Two days before the disaster a fire had occurred at the dock where the boat was stationed. The fire that happened two days before the disaster was started by a cigarette. And their is a law stating that their is no smoking on or around the dock. The grandcamp boat was a recently re-activated boat that measured 437 feet in length. At eight o’clock the crew could see smoke coming from the boat. And at nine o’clock the captain ordered his crew to steam the fire. It is a method where steam is piped into extinguishers to preserve the cargo. Their was so much steam that it blew the hatches open and it started blowing out of the ship in a yellow and orange color. The unusual color and smell of the smoke attracted many people and many of the people noticed that the water around the boat started boiling. The fire grew so big that it started to attack the people around the dock and started to burn them. Then it happened the ammonium nitrate exploded and destroyed the boat. Where the ammonium nitrate was stored it blew a huge hole in the side of the boat and and almost completely blew the boat in half. The destruction of the explosion was so bad that it destroyed the whole town of Texas City. The shock of the explosion was so bad that people felt it in louisiana two hundred and fifty miles away. The explosion caused a fifteen foot wave that was detectable one hundred miles away. Any buildings near by were completely flattened to the ground. Anybody within forty miles away their windows were shattered. The explosion was so great that it sent all of the cargo on board such as peanuts, tobacco, twine, and bunker oil two thousand to three thousand feet in the air. It was so loud that the blast was heard one hundred …show more content…
It killed the majority of the people on board the Grandcamp that day and killed many of people living in Texas City. When the explosion occurred it killed many people living in Texas City and most of the people living their were owners of dogs, cats, and many other pets. Well when the explosion killed the owners, many of the pets would be waiting outside on the front porch of the owners house for their owner to come (if the house still had a porch) and their owner never came and many of the pets died of starvation. When the anchor of the Grandcamp was found the town of Texas City put it up in their park to remember this tragic day and the propellor of the High Flyer stands right next to it in the park. Their was one big funeral for many of the people that died that day. More than five thousand people attended the funeral. Hundreds of lawsuits were filed and many of them were won. The explosion damaged one hundred million dollars worth of buildings, parks, hospitals, and many other things. Congress granted Texas City seventeen million dollars to repair the town and start to rebuild. And another way that people helped out was by doing fundraisers for the city. One fundraiser made one million dollars. The song “The Day Texas City Turned Into a Fiery Hell” was made fifty years later and was based off of the explosion at Grandcamp. It was recorded by Sam
After reading a newspaper story pleading for support for the Arizona Memorial fund, Colonel talked with Elvis and they decided to offer a benefit concert to raise funds to finish the memorial which honored those who lost their lives during the devastating surprise attack on the military installations at Pearl Harbor. In March 1961 the concert took place and nearly $100,000 was raised.
Hundreds of people died that day. A good portion of the women who worked at the factory died from the fire, while the others decided to jump out of the building to their death. At the end of the day, the families who had suffered a loss due to the fire received at most $75 as compensation. The corporation learned nothing from the disaster. However, this was an eye opener for some of the journalists who wanted to make a change.
The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 was a terrible disaster that affected many people. It destroyed the entire city of Chicago and touched people in a way that would change them and the city forever. The start of the fire is unknown, but it could have been prevented if the building structure had been better at that time. But it is known that the fire could have been stopped had their not been so many careless mistakes and errors. As a result of the fire, Chicago was rebuilt and is once again a great city.
Eleven years ago Hurricane Katrina hit us, hard. The levees failed to do what they were made for. It was both a natural and man made disaster that was destined to happen and too late to stop. The damage has been done; the lives lost. But this storm, awful as it was, did more than destroy. The hurricane brought people closer as we cleaned up cleaned up after it’s mess. There were people donating, volunteering. It all just goes back to show our identity as Americans. It shows that even when we get knocked down, we always resurface, united as one, and if that isn’t our identity; I don’t know what is.
San Francisco and Chicago are cities that will always be remembered during their time of massacre. Many were lost but through the losses they gained new structures that protect the citizens today and the ones yet to come. Although the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 were both horrific events that created huge destruction on the United States, they took a big toll in people’s lives in many different ways and encouraged them to take charge and rebuild back their hometowns that they loved.
1906 San Francisco Earthquake Jared E. Gatchalian San Jose State University. 1906 San Francisco Earthquake The 1906 San Francisco earthquake was one of the largest earthquakes in the United States. Even though it only lasted less than a minute, the damage and aftermath of the earthquake were disastrous. These damages were not just from the earthquake, but also from other hazards that occurred because of it. It also had a huge effect on the people living in San Francisco.
There has been a significant surge in murder and violent crimes in San Antonio this year. “According to a recent study, the violent crime rate is projected to grow by 52.5 percent by December, the highest spike among 21 of the nation’s largest cities” (Eaton). So what is the reason for this massive increase in San Antonio crime? The San Antonio police chief, William McManus stated that “there is no one reason why violent crime and murder are rising so fast — both locally and nationwide” (Eaton). His answer coincides with my hypothesis and research outcomes as well. My research shows that San Antonio’s crime rate increase can be attributed to a myriad of social, economic, and governmental factors. These include, but are not limited to, population
The Texas Revolution is one of the biggest events that contributed to the founding of this country. Texas’s fight for independence from the Mexican government was very beneficial to the young and growing United States. The effects of this war play a crucial role in how this country came to be
Harvey resulted in over eighty fatalities and over 150 billion dollars in damages. Several factors were to blame for this immense destruction. Varying weather patterns throughout the storm, the city structure of Houston, Texas, and no mandatory evacuation caused this devastation. In my opinion, people need to respect the natural land structure and ocean life, such as coral reefs. These structures play an important role in preserving our environment during natural disasters. People also need to take warnings seriously, such as the instance in which the Texas governor addressed the citizens in Houston to

During the years of 1811-1812 three earthquakes occurred near the small town of New Madrid, Missouri. Based on the on the Richter scale the magnitudes of each or these earthquakes measured at a 7.0 or higher. These earthquakes were felt as far away as Boston, Hartford, and New Orleans. The damage caused by these earthquakes went as far as Cincinnati, Ohio and St.Louis Missouri. These earthquakes are known as the New Madrid Earthquakes.
Rising floods were left by Hurricane Harvey. It was the fiercest hurricane to hit the U.S. in more than 10 years. The huge storm hit southern Texas on Friday night. In the days after, it continued to rain down on cities across Texas.
In the 20th century, Texas suffered three of the worst disasters in its 181-year history. Although the 1900 Galveston hurricane, the Dust Bowl of the 30s, and the 1947 Texas City Explosion all had a tremendously detrimental effect on Texas, the Texas City Explosion of 1947 caused huge losses and is remembered as the worst industrial disaster in U.S. history. The 1947 Texas City Explosion had the greatest social, political, and economic impact that is still felt to this day.
Every year, many natural disasters happen around the world. In New Orleans, and several other states, a devastating hurricane struck. High-speed winds and major flooding caused many people to lose their homes and even their lives. Many people have heard of Hurricane Katrina, but not everybody knows what caused it and the affect it had on the United States. On the early morning of August 29th, 2005 on the Gulf Shore near New Orleans, a devastating hurricane struck.
Hurricane Harvey caused the United States to pay $180,000,000,000 for the damages. The storm took place from August 17, 2017 - September 3, 2017. I say that Hurricane Harvey DID show the reality in climate change because scientist have been taking test that show what climate change did to the planet. People have been talking more about storms that hit the United States because it happens so often but now people are just now noticing the reality of them.
