Introduction
The endomembrane system is the membrane surrounding the organelle within the cytoplasm. Each membrane bound organelle is functionally and structurally compartmentalized within cell. The presence of this system is the fundamental difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes (Raven, Johnson, 2001). Each of membranes is unique and different in relation to molecular compositions and its structure which continue to keep changing in cell’s life time (Reece et al. 2011). This essay is focus on the comparisons of two endomembrane systems, Golgi apparatus and plasma membrane in terms of their structures and functions. Additionally, the consequences to the cell if each of these membranes lost their integrity will be explained.
Structure
The structure of Golgi apparatus is composed of semi-circular and flattened stacks of membrane-bound disc known as cisternae and these stacks of cisternae divide into three regions, cis face, medial and trans face. Cis-face is near endoplasmic reticulum and it mainly receives (or fuse with) the vesicles containing products from ER and synthesize and process to send them off through trans face which is located near plasma membrane and medial Golgi apparatus is between them. Plasma membrane is also a biological membrane that forms selective barrier between the surrounding environment and cell and it consists of phospholipid bilayer with various proteins either embedded or attached to it (Reece et al. 2011).
Lipid composition
Though all endomembrane system have simple basic structure which is double layer of phospholipid (hydrophobic side inward and hydrophilic side outward) with proteins, the composition of lipids and types of proteins may differ due to their characteristic functions. (Campbel...

...yers and have various different functions. Although their compositions that consists of two membranes have some differences, the fact that cis sides are more ER-like and those on the trans side are more plasma membrane-like has enable us to speculate couple of theories about the origin of Golgi apparatus. They both are engaged in secretory pathway at different stages and failure of the membrane integrity affects greatly on the traffic of cell which leads to number of diseases. Despite many researches and knowledge discovered in plasma membrane, there were only few things known about Golgi apparatus. This is mainly due to the difficulties of purifying the concentrated organelle from intact cells (Sean Murno, 1998). But it still has great potentials and is prominent in medical field. Therefore more detail examination and investigation in depth are expected in future.
plasma membranes, meaning animals and plants contain lipids. In this paper I will display and
Epithelia tissue : Epithelial tissue, the type of tissue that lines the surfaces and cavities of your body 's organs, epithelia may be composed of several layers of cells called compound epithelia or just a single layer known as simple epithelia.
The prevalence of diagnosed endocrinological disorders has increased during the 20th century and into the 21st century. These disorders interfere in the day to day lives of those who have them. A common disorder of the endocrine system is diabetes, type 1 and type 2. While there have been many treatment methods used of the years the use of biotechnology like recombinant DNA technology has revolutionized and standardized the treatments.
Endometriosis appears to be caused by multiple factors such as the implantation of endometrial tissue outside of the endometrium, immune dysfunction, abnormal hormonal signaling, and genetics.
Eukaryotic plasma membranes in a fluid state have been found to contain a low cholesterol content of approximately one cholesterol to every 16 lipid molecules (Harby 2001). The effect of additional cholesterol in a plasma membrane on cell membrane fluidity and survival was studied in an experiment by Purdy et al. (2005), who used Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHO) and bull sperm to test this effect. Assuming that changing a membrane's cholesterol content can modify its fluidity at differe...
We have all heard stories of a friend or family member trying to conceive but failing at it for unknown reasons. They spend years, thousands of dollars and many tears only to still not conceive. Then, the woman is finally given the diagnosis of endometriosis. Based on statistical evidence and studies endometriosis is the leading cause of infertility in woman of reproductive age. Not only is it a devastating diagnosis but also an extremely hard disease to diagnosis. At times getting misdiagnosed and ignored by medical professionals. Leading to more years of pain for the woman suffering from a very debilitating disease.
