Residential childcare provides a wide range of services for people aged 12-18 years old. Many of the services that Residential Childcare provides are aimed at providing the highest standard of care for their service users, these services are derived for the individuals care plans. This includes meeting each individuals needs and taking into consideration the pace in which they develop and also their background. Residential childcare provides a service called “High Support” for young people where they have a sense of responsibility in dealing with their experiences to gain knowledge and understanding of their own behaviours and personalities. Other services that would be provided to young people would be coping strategies and life skills which would enable them to make appropriate life choices and communicate within society. After care placement, if the young people want to continue seeking help there are additional services such as Outreach programmes and Family Support. A service that is also used in Residential Childcare would be a Life Space Interview. This is where there is an attempt made to re-address low self-esteem in children and adults by attempting to build their ego back up. For example: Positive Care Ireland which provides a high quality therapeutic care service to young people in Ireland. Finally, key workers are huge service that is provided young people in Residential Childcare. Each individual will be assigned a Key Worker when they start in Residential Care. The Key Worker is solely responsible for building a relationship/ attachment with their newly arrived client in order for the client to feel safe in their own home. Organisations that would provide key workers would be Cope Foundation, Positive Care Ireland, Brothers of Charity and Bessborough.
In school we are always taught about the lighter parts of Canadian History, but only until recently have Canadian students been taught about the darker parts of our history. Residential Schools were included in these dark parts of Canada’s history. In the 19th century, the Canadian government believed that Residential Schools were responsible for educating and caring for the country’s aboriginal people. The goal of these schools was to teach the aboriginal children about Christianity and Canadian customs, in hopes of them passing these practices on towards their own children and it would eventually be adopted into the aboriginal culture. Many children are going to the foster care because of many tragedies they already had before they even understand what is life all about. Fortunately, for them, there are some people who try to help them out and give them a second shot at life. For babies and young children, the key person approach ensures that each child feels special and individual, and a sense of safety and a caring nature whilst they are in a different environment as appose to their homes. For the child, they will experience a close relationship with somebody other than their parents. (Elfer, 2012). The parent will experience benefits of the key person approach. Parents have the chance to build up a personal and positive relationship with one member of staff rather than all of the practitioners in the setting. They also get the chance to share positive and maybe negative experiences that might happen between the child and themselves, the practitioners get chance to share experiences also. (Elfer, 2012). The Key Person approach is very hard work, the practitioner has to be committed to the child, and their families for it to be a positive experience. The relationship between the practitioner and the child needs to be understood and supported by every settings individual policies and management, as the Key Person approach is very demanding of a practitioner. (Elfer, 2012). If a child does not have a very secure or positive attachment with their parents or carers, then one with their key person in the setting can sometimes compensate for the one they do not have at home. (O’Connor, 2013). Another benefit of a key worker is that they can support a child through the different transitions they go through, this may be moving house, moving up in the nursery, or simply being dropped off at nursery by their parents. (O’Connor, 2006) Children go through many transitions in their life, they go through many different transitions in just one day, and the key person can help to support the child if they have a secure and positive relationship with them. A substantial amount of research considers how children develop and form attachments from a few months old, as this period can have huge implications later in their life. Children’s experience of attachment will provide them with a schema about how attachments form so it’s critical they have a positive childhood and form close bonds, especially with a primary caregiver. This essay will attempt to assess the impact early daycare has on children’s ability to form attachments and to what extent it affects a child’s development.
To many outsiders, the foster care system may appear to be a safe haven for those children that are abused or abandoned by their birth family. This is correct, but the system with which it is based, has many flaws. A background check is mandatory for all foster parents, but a test to see if a child 's temperament matches that caregiver 's parenting style, is not. Now, this is seen as a minor issue, but there is not enough evidence to support this. Plus, there are many other, much worse reasons, why the system is not perfect. Altogether, the foster care system and a multitude of its rules are flawed and may actually be negatively affecting foster children.
To date in HN370: Child Welfare and Family, we have discussed family dynamics and culture. We have dug deeper into the social problem of poverty by defining it and discussing characteristics of poor children, why children live in poverty, the consequences of growing up in poverty and the correlation between homelessness and being poor. We have delved into substance abuse, paying special attention to both addicted parents and children. We have examined the affects of violence in the home, by peers and in schools, as well as the epidemic of bullying.
Growing up with a mentally ill, schizophrenic mother, I have experienced homelessness. Time to time spent under bypasses, abandoned buildings and eating food from trash bins. My mother often left me to fend for myself at a young age when emotions are beginning to bloom. Growing up like that I did not receive the correct education. The loss of hope feeling came when I moved into my first foster home thinking to myself these aren't my parents. Going to my very first school, not having proper vocabulary nor not really knowing how to speak without stuttering, first thing I did was run, run away from the school and ran away from foster family to only be walking the same streets my mom wondered at night, (not soliciting like her). By listening to what families, children and young people perceive their needs to be and working to adapt their services in order to cater or counteract some of the problems that arise when the wellbeing of the individual is being affected is what practitioners aim to achieve. Several agencies in UK worked together to improve children and young adults welfare such as Teachers, Social workers, Foster carers, Children safeguarding team, etc…Using Activity 2.9 ( Open University 2014 ) as an illustration, the narrator explained about Connors story, a young boy who has been place into foster caring. As a young child, Connor had probably experienced ambivalent, avoidant and disorganised patterns of attachments before his current placement which might have an impact on his behaviour. The foster family had concern that if Connor had to leave them, this could lead to further problems. Agencies working within Connors welfare such as Children social workers should adapt the fact of Connors relationship with the foster family does not impact on his wellbeing. Practitioners need to work in accordance of children and youth people diversity as well. Diversity can help to begin to overcome inequalities in society, which be might be a positive outcome or a negative outcome. Practitioners must firstly identify the assumptions they make about people so that they can make sure that they treat everyone with respect.
Introduction I have chosen to do my case-study at a childcare center in Framingham. This center is owned by Staples Headquarters and run by childcare company Bright Horizons. They currently have 196 children enrolled which includes the following programs of Infants, Toddlers, Preschool, Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten.
