This sprawl is affecting Brampton in positive and negative ways. The question is how this sprawl will affect me in the future. Suburban sprawl is something that needs to be thought of and controlled more carefully. Urban development (such as housing and construction) spreading into rural or suburban areas can be described as suburban sprawl. For example, Toronto’s urban development expanding into Brampton. Suburban sprawl can mean that human needs such as public transit or stores could be reached without having to travel a long distance. Firstly, Brampton is losing constantly losing farmland due to development like commercial areas and housing. This would mean that residents would have less local food to buy and Brampton wouldn’t be able as much of their local food as they used to. In addition, this development is giving the Brampton government more things to pay for, so taxes might increase in the next few years. However, this suburban sprawl can result in some positives like public transit. Developing public transit can take many cars off the road, which creates less traffic, and less car chemicals damaging the atmosphere. For example, the Mount Pleasant GO Station, which was made a few years ago, has let many people in Brampton to travel to places using train or bus. Although suburban sprawl may have its advantages now, there are more things to consider when looking into the future. There are many ways in which suburban sprawl can affect my future.
First of all, as I explained before, the more urban development happens, the more the city has to pay for. Of course, if this sprawl continues at the same rate, civilians would have to pay more taxes in the future. Furthermore, although transit is being majorly developed, the sprawl is also making cities more dependent on automobiles. For example, to go somewhere nearby, it is much easier to go in a personal vehicle rather than having to wait for a bus. As the city develops more, it is creating more nearby places to go to. This is how suburban sprawl could result in me becoming more dependent on my personal automobile in the future. Lastly, sprawl can lead to climate change and air pollution in the future. This is because it requires energy for things like construction and automotive transit which results in burning fossil fuel. With the increased amount of fossil fuels burned, it would also increase the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. That is how suburban sprawl could affect my
future. As you can see, there are many things to consider when thinking of suburban sprawl. Suburban sprawl is the expansion of urban areas into low-density, rural, or suburban areas. It can have both positive and negative effects on Brampton. Finally, the government needs to consider how this sprawl will affect people in the future. All in all, the economic, environmental, and social impact are things that need to put into consideration before suburban sprawl happens.
There are many examples of cities reforming itself over time, one significant example is Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. More than a hundred years after the discovery of gold that drew thousands of migrants to Vancouver, the city has changed a lot, and so does one of its oldest community: Downtown Eastside. Began as a small town for workers that migrants frequently, after these workers moved away with all the money they have made, Downtown Eastside faced many hardships and changes. As a city, Vancouver gave much support to improve the area’s living quality and economics, known as a process called gentrification. But is this process really benefiting everyone living in Downtown Eastside? The answer is no. Gentrification towards DTES(Downtown Eastside) did not benefit the all the inhabitants of the area. Reasons are the new rent price of the area is much higher than before the gentrification, new businesses are not community-minded, and the old culture and lifestyle of the DTES is getting erased by the new residents.
Vancouver is not affordable to live for the young professionals due to gentrification problems. The economy requires gentrification to develop the city. In order for a city to flow better, more people have to spend and sell. Furthermore, for people to spend or sell more, it requires more people to live. However, gentrification is pushing people away from their homes, and makes it difficult for the young professionals to move in. Therefore, a lot of young professionals and working class would move out and live outside the city.
In modern suburbs things like cul-de-sacs and tangle towns are more common to be designed with. This makes it virtually impossible to include a mass transit system into the suburb. Thus, more driving, more gas use, and more emissions created in the atmosphere. A common response to this from a suburban residential is that the city is jam packed with congestion and pollution from stop and go traffic. Yet with cities, they are more dense, highly populated and many of the stop and go traffic is created by workers who live in the suburbs coming into the city at rush hour. One thing that works well in a typical city is mass transit. Things like buses, subways and train systems work well with block by square block areas, but not so with winding curving neighborhoods such as in suburbs. Another reason why mass transit does not play a major roll in the life of one who lives in a suburb is that suburban commuting consists of many different directions and destinations. Where as in the city typical people are commuting into the downtown. A central destination such as a downtown keeps things more conveniently close, and since so many people are making the trip to one single common place then gas can be saved by major carpooling, or in other words mass transit.

One must remember that sprawl is all about people, and one of the greatest factors that drive the trends of their behavior is culture. It is true that there are many other factors (I.E. economic) at play in the manifestation of sprawl, but the factor of culture is what lies at the very core of the entire issue. This core is the argument that Americans have gradually moved toward a socially and individually isolated culture. Essentially, the American community has become more disjointed and impermanent, creating an atmosphere in which living in a more dense population has become undesirable.
The rezoning of 125th street has been a topic of controversy and has yet to be approved. The Department of City Planning believes rezoning of 125th street will bring positive economic changes. I personally believe that these changes would negatively affect the residents and business owners of Harlem. According to the New York City’s Planning Commission, the rezoning will bring new business and housing. Residents and business owners disagree because they believe this plays a bigger role in promoting further “gentrification.” I believe that Harlem should be able to keep its cultural heritage while still promoting and modifying economic growth.
