Will raising the federal minimum wage help or hurt the American economy? Introduced in 1938, minimum wage has since then changed twenty two times. As the American economy recovers, most Americans would agree that raising the federal minimum wage too high at once would set the economy back.
The Democratic Party introduced new legislation this year, requesting minimum wages rise to $15 an hour, which is more than double the current. Even though this legislation most likely will not make it anywhere, due to a Republican majority, each party continues to have their own views on raising minimum wages. Studies have also shown that minimum wage raises in the past have affected “low skilled workers” due to making it harder finding work due to lower hiring rates. (Procon.org, 2016) Of note, from the online article, The balance, studies have shown that “increases in the minimum wage have a low impact on unemployment”, contradicting previous arguments of hurting employment. Government responsibilities play a crucial role in the future decision of adjusting minimum wages. Federal and state governments will take responsibility properly reviewing any new legislation; ensuring the best possible outcome for not only the economy but the citizen as well. Local governments will play a critical role with this decision with respects to ensuring minimum wage increases match economic spending indexes based on the local economy associated with each community that make up their populations. At current, 21 states along with some cities have taken it upon themselves to raise their minimum wages higher than that of the federal minimum.
