As I a Medical Practice Manager of twenty-five years, I’ve watched the role of healthcare managers evolve into something much more complex and demanding. This evolution has caused me personal strain and stress as I endeavor to exceed my employer’s expectations and inspire others. As often is the case, evolution gives pause to revelation-I must invest in education and industry certification to provide myself with additional tools and enhanced skills.
My professional aspirations are to complete my bachelor’s degree in Business management in 2016 and to become a certified Practice Manager in 2017. Achieving these aspirations will undoubtedly elevate my management skills thereby increasing employment satisfaction, quality of life and my ability to help as many individuals along the way which are two of my personal goals.
In order to complete my Bachelor’s degree, I first needed to research, select and enroll in a regionally accredited online degree program that is affordable and reputable. In my employment setting, tuition reimbursement is a wonderful benefit; however, to date reimbursement has only been approved for credits earned from a traditional brick and mortar institution. Once again, effective management skills or certain qualifications enhance a healthcare organization environment. Healthcare managers and supervisors must have the capacity to handle challenges while the organization objectives and regulations may change over a period of time. Effective healthcare management governs the success of a healthcare organization. There are many different skill sets and leadership styles to be effective as a manager. After a 60 minute interview with Dr. Rob Geis, Director of Procurement at BayCare Health System, I was ready to take on the world. Dr. Geis completed his Masters and Doctoral degree at State University while working at BayCare. After completing the two advanced degrees he was promoted to Director. Currently he teaches two online classes at The University of Phoenix on Health Care management and procurement. As a director at BayCare Health System he has to hold trainings for potential vendors and current vendors along with the training sessions for employees that will directly intervene with the vendors of the behalf of the Health System. It was inspiring to see someone who has successfully blended three different adult learner experiences together; a student, corporate trainer, and adjunct professor.

Healthcare administration provides leadership and managemnt to health care systems, hospitals, and private or public health systems. There are requirements for most professions in the health industry but with the proper education and certification, most entry-level careers are attainable. Healthcare administrators are leaders so one must be able to handle the responsibility of the job. There are characteristics that can be associated with being a health care administrator. Introduction and Goals I have been in the workforce for many years and over time my interest in earning a college degree has been something on a wish list. Professionally, I landed a job at a company that provided me with opportunities to grow from an administrative assistant to my current position as a sales administration manager. The accumulation of knowledge that I acquired over the years that has proven to be valuable. As the business expanded and investors demand a variety of information pertaining to growth, industry comparisons and risks, it became apparent that many of us did not have enough knowledge on how to respond quickly and accurately to these new demands.
The opportunity to obtain a degree through an online setting has provided some liberation to students who then take advantage of that opportunity. The problem, however, lies in employment upon successful completion of an online program. Having an online degree possibly means some bumps down the road of employment, being that the degree could perhaps be ranked lower, as opposed to the traditional degree. Studies show that employers are more prone to hire someone with a traditional degree versus an online degree. In the Chronicle of Online Education, Carnevale states that, “The reviews of individuals who assess qualified candidates for particular positions demonstrate an inclination against online degrees, although these programs are becoming more readily accessible through universities on the web (Carnevale 2007)”. It is clear that even with the qualifications that one may possess from online education, employers still remain inclined. Some employers may feel that the degrees can’t correlate with one another and that one receives a better understanding of the coursework at traditional colleges. In regards to school finance, the ultimate goal of school administrators is to provide all students with the most cost effective, comprehensive education that meets all federal, state, and local requirements and that reflects the values and beliefs within the community. This means that it is an expectation for schools to equip all students equally with the best possible educational opportunities that a community is willing to furnish. However, to accomplish this, school administrators must be able to sustain school programs throughout various economic periods.