If we examine the detailed structures of many transmembrane proteins, we see that they often have three different domains, two hydrophilic and one hydrophobic .(fig 1&2) A hydrophilic domain (consisting of hydrophilic amino acids) at the N-terminus pokes out in the extracellular medium, a hydrophobic domain in the middle of the amino acid chain, often only 20-30 amino acids long, is threaded through the plasma membrane, and a hydrophilic domain at the C-terminus protrudes into the cytoplasm. The transmembrane domain, because it is made of amino acids having hydrophobic side chains, exists comfortably in the hydrophobic inner layers of the plasma membrane. Because these transmembrane domains anchor many proteins in the lipid bilayer, these proteins are not free-floating and cannot be isolated and purified biochemically without first dissolving away the lipid bilayer with detergents. (Indeed, much of the washing we do in our lives is necessitated by the need to solubilize proteins that are embedded in lipid membranes using detergents!)
Cell membranes are selectively permeable which can let things in and kick some out. The cell membrane is liquidly and is made out of different things like a mosaic. That’s how the cell membrane got its name fluid mosaic model. The fluid mosaic model of the cell membrane has a different mixture of phospholipids, cholesterol, and proteins. The carbohydrates are attached
What You Need to Know About Endometriosis and Your Fertility. Doubling over with pain during your period? Sometimes, it's way more than just a serious case of cramps. For approximately 176 million women globally, it's endometriosis, a painful disease in which tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus grows outside of the uterus. And unfortunately, endometriosis is one of the leading causes of infertility and one of the more difficult ones to treat, says Shahin Ghadir, M.D., reproductive endocrinologist at Southern California Reproductive Center.
The reproductive systems are based off of the goal to create offspring. Both the male and the female reproductive systems, although fueled by a similar goal, have different components and structures. Both systems are very complex in their own way, making it important for one to understand how each of the systems and their various processes work. Knowing the processes and components of the male and female reproductive systems will aid all people in their life, sometime or another. It’s important to understand how our individual bodies work and how life is produced.
The human body is a network of muscles, bones, organs and overall, it is constantly working in its own ways to make sure that the body is performs and functions properly. The most important systems in the body, the nervous and endocrine system, both play huge roles in regulating the biological processes inside an organism. They are the basic systems that pretty much control the body, helping it react properly to any external factor. The main difference between these two systems is that the nervous system uses impulses to control the muscles while the endocrine uses chemical stimuli to pass the signal to the target cells or organs. These two systems have their
An obstetrician is one thing, and a gynecologist is another. The job is combined together, but the two branches can be worked separately. An obstetrician is a physician who focuses and is trained in the management of pregnancy, labor, and pueperium (the period following childbirth). A physician who has specialized and trained in the health of the female reproductive system is a gynecologist. The reason the jobs are combined is because they’re both all about women. Obstetricians and Gynecologists are physicians who provide general medical care to women. They equip medical care associated with pregnancy or childbirth, and they diagnose, treat, and help prevent diseases, especially those affecting the female
There are many functions lipids have. One of the main functions lipids are structural components in the cell. Lipids make up approximately 50% of the mass of most cell membranes. The lipids that are found in the cell membrane are called phospholipid. Phospholipid are the predominant lipids of cell membrane. Phospholipids aggregate or self-assemble when mixed with water, but in a different manner than the soaps and detergents. Because of the two pendant alkyl chains in phospholipids and the unusual mixed charges in their head groups, micelle formation is unfavorable relative to a bilayer structure.
In our present society, people cannot deny that the changes in this world have been tied to the advancement of the technology. It has evolved with this society so deeply where such conveniences are no longer luxuries but rather necessities. Unfortunately, the most affected group of people from the developed technology is the younger age people (Subrahmanyam, 2000). In the past, children were more lively and active: playing outdoors, running around, climbing trees and remaining active rather than watching television and playing video game and computer. It is true that the use of the technology has its own virtue. It provides value, convenience and entertainment, but it should not take the place of movement and realistic play from the children. Obviously, modern technology such as television, digital game, cell phone, and computer should be considered as a major fact, which contributing to negative health problems in children.
Plasma membrane is made up of two layers of phospholipids which are a class of lipids and has many proteins embedded in it. The proteins have a function of providing support and shape to a cell. There are three different proteins in cell membranes (see appendix 1). The plasma membrane also regulates the entry and exit of the cell, as many molecules cross the cell membrane by osmosis and Prokaryotes include several kinds of microorganisms, such as bacteria and cyanobacteria. Eukaryotes include microorganisms as fungi, protozoa, and simple algae.
