I decided to attend a local school board meeting for this group analysis paper. If I could describe the meeting in would word it would be “machine”. This is because the board knew everything that was going on and was able to move quickly and efficiently. I have seen other meetings take place and non ran as smoothly as this school board meeting. I am glad that these people are in charge of my education. The meeting was very confusing for me as a bystander because it seemed like everything was pre planned. Pre planning is really great for meeting because it let’s the people on the board know what's going on before hand so they can make their decision beforehand. It seemed like most board members had received emails with details of the upcoming meeting so they knew everything that was going to be talked about. This allowed most of the people to know what they want to vote for when it came time to pass something. Through 4-H I have become several of the positions on our officer team such as vice-president, treasurer, and other various positions. I know some of the responsibilities that the board members have to do. Someone, presumably the secretary or president was in charge of making the agenda and sending it out to the other board members. The president, just like in my 4-H club, is responsible for leading the meetings. Mr.Lyke was the president and he did a really good job of leading the meeting. He would always wait for people to speak their opinion on topics that called for a vote so everyone got all the information. It is important that the people on the board are aware of all the information and everyone’s opinion on the topics that they need to vote on. Local school boards must know and completely understand the basis of legal responsibilities and restrictions. These responsibilities and restriction include overseeing the operation of local public schools. The school board is held accountable for creation of policies, rules and regulations that provides guidance for the administration and operation of schools. The school board is perceived as a corporate body, which means an individual member of the board do not have more power than the overall power that is given to the board by the legislature. Therefore, individual school board members do not have the freedom to formulate policy, or act self-sufficiently of the school board as a whole. School board members are known to be public school officers, and are given powers by the legislature that help them fulfill their responsibilities.
The role of school boards “is to establish a vision for the community's schools that reflects a consensus of the board, community and district staff.” Although this is their main purpose, they also have to balance a district budget, create a district-yearly calendar, negotiate contract, construction, and approve district curriculum. (Stover 1) Although it might seem harsh to argue with school boards even though they do a lot, it is their job. They were appointed to lead and better the community, guide our children. If they are not mentally ready to be a leader, then why run for a school board member, the focus should be on the children, how to better education for them, and how to make sure they get the most out of every day coming to school.
It sets the wrong example for everyone and is not a characteristic of an exemplary leader. According to standard ten of the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (2015), a school leader should continuously seek the improvement of every aspect of schools. The superintendent should be addressing any misconceptions that are brought to the superintendents’ cabinets. The weekly meetings that were being held should be to discover methods and strategies to improve student success and develop professional and knowledgeable employees. Instead, this superintendent seems to protect others from being held accountable for what they say and do. According to standard two, school leaders should promote effective communication, set professional norms, promote integrity, fairness, transparency, trust, collaboration, perseverance, learning, continuous improvement, and professional behavior. This superintendent does not conduct himself as an example for others to follow and does not uphold professionalism while conducting meetings with the assistant superintendent; therefore, one must wonder what other business affairs have been conducted in an unprofessional manner and to what
By having school board meetings, it helps to see what the school’s needs. This is very important for the reason that this may be the only time that a concern parent or person voice might be heard. From this meeting, it was learned that the school board members are willing to help people that have concerns. An example, of this, was when the concern Pre-K parent was worried that she heard that Pre-K has been just a daycare. However, someone from the board mentioned to her that she would personally go with the parent the next day and show her how Pre-K is running during the day. This made the parent so happy because her concerns were being met. I have learned that school board members look out for the students and that they are the number one source that community members should go to if they have a concern or a suggestion to better their children’s
Are teachers enforcing discipline mechanisms in a healthy way for children? Researchers would answer no to this question because of one major factor: removing recess from a child’s school day. In Jessica Lahey’s article, “Students Who Lose Recess Are the Ones Who Need It Most”, she states that “schools continue to take away recess privileges as a penalty for academic or behavioral transgressions”. Many teachers follow this procedure because they assume that they are teaching the child how to act with appropriate behaviors. However, it is a proven fact that eliminating a student’s recess results in a negative outcome. Therefore, recess should not be removed from a child’s school day because this recreation plays a role in their physical health,
From these answers I would hope to glean each board member’s level of commitment to the district as a whole and/or to their specific community within the district. My first “meal meeting” would be with the board president in deference to his/her position. Thereafter I would try to set up meetings with each board member based on their years of service on the board.

