Hamlet is a revenge tragedy which focuses primarily on Hamlet’s desire and attempt to avenge his father’s death. It all the started when Hamlet returned to the state of Denmark because of his father’s death. When Hamlet is first introduced to us, it is clearly said how Hamlet is in the depths of sorrow as King Claudius asked Hamlet,” How is it that clouds still hang on you?” and the Queen said to Hamlet,” Cast thy knighted colors off”. One can envision him as someone who radiates his sorrow over his father’s death. Hamlet’s attitude changed from the sadness of his father’s death to anger when the ghost had revealed that his Uncle, King Claudius killed his father by poisoning him on his ear. Follow by his Mother’s marriage in which Hamlet called an ‘incestuous marriage’. The loss of Hamlet’s father affected him greatly and thus affects his relationship to other people.
When his father died, Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude married Claudius only after two months. Hamlet called it an ‘incestuous marriage’ because the marriage is just too sudden. He thinks that it is not right and it is not based on true love as he said,” You cannot call it love, for at your age the hey-day in the blood is tame, it’s humble. And waits upon judgment.” He feels disgusted to the Queen because she should be mourning instead of being remarried to the King’s brother, Claudius. It is shown how his mother’s action in marrying his uncle affected Hamlet as he said, “She married -O most wicked speed! To post with such anxiety to incestuous sheets! ...over thinking if it is the right thing to do as he said, “Conscience doth makes cowards of us all.” But sometimes he acts based on his own impulse leading to catastrophe as he killed Polonius destroying his relationship to the two other characters as it is their father who got killed, by Hamlet simply thinking that it is the king who is behind that arras. The climax occurs when Hamlet finally takes revenge, but unlike it is for Fortinbras, Hamlet’s revenge comes with great cost to all. His previous inability to act and take revenge sooner cause, ironically, the death of his mother, Polonius, and the woman he loved, Ophelia. Tragic ending finish the story where almost everyone ended up dying even the main character Hamlet. It shows how the disappointment and loss affected the relationships of a character or individual in Hamlet.
