The Canadian dream is the new American dream

“The great American dream has moved to Canada,” declares social entrepreneur, international development reform advocate, and writer Scott Gilmore in his latest essay in the Canadian news magazine Maclean’s.

According to him, the United States is no longer the leader of the world in terms of being the land of opportunity. “There are now dozens of other countries that have surpassed the United States; chief among these is its unassuming northern neighbour, Canada.,” he writes.

He says that Canada has surpassed the US in many categories that it once ruled. Among these are the following:

1. Life expectancy
Canadians has a life expectancy of 81. 2years as oppose to Americans’ 78.7 years.

2. Happiness

Human freedom
Canadians are the 6th freest people in the world, whereas Americans are the 17th.

7. Press freedom
Canada is 18th in the world, while the US lags behind at 41st.

8. Equality
Canada’s “Gini coefficient”, a measurement of economic inequality, is better than America’s and has been the case for a total of 80 years now.

“Whether it was due to geography or history or maybe even policy, we have arrived. Everything America once aspired to be, we now are. Not only have we achieved the fabled American Dream, we are arguably among the safest, healthiest, happiest human beings to have ever existed,” Gilmore proclaims.

However, Gilmore says that Canadians must see and understand that beyond the country’s being a welcoming nation, a feat that has received praise from the rest of the world, is the other half of the flourishing society that still lives in scarcity.

“Perhaps it is time we also took on the role as the land of the free, and opened our doors wider still. Numerous studies have shown Canada could easily absorb far more immigrants than we do now. In fact, if we want to protect our economy from the effects of an aging population and declining birth rate, we need to attract more,” he
