Approximately 5 million people in the world play and love rugby union including my family. Apart from myself, I have 5 siblings, my parents, grandparents, and 48 first cousins who all love playing and watching rugby union. My family and I love watching our local, regional and national teams. There is a rich history behind rugby. Credit must be paid to William Webb Ellis who invented the sport rugby which includes it very own rules and language, uniform and teams. Rugby started in 1823 invented by William Webb Ellis. There is actually a story behind why he invented Rugby and how he thought of it. William actually played soccer, but didn’t really know the rules. Nowadays, rugby uniforms are usually short pants and short sleeves in team colours with long socks and new and improved specialised boot with studs. Fans get in on the action by supporting their favourite team by wearing their team colours. Official supporter gear can be purchased by fans such as jerseys, socks, scarves, wristbands. In most games held at the stadiums you can clearly see what team the supporters are cheering for by the clothes they are wearing. Rugby teams start in the local communities and brings communities and the nation together. My family's local club is East Coast Bays with their green and black uniforms, along with my brother’s team at Rosmini. Our regional team is the Auckland Blues but we prefer the good old yellow and black - the Hurricanes of Wellington. Like most Kiwis we cheer for our national team - the mighty All Blacks. In conclusion, rugby union as a sport has grown since the William Webb Ellis days. With about 5 millions players in the world and a loyal fan base, rugby has its own language, rules, uniforms and teams.
