Set in the late 1890s in Starkfield, Massachusetts during the cold winter months, Ethan Frome is the story of a man named Ethan Frome who battles with aspects of social isolation. Aside from being considered a loner within the already small, tight-knit community that was Starkfield, Ethan spent time caring for his chronically ill wife, Zeena - as well as having conversations with Mattie, who originally came to live with the married couple to assist with caring for Zeena. In regards to his relationship with these two ladies, and himself, it can be seen how they change over time, mostly due to the progression of his actions. This poor decision making, in turn, can show the correlation between Ethan’s struggles throughout his life, and his mood toward his problems. Acknowledging that social isolation plays a role in a person’s life, to the extent that it is present, how has social isolation driven Ethan Frome’s decision making, and how do readers see these decisions affect Ethan’s self-image, his relationships, and his attitude toward the community in which he resides? Social isolation can be defined as “the objective absence or near-existence of social relationships or connections, is a quantitative measure of network size, network diversity, and frequency of contact and describes the extent to which an individual is socially isolated” (“Ge”). Looking at the manner Ethan Frome’s character is portrayed, it can be seen that he expresses multiple relative traits of social isolation/rejection. This includes, but is not limited to: loneliness, depressive symptoms, having a weak/small social network, impulsive behavior, and infrequent social interactions. “Social rejection is an all-too-common feature of the human social environment” (“Chester”). And due to his disability, he is typically confined and away from the day-to-day life of most townspeople. Due to this, Ethan can be considered an outsider of the town’s community, thus leading readers to believe that he experiences the prior mentioned traits of social isolation. To a newcomer, Ethan is described as “an old man [...] surprised [...] he was not more than fifty-two” (Wharton). He limps across the snowy roads of Starkfield with a “bleak and unapproachable [...] face” (Wharton). Even before the narrator knew Ethan Frome’s story, negative observations and assumptions were already made about him due to his stature and physical impairments. The narrator is essentially indicating that Ethan is abnormal; unlike the rest of the townspeople, due to his injuries. This proves the point of Chester, who mentioned how common it is for people to go through this type of biased analysis of others. Seeing as how most members of the community do not bother to stop and chat with him, overtime this perhaps could have caused him to seclude himself from the community more and more.
