his stories he discusses things such as his own Igbo people, the problems with colonialization, the strength that stories can have and many more topics. A big part of his essays are on his thoughts of colonialism, the impact it has had on his home of Nigeria, and how stories written by others either helped justify colonialism or rejected it. Chinua argues that stories have their own power to fight, and while stories themselves do not have the ability to directly fight colonialism; they do, however with their power of words, stories can motivate and encourage people to stand up against colonialism. In proving this thesis to be a true statement, I will be providing evidence of the how, why and the extent to which stories can fight colonialism.
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” (Nelson Mandela). The concept of race is widely debated among social classes and among the individual levels of insight. In the past doctors and many other men of science attempted to divide us by “race” in the sense that our exterior features as human beings separated us from the only race, the human race. The documentary “Race the power of an illusion” took us through the history of racial division which gave the minorities the short end of the stick. The ideology that is supported by substantial evidence that race is no more than a facade, and travels no deeper than a few exterior differences. This somewhat recent discovery has not made an impact on society. Around the world, society refuses to accept the idea that there is no such thing as one race and it affects everybody that has been raised to think we are all genetically different based on demographics and exterior features. The effects of these unscholarly and ignorant beliefs are thoroughly examined in the documentary, Langston Hughes poetry, and Alan McPherson short stories.

Chimamanda Adichie, in one of her eye-opening speeches, The Danger of a Single Story, provides the audience with a new insight into the negative impacts that can occur as a result of viewing a story from a single perspective and not putting in an effort to know it from all available viewpoints. Adichie in her simple, yet well-grounded speech, filled with anecdotes of her personal experiences effectively puts across her argument against believing in stereotypes and limiting oneself to just a single story using a remarkable opening, the elements of logos, pathos and ethos, repetitions, as well as maintaining a good flow of thoughts throughout the speech.
In her TED talk, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie talks through the role of perception in her life and the way that it changes social relationships. We have all had plenty of experiences that surprise us in regard to perception, such as the first time we meet someone from another culture, or meeting someone from our past in a new light. We have been inundated with stereotypes and preconceived notions since we were children, through stories, media, parents, teachers, and friends. Moreover, these presuppositions that we carry are rarely, if ever, based on anything substantial, yet they show up in every aspect of our life. Adichie calls the notion of this one-sided preconceived bias the “single story.” This “single story” is interesting due to the fact that even if we can overcome it, we are still affected by it. Adichie speaks about how even though she had become enlightened to this dilemma, she is still subject to it. As for her experience, she states that,
