Despite the unending ethical debates on whether ethics are God sent or manmade, learned or innate, or whether it can be altered or not, the fact that ethics are invaluable to human being remains an uncontested fact. When we imagine a world devoid of ethical principles, we conceive a world full of vices; broad daylight murder, robbery, and all manner of ill human intervention against each other. Expectedly, a human being will be pushed off the brink of extinction if such vices culminate. Ethical parameters have proved to be an important part of human existence and breaking of any is perceived a violation of the social norm. Arguments have been raised over utilitarianism focus upon the community’s happiness than those of individual’s. To counter such views, Jeremy argues that the community is made of individuals (Bentham 458). As a result, utilitarianism address individualism since individual’s happiness constitutes communal happiness. Carritt countered an argument that postulated that pain and pleasure cannot be measured and that it is difficult to know what brings more pain and pleasure (Carritt 447). E.F Carrritt rejected the claim on the grounds that while happiness cannot be measured, comparisons can be drawn on whether an action brings happiness by setting two sample populations side by side. Understandably, utilitarianism was never developed on the mathematical ground. What matters during comparison is whether the happiness produced outweighs the pain. Is utilitarianism a rational belief? The question has resulted in many backs and forth arguments and counter-arguments. The ideal world that everyone hopes for is that which every problem can be met and solved. For example, according to worldhunger.org, despite the stiff scarcity in some areas, food across the world if evenly distributed can meet each person’s need. Owing to its simplicity and flexibility; corruption, cruel regimes, racism, and other forms of societal deviances would be uprooted if the principle is applied efficiently. Utilitarianism’s key goal would be to ensure societal happiness at all cost, even by wiping out corrupt rulers and tyrants. The flexibility of the utilitarianism concept makes it easy to apply in any situation. Despite its highly documented strengths, utilitarianism also presents some weaknesses. The core principle of utilitarianism is ensuring greatest happiness; however, the belief might deter some individuals. Often, the majority is never right, and this translates that what brings happiness to the majority might be false. For example, in a racist society where the majority is people of specified color, what brings happiness is segregation of the minority group with the different color.
