Service Learning and Social Responsibility
In week three, I have to admit, am highly overwhelmed, not to mention, tackling family life, personal challenges, and a high school educational role. Notably, I am in love with teaching the youth to strive for educational accomplishments, especially, in the role of human life. Not only, am I learning my role in a high school setting but learning the value of service learning. In addition, students wanted to promote a service to staff by reminding them on why they chose the professional of human life. For example, students make cards for nurses, MD’s, and support staff with encouraging words such as; life is to be valued, love conquers all, we are here to provide a service, we have a civic responsibility to provide care, compassion, and so on. As a matter of fact, I make it a point to share what UT Arlington teaches in order to promote a higher level of learning, so I briefly discussed the development of values, cultural diversity, and civic responsibility. Correspondingly, when students and I debriefed on shadowing experiences, I spoke about how as healthcare professionals, we are here to provide a service, learn from observation, moreover, our practicum has a civic duty to engage in social change. On day three, encouraged students to sit with patients in the activity center to engage in conversation in order to develop values that service offers. Day four, students and I assisted activities director and therapy department with minor patient interaction activities, even more so, two of my students signed up for volunteer services
We demonstrate this by: providing ideal care for each of our patients and their families; collating the ongoing duty to the care of the poor and those most in need with the provision of highly specific services to an immense community; maintaining a work environment where each person is valued, respected and has the freedom for personal and professional advancement; encouraging quality in health services education; protect a culture of discovery in all of our activities and supporting outstanding health sciences research; reinforcing our relationships with universities, colleges, other hospitals, agencies and our community; showing social liability through the honorable use of our resources. The functional area of service-learning is currently emerging as an acknowledged department at an institution of higher education. The theoretical roots of service learning go back to John Dewey, and the early twentieth century. However, current research on service-learning pedagogy dates back only to the early 1990’s. Best practices for the field are still being created as more and more new offices are springing up on campuses throughout the United States and institutions internationally. The reason this functional area is becoming ever popular is due to the positive impact it has on students and most all educational outcomes.
There were quite many relations made between my service learning experiences and themes addressed in the course. Some of the connections were about human self-respect, unity, and fairness. The social ties hold people together and can support the people who do not have the power to help each other. It was interesting for me to employ my skills and knowledge I learned in the classroom to serve those who need help.

Because of the numerous benefits, college students should enroll in the Service Learning courses or service learning based programs. These programs allows students to move away from the dualism versus unity point of view and focus on reciprocity and provides the skills necessary to approach future service experiences with a service learning perspective.
What connections do you make between your service-learning experiences and some of the themes addressed in class (justice, love, rights, responsibility, relationships, etc.)?
I volunteered at the Activity Center for my Service Learning project. My duties were to watch the kids who participated in the after school program, play with them and help them with their home homework. I really enjoyed interacting with the African-American people and culture. I learned many things from the African-American population I worked with. I learned how the Activity Center staff teaches the after school kids good manners and behavior. I mentioned in one of my service learning journals that the staff was very strict and treated the kids like prisoners, but I came to the realization that maybe that is how they teach the kids discipline. I had the opportunity to be around all the Activity Center kids and interact with them. They were kids just like any other kids. Of course they are kids and sometimes they did misbehave but overall they were really great kids. I noticed that most of the boys want to be more independent of them, but they were such sweet kids.
Service-learning is defined as a “course-based, credit-bearing educational experience in which students (a) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and (b) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility” (Bringle & Hatcher, 1995).
A service learning experience is designed to enhance a student 's growth in personal and social development and to obtain an understanding of community involvement. For my service learning experience, I volunteered at Change Point Center. In this reflection paper, I will discuss in depth information about the services that Change Point provides, my goals while I was there,and what I ultimately learned from this experience.
For my service learning, I chose to volunteer my services to the Tulsa Day Center—Homeless Shelter. Prior to this experience, I had my own perception of the homeless community. As many Americans do, I perceived them as lazy, unsanitary, illiterate individuals who wanted everything handed to them. However, I quickly realized this was not the case. Growing up, I would encounter many homeless people, whether riding the bus or walking down the street. I would also see them sitting outside of stores waiting for patrons to ask for money.
How did a departmental faculty generated 12,000 hours of student community service in one semester? The following is a qualitative analysis of conversations with faculty members in a department that recently instituted a service learning requirement for all student majors. The campus is a large urban comprehensive university with a multi-ethnic student body. Approximately fifteen faculty members were interviewed for this study. While most of those interviewed included service learning components in their courses, interviews with faculty members who resisted or refused to incorporate service learning were conducted as well in order to understand varying faculty attitudes towards service learning.

There are always some activities for the betterment of a community. If we get involved ourselves in those, we will certainly have some useful experiences in our life too. Service Learning is one of those activities, and it is primarily a service of a community with the application of the knowledge and guidance obtained in the college. Moreover, Service Learning is a way for a student to practice the education that he learns from the college, which in result strengthens the student academically. As a result, A student can be aware of the social issues through Service Learning, and he can apply his ideas and knowledge to come up with a solution. I have been working with the recreation director, who plans activities for the residents. I have painted the women's nails and read them letters from their children. Also, I have helped with special days like Ice Cream Day, Summer Picnic Day, and Clown Around Day. For each we create special word scrambles. I also have taken patients for walks. We also have birthday parties and exercise days.
The second week of my elective was more or less the same as the first week the only difference was the verity of the cases that ranged from as simple as bacteremia, meningitis, urinary tract infection to as complex as genetic and neurological disorders.
