VIEWPOINT Ship grounding is a type of marine accident. When the bottom of the shipor the hull impacts the ocean bed and damage is caused to the structure of the ship it is termed as ship grounding. The environment and the sea bed, Danger posed to human life, Financial consequence for the local community and the shipping company. Grounding can have adverse and not so adverse effects on the structure of the ship. When the effects are not so adverse it is termed as soft grounding. Even in the case of soft grounding a thorough inspection needs to be made by experts and the vessel not be allowed to sail if the impact has effected the structure of the ship. When heavy damage is caused to a ship it is termed as wallop grounding. The structure and the stability of the ship are compromised in the case of wallop grounding. The hull and the submerged parts of the vessel suffer heavy damage. This could also lead to further accidents. Like any accident that occurs, marine accidents including ship grounding can prove to be fatal for not only people on board but around the area also. In Kate Chopin’s story “The Storm” it talks about love and lust. It speaks of two kind of storm that occurs. These two storms I find to be the central part of the story, and is being represented as a symbol within the story. The first storm is the most obvious one that Bibi and Bobinot are faced with. The second storm isn’t that visible for it involves Calixta and Alcee. Just as like most storms they come and pass.
The storm acts as a catalyst in the story as it causes the events to unfold as they do. The first real direct effect the storm has in the story is that it is what causes Bobinot and Bibi to stay at the local store to take shelter. This of course leaves Calixta home alone. Alcee, we are lead to believe, was out riding his horse somewhere near Calixta s house when the storm started. This causes him to take shelter there.
The disaster that took place on the Ocean Ranger had a very large effect on the way Newfoundlander's feel about the gas and oil industry. The government examined the safety issues that led to this disaster and has implemented numerous changes to enhance the safety of the offshore workforce. The Newfoundland and Canadian government set up a combined royal commission to investigate the disaster of the Ocean Ranger and to provide recommendations to improve safety. Two years after the disaster, the royal commission on the Ocean Ranger disaster concluded that the deaths resulted not only from the storm and flaws in the rig's design, but also from a lack of human knowledge.

The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger is an account of an immense storm and its destructive path through the North Atlantic. In late October of 1991, crews of several different fishing ships left their port for their final haul. Little did they know that they would soon cross paths with one of the greatest storms ever recorded. This particular storm would create huge swells, high winds, and hard rain. The system, was said to be a “perfect storm” because all of the elements were just right to create the worst imaginable storm ever seen, “… a hundred-year event,” claimed some meteorologists. These types of storms are caused when: “Warm air is less dense than cool air; it rises off the surface of the ocean, cools in the upper atmosphere, and then dumps its moisture before rushing back to earth.