I chose the October 27th board meeting. Right away I could tell that the members on the board were clearly articulate educators at various schools in Fayette County. I couldn’t unfortunately hear the names of the individual members on the board. There was 2 people who ended up addressing the board. One a reverend who had issue with the math scores that the district had which were novice. He was also unhappy that 40% of students in the district made a novice in reading. He didn’t like that 2/3rds of the African American students couldn’t read on grade level. He had a lot of support from the crowd as he got a lot of applause and he even had some people on the school board nodding in agreement.
Then a council member would talk about what they recommend the council would do which was mostly emergency legislation. Each topic has a letter from the alphabet assigned to it. For example D was on the Topic of the authorization to enter into an agreement for professional engineering services relative to the Dussel/Salisbury corridor signal program modifications project. A woman called every member of the council by their last name, this is the time either they can say rather the agreed with the topic at hand with a simple yes or no. I noticed how respectful the council was with each other. They all waited for the Mayor to address them with a Mr., a Mrs., or President. They responded with a thank you Mayor before they started talking about the topic. Even though they was respectful they also like to have fun there were a few moments were they laughed. The Mayor also addressed us and explain that they were moving so fast because the topics already went from committees then administer and finally the council votes. In the visuals above it is apparent that both are South African TV news broadcasts linking to theme of oppression and minority over majority. There are many similarities that are seen in these visuals. Both of these visuals have a portrait of two very different objects, the one on the left is of an oppressed alien. The one on the right is a man named P.W. Botha who was an oppressor, dictator and cruel president of South Africa during apartheid. So one visual shows the oppressed in District 9 and the other shows the oppressor during apartheid.
In changing the session times, legislators will be given a more equal opportunity and time to evaluate and better respond to issues. In the new change, legislators are now given more time than the regular 140-day sessions that used to be in place. When placed on the strict limitations of the regular sessions, there is much to get done which places a heavy workload on the legislators. During the nineteenth-century, being a legislator was considered a part time job, but with Texas population always steadily rising and modernization continuing to boom, a full-time commitment is needed to fulfill their duties correctly. We believe this was the moment our group began to transition into the Norming Stage. During this part of the assignment it was crucial for us to communicate effectively in order to ensure that everyone had an understanding of what was required from each perspective. Thus, once we began the research, everyone did a great job of keeping the group goal in mind by finding sources that could be used for every perspective. Additionally, each member kept their personal goals in mind and submitted the required research to our shared document at the agreed upon time. This was a perfect example of how we dealt with a group dialectic. Another dialectic arose when it came time to finalizing who would present each perspective. Some of the group members did not want certain perspectives because they did not have as much knowledge in that subject area as other members did. Furthermore, some group members did not want a certain perspective because their personal opinion might have had an effect on the assignment. In the end, we were able to balance the heterogeneous and homogeneous characteristics of our group members by asking questions, having trust and exhibiting strong communication

The meeting began when the school board members entered the large group instruction room and took their seats at a panel table angled to the side of the audience. The school board consists of nine elected members from the community. The members are as follows: Paul Ridley (President), Pat Vigliotta (Vice President), Helen Cumminskey (Secretary), Carla Manion ( Asst. Secretary), Timothy Bean (Treasurer), David Feely (Board Member), Keith Hatch (Board Member), Shane Oschman (Board Member), and Joseph Troutman (Board Member). Three members of the board were missing; however because of where the seats were located I could not see who was missing. Also, the member did not introduce themselves and left before people could address them.
