It is apparent that socialization of culture is prevalent in all schools, but how is this done? We have to examine the multiple ways authority figures in schools socialize whiteness to Black students. This starts with racializing behaviors. Teachers and authority figures are equating certain behaviors with Blackness, even if all students, regardless of race, preform these behaviors. Teachers would connect Ebonics or “talking Black” to the student’s poor performance in school. These behaviors are seen as “deviant” behaviors, which are just behaviors that are outside of the social norm (Judson) Black behavior and the practicing of Black culture has always been seen as deviant, through everyday actions. Blackness has always been seen as deviant, as a way to further oppress Blacks within all of society. Through racializing these behaviors, the assignment of Blackness to deviant behaviors is what ultimately shapes our views of what Blackness is and how it equates to life success. With the racializing of these behaviors, authority figures in schools begin to adultify these children based on these behaviors. Adultifying is when authority figures, particularly the ones in schools, begin to interpret children’s behaviors as if they were adults (Golash Boza 228). This is done disproportionately to students of color. For discipline, it is no longer, “boys will be boys” but now it’s “you are going to live a life in and out of jail”. This adultifying has a direct effect on the severity of the punishment these students are receiving. Black students are being punished in schools for Black culture or “Black actions”, or deviant behaviors that are far from the Eurocentric norm. This is apparent in the numbers behind the punishment. Black students are four times more likely to receive an out of school suspension than white students, and twice as likely to receive and an in school suspension
Black youth have their innocence stripped of them at an early age. We are exposed to so much hatred. There is hatred from outside world, which can manifest itself in the form of police brutality, racism, micro-aggressions, and messages from the media. Or it can be internalized self-hatred, which stems from the household and others within the culture. But either or, black youth have to learn to protect themselves from a dangerous world. And by knowing we have to protect ourselves, we become afraid of the world, and we have this fear that we cannot be our full selves. We feel limited, because no matter we do, we will be judged, criticized, or killed. And the only way to avoid that is to fit into the mold that society has made for us.
Tatum’s book “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” (1997) analyses the development of racial identity and the influence of racism in American’s culture. She emphasizes the Black-White interactions by comparing the terminology in which racism perceived based on David Wellman’s definition of racism. Tatum also believes racism is not one person in particular but is a cultural situation in which ethnicity assigns some groups significantly privileged compared to others. She illustrates how engaging children in terms of interracial understanding will empower them to respond to racial stereotypes and systems of discrimination.
In America, essentially everyone is classified in terms of race in a way. We are all familiar with terms such as Caucasian, African-American, Asian, etc. Most Americans think of these terms as biological or natural classifications; meaning that all people of a certain race share similarities on their D.N.A. that are different and sets that particular race apart from all the other races. However, recent genetic studies show that there’s no scientific basis for the socially popular idea that race is a valid taxonomy of human biological difference. This means that humans are not divided into different groups through genetics or nature. Contrary to scientific studies, social beliefs are reflected through racial realism. Racial realists believe that being of a particular race does not only have phenotypical values (i.e. skin color, facial features, etc.), but also broadens its effects to moral, intellectual and spiritual characteristics.

Our daily lives are affected by race whether we are aware of it or not. How we live different aspects of our lives depend on the colour of our skin.
