Why should we be moral?
I can remember being told in high school that “having good morals was important”. I can also remember trying to figure out how to be ‘moral”. I know now that I shouldn't have had any response because I had no idea what the word moral actually meant. Like most, it is a word I know but it is hard define it. The purpose of this essay is to answer the age old question, “Should we be moral”. My answer is simple. Yes, we should be moral. I will explain why we should be moral and then I'm going to give an opinion to my spot. First, though, I need a meaning of moral on which to state my position.
What does moral mean? Merriam Webster defines moral as “concerning or relating to what is right and wrong in human behavior.” Morals split actions and thoughts into good or bad. A good behavior is moral, a bad behavior is immoral. Morality is the set of rules that we should obey as productive members of society understanding that moral humans perform “good actions” and immoral people perform “bad actions”. There is ...
Before I look at each of the specific aspects though, the question arises: “How can one be moral?” By definition, to be moral is to be concerned with the principles or rules of right conduct or the distinction between right and wrong. Expanding on this is the principle of ethics. This is simply a system of moral principles.
There has been a huge debate throughout the years of whether humans are ethical by nature or not. Despite Christian Keyser’s research evidence that humans are ethical by nature, the evidence from the Milgram experiment shows that we are not ethical by nature. Humans learn to be ethical through genetic disposition as well as environmental factors such as culture, socialization, and parenting. In order to understand if we are ethical or not, we need to understand the difference between being moral or ethical. Many people believe that being moral and ethical are the same thing, but these two terms are a bit different. “Morality is primarily about making correct choices, while ethics is about proper reasoning” (Philosopher, web). Morality is more
What is morality? Merriam-Webster dictionary states that morality is/are the beliefs about what right behavior is and what wrong behavior is
Morality is a particular system of values concerning the distribution between right and wrong or good or bad behavior. Macbeth morality of an action is committing the evil deed, he deliberately thinks the treacherous nature. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the moral of a play is identified through personal ambition and its disastrous results. Macbeth ends up killing his loyal King believing the witches prophecy. He kills his only best friend, assuming that his best friend might have been suspicious of King Murder.
When one thinks about morals, he or she often find himself in difficulty. It is a fact that morals are mostly passed from one generation to another. However, we all face challenges when trying to understand whether they are all accurate or not. To start with, Morals are those values that normally protect life and always respectful of the dual life value of individual and others. Therefore, Morals are those rules that normally govern actions that re wrong or right. We know that morals may be for all people in the society or individual beliefs in the society. Some of the great morals include freedom, charity, truth, honesty and patience and all of them have a common goal. It is a fact that when they function well in the society, they end up protecting and enhancing life. These morals need to be examined always to make sure that they are performing their mission of protecting life. As a matter of fact, morals are derived from the government and society, self and religion. When morals are derived from the government and society, they tend to change as the morals and laws of the society changes. An example of the changes is seen in the cases of marriage versus individuals living together. It is true that in the past generation, it was quite rare to see any couple living together without having any legal matrimonial ceremony. However, this
One’s morals set in place the actions they see as proper and improper in their current society. Individuals in the same socioeconomic settings tend to overlap and correspond to each other. Other times morals are nonexistent or different due to one’s upbringing and culture, this means that ‘appropriate’ decisions as seen by some people may be seen as ‘inappropriate’ to others. Evil in terms of morals can be defined as someone 's morals being so extreme or nonexistent when compared to those of modern society 's views that they can not be logically comprehended.
Morals are having principles or habits with respect to right or wrong conduct (“Morals”). Having morals is something that people can have or lack. In religion, believing in a god with morals is a necessity. In Ancient Greece, however, Greek religion believed in gods and goddesses with immoral behaviors.
Morality: it is a term that is questioned at every corner of every day. The moral idea ranges from something small such as helping an old women cross the street, to the extreme such as the recent actions taken by politicians to limit public union rights in Wisconsin. Dictating the difference between right and wrong has been an issue that dates to the times before Christ, where the idea of moral perfection was used to determine one’s right of passage into heaven. It was not until Benjamin Franklin, who published a guide within of his autobiography, describing thirteen steps to achieving moral perfection. Franklin used these morality milestones to thrive in living a successful life and eventually become one of the founding fathers of the United States.
To act morally means one must think and act in such a way that always considers, supports, and attempts to improve general welfare; furthermore, such thoughts and actions must occur because of moral intentions, not just because one has to. Also, pre-defined rules exist for the common good and these rules help with moral judgment. Such rules would include “no killing”, “no stealing”, and “no lying”. These don’t exist to provide an advantage or cause disadvantage—they exist simply for the good of every individual. To have morality means one must always adhere to these rules no matter the consequences, who is affected, or how it happens, because they only ensure the most good for everyone. However, one’s own standards for morality must also remain considerate of that of others’.
“The principals of concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior.” According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, this is the definition of morality today. But what some people don’t know is that this definition is the same as it was during the time of the Trojan War in The Iliad. During this time the Greek view on a man with good morality would be a man who would make decisions for someone other than himself. Someone who would think of others before making a decision that would help just a single person. In The Iliad there are two main characters in which would be believed to have good morals. But despite Achilles abilities on the battle field, Agamemnon has better personality traits that help to make him morally
Now, I personally believe that people absolutely should be moral for several reasons. The main one being. I believe that it 's natural for people to want to do the right thing and that deep down they want to do the right thing, but through circumstances, the understanding of
Moral perfection is something that I strive for in my life. Moral perfection is just an ideal, but I can always improve. Before breaking my arm I thought that I was a pretty good person, but the Lord always has a way of humbling his children. I thought I was a star of a team, star of a village, star of a musical, star in the classroom and in one night I was reminded of who I truly was. Yes I maybe those things I mentioned, but I am truly just a child of God who strives to be an example. I lost my way from the Lord and thought my own way was better and I was wrong. The hardest part of this paper was being able to humble myself and admitting that I let pride take over my life. While sitting in a hospital bed and I could not go to the bathroom, then I realized what pain truly is to me.
Moral ethics is the belief that all human beings are born to know right from wrong. We come into this world as good people, but the temptations and challenges in life influence our mind set to as it will. Every person on Earth chooses if they’re to follow through with their life of good or go down the path of bad. “A person’s moral ethics” (unknown.)
When asked what is the definition of ethics, many responded that being moral meant doing the right thing. But how can we justify what is a good action and what is a bad action? All humans were created equal, but our principles, and ways of thinking can be extremely different. Some may say doing the right thing means following your heart, your inner feelings and intuition. But emotions can be misleading. Others say in order to do what is the morally right thing means to follow the law and do what is right by society, to be accepted. But today’s society is judgmental and can be corrupted with numerous opinions due to the diversity of cultures. So what does it mean to be ethical? Being ethical means doing what is right in terms of virtues, fairness, duties, responsibilities, obligations, and moral believes all which derived from cultures and family backgrounds.
be moral? If I should be, then why? Why is morality important to society? An
