Service Learning and Social Responsibility

In week three, I have to admit, am highly overwhelmed, not to mention, tackling family life, personal challenges, and a high school educational role. Notably, I am in love with teaching the youth to strive for educational accomplishments, especially, in the role of human life. Not only, am I learning my role in a high school setting but learning the value of service learning. In particular, the two learner objectives I learned this week are service learning and social responsibility. In addition, students wanted to promote a service to staff by reminding them on why they chose the professional of human life. For example, students make cards for nurses, MD’s, and support staff with encouraging words such as; life is to be valued, love conquers all, we are here to provide a service, we have a civic responsibility to provide care, compassion, and so on. As a matter of fact, I make it a point to share what UT Arlington teaches in order to promote a higher level of learning, so I briefly discussed the development of values, cultural diversity, and civic responsibility. Correspondingly, when students and I debriefed on shadowing experiences, I spoke about how as healthcare professionals, we are here to provide a service, learn from observation, moreover, our practicum has a civic duty to engage in social change. On day three, encouraged students to sit with patients in the activity center to engage in conversation in order to develop values that service offers. Day four, students and I assisted activities director and therapy department with minor patient interaction activities, even more so, two of my students signed up for volunteer services
